I just saw a reference to a book that might be of interest:

The Making of Second Life: Notes from the New World (Hardcover)
by Wagner James Au (Author)

The amazon page for this is at http://www.amazon.com/Making-Second-Life-Notes-World/dp/0061353205 .

Some folks may not be aware of the author's past role as embedded journalist Hamlet Linden.

I've not read the book so can't offer a review but it's bound to have some info some would find interesting.

Alas, in his telling, Second Life's ongoing fantasia—the monkey now perched on the wing screamed 'DIEEEE' as he strafed a well-armed babe in a bikini—feels very much like a recounted dream: creative, certainly, but rather tedious and patently irrelevant. (Mar.)

Ouch! :(

"Au, a journalist who chronicled the site as Linden Labs' reporter-avatar"

I refuse to take seriously anyone who refers to Second Life as a "site." Why do they let people write about SL who haven't ever logged in? Maybe I should get a job reviewing WoW even though I've never played.

Yeesh.

/me notices that that amazon page shows that Philip wrote a book, too. First time I've heard that either had a book out.

If you were a kid at Disneyworld, how would you feel if Mickey took off his head, revealing that he was not a human in a costume, but instead a real but freshly decapitated giant mouse?

That's exactly what I do with my plastic bear costume - I take off the head to prove it's just me inside. I then kick the head around like a football and, if really necessary, I take off the rest of the bear to reveal the rest of me!

You OBVIOUSLY have never seen my house...the books take up more space than anything else. :p

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I was sort of kidding there. My RL office (ok, my RL broom-closet with a view of the entrance to the parking lot and a beautiful water view as soon as the building rotates 90 degrees) is right next to the reference library. I do everything online, but occasionally I wander in there just to pick up a real book. I always spend a solid 10-15 minutes trying to remember how to do research in an actual book. There's nowhere to enter search terms!

While buying bargain books on Amazon is nice, nothing beats walking into Barnes and Noble, especially on a cold day. The sight and smell of all the books can be intoxicating.

Although my greatest fear is being caught somewhere with nothing to read when I walk into a book store or public library my mind seems to go blank and I have a hard time finding books I want to read.

And I picked up Wagner's book when I was there the other night. Nothing about it grabbed me so I set it back down.

Yes, I think Amazon gets as much of my money as my mortgage provider. Though, I'm sure that will change soon because I will need a bigger house to contain all of the books that I buy from Amazon and that will mean the mortgage goes up again. Of course that will then allow me to buy even more books because I will have more space and therefore Amazon's share of my income will increase again. Sheesh, what a cycle.

I am really glad that someone finally appreciates all of my hard efforts - it is just my own little way of helping out in whatever way I can.

Philip Rosedale's item on the Amazon page is a video of a seminar appearance he made.

One of the things other than my partner or family that will pull me away from SL is a good book. Alexin and I can't walk into a bookstore without walking out with a bag of books, cds or dvds and we go at least once a week. It seems like there is never enough time to read. And, I find I buy three books to every one book I actually have time to read, sort of like how I buy SL clothes and shoes! LOL

I think we've decided that the next home will include a library since we are running out of wall space for bookshelves!

I refuse to take Hamlet's work seriously when although he is no longer a Linden he is still their lapdog and their mouthpiece who essentially just toes their party line, he probably submits his stories for LL for approval before posting them.

Oh what I would give to be in Vegas now............I recently quit the Books on CD club I belonged to. I spend a lot of time in the car and can't stand the crap on the radio, so I would listen to books while sitting in traffic.. But I realized I wasn't buying books except as gifts, and shopping for books is as enjoyable as shopping for shoes.

Well, it's really not sporting. You can just walk right up and shoot them, and you don't even need a hunting license. It's like hunting cows only you don't get a freezer full of hamburger and steaks, so it's nothing like hunting cows.
