What's with the anti-tall discrimination?

OK, fine, if I find myself in a tiny area, I figure if I want to see the inside of a place, I'll need to camera. But what's with places like castles and large houses where even a '85' man can't get up the stairs? Especially the castles - I've reduced to 85 as a compromise, but in most medieval RP find myself the shorter in most encounters. How many male av purchasers of castles will want one where an 85 male gets stuck on stairs, never mind the spiral staircases? Who wants to buy as realistic as possible and have to use TPs?

I generally dump places that do this, figuring if the builder hasn't done basic QA, they don't need my business. Probably a panel somewhere in the house or castle with a missing texture or something as well...

And lets talk ships. There have been few ships and far between that let a 85 or taller male move about and I have found only one tall ship (the Black Sparrow) that IMO both lets tall avs use it and looks really good (and I happily paid half again as much for it as the runner up that simply wasn't fun to walk around). (BTW, as far as I can tell, the Black Sparrow was designed by a female av that was relatively short, so I give her extra points...)

Is 85 really that tall to all you designers out there?

Tiny avarats sometimes have problems with tall stair steps.
Most prim stars are just a waste of space and memory anyways.

In sl the avatars are scaled up by factor 1,2 and most buildings scaled up by factor 1,25 (1 real meter = 1,25 sl meter)

correct ceiling heights and room width to keep camera clipping and scale reasonable can be tricky.

You could always try life at the other end of the scale. Poor Elora, every time I take her dancing she has to wear a long gown, else everyone gets to see me twirl her around the room like a marionette. How embarassing! :o

I make all my builds based on rl height.. in rl I'm 6'2" and taller then most people in SL my av is also 6'2" so all my builds are based on that height inless I build a building then I make the rooms taller for easer caming. but not much :D

I've learned to make rooms at least 10m high for ease in caming. It's very annoying to have the camera pop into place - somewhere beyond the ceiling.

10m may be OK for a big open commercial store, but it's really too much for a small house. I'd say 5m is a comfortable minimum ceiling height, 6m is plenty for a residence.

i always use my old RP character to test doorways and walkways, with most sliders set to max it means anyone can get through.

one thing i'v learnt from this thread tho is that i have not tested for tiny access. i might have to pull out my tiny robot and start testing a few things when next in world.

I beg to differ. I'm extremely nice and could care less about how tall anyone is. Ask around. Besides, it's nice down here and I kind of like being held up like a marionette by that tall ghost.

Now if he'd only get his hand out of my, ummm....oh never mind :o

Maybe if people didn't feel the need to turn the height sliders up to "holy shit thats tall" on everything they can, there wouldn't be an issue. My guy is only 6'5" and the only reason he isn't shorter is because people feel the need to make themselves ungodly huge.

If you don't like the fact that you can't fit, crouch and walk up or turn your sliders down.

Yeah you will take another cup of false assumptions?

There are a few avatar scales that have been rectified to reflect proper scale of avatars, i can pass you one.

The problem come basically because the function used in avatar scale tools measure you from footplant to eye level.

in sl 1meter = 1 RL meter

so don't propagate that sort of statements.

I've noticed the height thing in SL too.

In RL I'm 6'3 which pretty much makes me the tallest person I see most of the time when I walk around (although it does feel strange when I meet someone taller!).

When I first arrived I set the sliders and used one of the height measurment things to get my height about right for RL.. then I went out into the big bad world.

I immediately realised I'd made a serious mistake.. to be honest most women were taller than me.

So I've set my sliders up so that I seem to be roughly average height.. I've not made myself huge.. well because I think it says something about those that do.. a bit like driving a big sports car and boasting about how much money you make in RL..small man's syndrome anyone? :)

People's height issues aside though, I'd have to say that any good architect doesn't design for him/herself but in order to make life as comfortable as possible for the majority expected to use the building.

In fact as far as I know, there are standard dimensions for these sort of things, otherwise buying a new door might be a bit more difficult and expensive than it is.

Well, if you read my post, you'll see that I did. At 85, whatever that is in meters or feet, it makes my avatar the smallest male in most RP places, mostly medieval. So I'm not particularly bothered by what a tiny or an elf place does (although some elf places tend tall), but castles, which have as part of their market the tall RP avs, that have stairs that can't be used by an 85 seems badly planned. A mansion with lots of open space has no real reason for 'shorting' any av, especially when the curling stairs have no particular proportion to brag about. And there is no excuse really when it is a basic incline with the problem being nothing other than the second-floor cut isn't large enough.

The two most successful of the top end castle makers clearly do NOT do that - they both put in real staircases and they can be negotiated by 100 male avs. Its really a problem with the pretenders - the ones that rely overly much on TPs in a medieval build.

It's not. The height slider is one of something like 5 sliders that affect your overall height. And then that doesn't account for any animation guided height adjustments (tinies, teenies). (^_^)

There are a few ways of checking height. There are good and bad scripts that tell you when you click an object. Most are based on eye level, so there is still a bit of error. My personal favorite method is using a phantom prim. I've gone as far as making a texture with both scales that I placed on a no-mod prim that you can simply walk into and eyeball. (^_^)

To that end, I think it's best to give it the unimportance it deserves. Some of us are tightly bonded to our own shapes. Particularly if we created or customized them ourselves. Same goes with our builds. I have preferred to work by eyeball while paying attention to the numbers only on the largest of objects or for the sake of size matching. (^_^)

Still... it's a fun way to poke at someone. Being amazingly tall or amazingly short is not an accident in SL. At it's lowest level, it's just one other means of getting attention for having both something in common with others and being different from the crowd. (^_^)y

It would be great if there was a height thing for the newbies to find their desired height from the start. And a feature where we 'old' ones could go and make us more realistic. Percentage height is hard to handle, percentage of what?

I'm 6'3" in the game, but would love to be shorter...then I just will be run over by the 7 footers...

Oh, sorry I didn't read the whole thread, I've got to run.

I prefer believable over realistic. (=_=)

I don't know how 'tall' I am in SL (and it keeps booting me off right now or I'd check), but I like being 'taller' because I can see myself and things just seem to fit right. I've ran into some male and female avatars that are shorter, and some that are taller. All my builds are based on a bit taller than my avatar's height, with plenty of space for camming around. It's terribly annoying going into a place and being slapped with a ton of walls.

Edit: Aha - In fact, this shape is 87 =) No idea how that translates into real height, though.

If that is true, then they messed up on the avatar, because a 5'6" avatar in SL is proportioned like a midget. A properly proportioned Human figure in SL ends up being well over 6' tall which is why people with an eye for proper proportions are accused of being too tall. So it's either one or the other.

Either the meter is off, or the avatar scale is off.

I disagree. You ain't seen my work yet. While none of my avatar work can be described as anorexic in any way, I personally have 3 completely successful shapes under 5'6" (including my main little me) and one right around 5'8". The only problem I have ever truly run into is the shoulder back spikes issue. As flawed as the mesh is, there really are a ton of possibilities and it really is a matter of fine-tuning over time. (^_^)

Even on my main 3'11" avatar, I'm shaped like a wide-set little toughie. But I'm in no means suffering from dwarfism-like distortions... Unless that elongated avatar bug shows its ugly face (or hip) again. (^_^)y

4.5meter ceilings are pretty much the minium to be able to comfortably use the followcam in it's default position.

This is why it's so hard to navigate in "starships" because they tend to have 3m ceilings.
