Could this be the end of 'my hair is up my ass' posts???

Nicholaz Beresford has just published a new client that he thinks will stop all those embarrassing instances.

Personally I am happy if this has bug been finally sorted but I'm sure some of you will miss the fun of suddenly noticing your hair is now where the sun does not shine :p

Incidentally he has also resolved a few other high vote JIRA issues in the same release.

:)

What seems totally amazing to me is that one guy on his own, in his spare time with presumably restricted resources, can sort out so many bugs and problems, where the whole of LL with an entire development team of progammers seem unable to!

From what people say, it sounds like the key is, he actually LISTENS to the other residents when they talk about problems with the viewer and suggest potential solutions.

That being said, I think I will finally take the plunge and try the Nicholaz viewer. I will miss finding my shoes up my ass when I teleport, but I think it's time for a change.

Nicholaz might be a whizz at fixing the SL client, but when it comes to creating even a basic Love Machine, he totally sucks!!

That's not right. You can send him nice emails any time. Okay, that doesn't involve using JIRA, but it's kinda the low tech version of the LL Love Machine :D

Sling's laying on the sarcasm. He's referring to the thread about LL's Chief of Technology leaving. In that thread, the subject of the "Love Machine" is raised. It's a sort of automated backpat system that LL employees use to congratulate each other. Sling means, "Bravo, Nic. You're keeping your eye on the real issues while LL goofs off and spends all their time telling each other how great they are."

Did I translate you right, Sling? :)

One could argue it's the ridiculous concept of a "Love Machine" that is the reason LL can't do what one guy in his spare time has accomplished.

Less patting each other on the back and rubber band fights and more time spent actually working on the client might be Nicholaz's real secret.

i#ve been using the nicholaz on all three platforms for a while now.

here's a sum-up:

- love the fact that you get the old friends list and IM window back
- generally, nicholaz feels a bit faster than the original
- less crashes
- even less crashes on the mac, where the original crashes so often that it's unusable, and the nicholaz runs straight for several hours in a row
- double-clicking a prim in your inv _wears_ it instead of showing the properties window, love that one

or in an oneliner: more stable, more usable, seems to be a bit faster

hehe as far as i know, "nicholaz" is a one-man show, so backpatting and rubberband warfare would be totally hilarious...

Hey ConductorX :)

Nicholaz Beresford is a bug hunter and sometimes referred to as "the Mad Patcher". He hunts bugs and sends patches through the Jira. His fixes get incorporated in the official LL viewers all the time and he's won LL's OS contributor of the year award. His most famous stuff has been closing a bunch of memory leaks.
In the meantime, he makes his own viewers, including his patches and those of other OS contributors, plus a few more little bits like the old-style communications window and friendslist.
Personally I prefer his viewers over the official ones, because for me they run better and I have very few problems if any at all.
If you want to find out more check his blog : nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com

Hope that helps clarify what we're on about :D

So enlighten us NEWBIES... What cha talkin' 'bout Willis??

Back in the day (like last month) it wasn't uncommon to teleport somewhere and find shoes, hair, jewelry, or other attachments randomly detached from their proper spots and somehow attached to the bum area (aka "stuffed up my ass.";) I haven't seen this in a LONG time, so maybe LL has fixed it to some extent.

There's a website called JIRA

https://jira.secondlife.com/secure/Dashboard.jspa

Where SL residents help to compile bug reports, new proposals or suggestions, and the like. LL programmers sit down once a week (in meetings called "Triage";) and look at these bugs/suggestions. One triage per section, i.e. they'll do a triage meeting solely on website issues. Anyone can participate in JIRA; just login with your SL avatar name and password.

LL released the Viewer (aka the Client) portion of Second Life to open source about six months ago. They are talking about releasing the Server portion to open source as well, but that's in the future. Any one can fix bugs or edit the Viewer, and submit new bug fixes to LL for inclusion in new official LL releases.

Nicholaz Beresford is a whiz-bang kick ass programmer who has gone a step further, and has released his own Viewer, with some totally separate bug fixes and some features from older versions of the Viewer that some people preferred. You can download his Viewer and use it just like you would the LL official release viewer.

The OP has said that Nicholaz is claiming to fix the attachments up the ass bug. We'll see. I personally continue to run the official LL release because I prefer the Communications window over Nicholaz's old individual windows for Friends, IM, etc.

That's the basic rundown of it. :)
