If she can still get in, go in and change the password, or else, AR it and ask for it to be canceled or taken back, LL admin can see the ISP, so hopefully they could see who has it or something.

If the person who stole the account was dumb enough to leave the email associated with it the same, your partner can say they forgot their password. The way LL fixes that is to have you simply set another one via email. Your partner will have to answer a security question about the account.

Otherwise, contact LL support asap; even if you are a basic account, you can file a 'special question' ticket saying that you can no longer access the account.

Good advice so far.

Let's get something straight here. It is extremely unlikely that "someone hacked into her account" from outside, and even less likely that someone did so from within Second Life.

By far the most common way of compromising your account is giving someone your password. Your trusted SL partner, or your RL sister or friend.

The second most common way is leaving "remember my password" checked on the login page. Anyone who walks by your computer has access.

The third is by letting your computer get infected with spyware, a keylogger program that monitors your typing and sends the data to some Bad Guy somewhere.

The fourth is playing SL on a laptop in a public place, on a public WiFi network. Your wireless signal can be intercepted and monitored.

All of these situations are preventable.

If they have a premium account alert the Lindens even if it's from an alt, or have their alt tell Lindens about the situation, so it can be looked into.

Using someone else's account is definitely against TOS.

Or scams like phishing sites, emails, etc. If they had her email and could cobble together a fake email from LL...there are lots of ways if they really wanted.

I don't get why anyone would, since accounts are free.

Do you think "password" is too simple. I really hate to change it. I'm just finally remembering it.

Uhhh yeah good point. Lol

Hopefully a person smart enough to make that much $ in RL or in SL would be smart enough to have a good password and not feed it into third party sites/emails. Lol

One kind of weird question ..

How is it you know the account was taken over?

Is it at all possible that it wasn't, but the account owner wants you to think it was?

I read this differently. The OP stated his partner's AVATAR has been taken over. Like his partner has accepted a scripted object that gave control to someone else........like thos slave collars or something. If that's the case do a "detach all" or look for some attachment that is unfamilar.

I don't think the account was hacked.........it may have been compromised due to ignorance of the account holder. And if that is what has happened Linden Lab should be contacted immediately.

We don't have any details to go on, only that the OP said the account was hacked into. Whether it was or not...

My password is secret.

Pep (You could change the 'e's for '3's if you wanted to make it more secure, I suppose.)

PS I've changed it now; it's different. With '3's :D

You've lost me. e's and 3's? Sometimes, you are a bit obtuse.

We need more information. What could have happened, for all we know, is that the OP's partner did something crazy. When he confronted her about it, she said, "Someone took over my avatar!"

Edited To Add: Colette already said this - I missed it.

I do that all the time. "A" becomes "4", "O" becomes "0", "E" becomes "3", "S" becomes "5". That way I can use easily remembered words for passwords, and also get in the required numerics when necessary.

Example: P455w0rd

Unless there was some strange activity, it's more likely to be a forgotten password.
