From: Leslie Trihey Whats the sim called? o.O October Country... as of yesterday, it had been completely cleared and put up for sale. I haven't been back today, so I have no idea if it's sold yet.

With some rallying of $ and <3 support might they come around? I've never been there but this strikes me as unfortunate.
Then again if this is the best thing for this person at this time...maybe it took a clincher like one rude person to convince them to do what they needed to anyway.

I can't see how it'd be possible... when I went there yesterday to have a look, all the objects and builds had been removed. The sim was just empty land, and had been set for sale. It is unfortunate-- it was an amazing place.

From: Lindal Kidd It happens all the time. Not just your favorite sim, Milla. Many wonderful places have gone away due to Drama and/or lack of support. The SS Galaxy. Privateer Space. My own little greek village at Lebettu. Ray Figtree's place. The club where I had my first job.
Hey, Liome didn't go away. Ray sold his place to me so that he could spend more time with his family. It wasn't SL drama; just pesky RL. It paid the tier when he had it as a tropical sim, and it's full now too under the big city theme.

People are selfish, greedy, nasty, self-centered, insensitive, egotistical, overbearing, obnoxious, rude, and mean.
Once you accept that, they're pretty much fun.

It is weird when a SIM is just gone one day. I have seen it but once as I am still pretty new. I don't remember what the place was called, it was some kind of tropical island.
I guess people tend to forget that for each sim on SL, someone is paying a RL bill for it. Maybe some people don't even know that the land owner is paying RL money to have the place. Or, people just assume that some big company like msn or google foots the bill and they think maybe the land owner is nothing more than a moderator.
I imagine if people stopped to realise that it is an everyday person footing the bill, they might not be so demanding.

UPDATE!
Those of us who loved OC just a little too much to let it go are creating a new (much smaller) version that will feature the same great old-time horror and suspense radio shows. We're still in the midst of getting everything together, but we should be fully up and running within the next few days. Join the "October Undead" group for updates.

Happens daily
02-17-2009 10:58
We've been keepin Luskwood goin over 5 years in Lusk/Perry/Clara/Tehama/etc (all mainland), and pretty much every day *SOMEONE* tries to impose their 'informed' opinion on us. We're obsolete, we should go away, we have 'no business' trying to keep going, etc etc etc. Either you realize that those idiots will be gone from SL long before you will, or eventually it gets to ya. I mean, we had people telling us in 2004 that we were doomed because we weren't a dance club, in 2005 tell us that we were doomed because we weren't a mall, in 2006 tell us that we were doomed because we weren't a casino, in 2007 tell us that we were doomed because we weren't an island, in 2008 tell us that we were doomed because we're PG... etc I don't know what the 2009 'meme' will be yet, but I'm pretty sure we're not 'it', someone will say we're doomed because of that, and that in 2010 we'll still be here and they won't be. What we *are* is the oldest thing continuously still running in SL, and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Appreciating Creativity....
02-17-2009 13:07
I was sorry to know that October Country closed. I sympathize with its creator. People seem not to know the work of creating a fantastic sim (nor do I, as I am not a builder). Perhaps some think that programmers come to SL and create the graphical wonders of our world. I am guilty of not showing my appreciation as much as I mean to in the future. I DO appreciate, sometimes with the eyes of a child..but I mean from now on to contact the creators of beauty and wonder and thank them. I mean to donate when I have enjoyed a wonderful sim.
I never got to see October Country and that is my loss now...
To those who demanded and complained, how dare you do such a thing? Learn something about your player-created world! This world was created for all of our appreciation and wonder!!!

just an idea...

I know this isn't popular, but the option to charge to get into your sim, could be useful here, even if its just $5L. A popular sim, that's working hard to maintain the atmosphere, should certainly deserve that. It could even cause those that do pay, to be more grateful for whats being provided, and cover some of the cost of the tier at least.

I'm afraid the "Freebie culture" is deeply rooted, I doubt it can be reversed. I was quite sad reading this thread....brought home some realities regarding SL. In RL you'd pay to attend most Clubs and Events, I don't think charging a token fee of say 5L or 10 L would be unfair, especially for those non-revenue generating venues (e.g October Country). What it needs a large inworld Group to be formed inviting top club owners, event organisers and non-revenue places to join it...and agreeing all to charge a token fee to their establishments. I think it could work if some of the most popular venues buy into it. I guess you could see it as some kind of "Cartel" for venue spots. If charging entrance fees became the "norm" over time....the culture would eventually change. Of course there will always be those outside the "Group" that would exploit this and use it as a kind of marketing tool i.e "Unlike XYZ Group members, we do not charge an entrance fee to our club....it's FREE! " My feeling is that anyone able to pay for Home Internet connection costs, should be able to drop a couple or few dollars into SL. SL is still a cheap form of entertainment when you break it all down.

It's sad that people can be jerks just because they want what they want and want it now, but on the other side of the coin, your friend should have just told them to shut up or naff off. No matter how harsh the words were - and I am saddened to hear that a few people who are probably in dire need of sex should turn on a 'friend' like that - i'd have just muted, banned and carried on. There's always one more imbecile than you counted on, but always more than one way to deal with it.

From: Clarissa Lowell Well, except a lot of people don't even have one Linden, who play SL. Yep, frighteningly many too There are money trees, proper camping spots, places running compeititions and other instruments to acquire a few Lindens. I have a friend who makes 500 -1000 L practically every night playing a few hours on Zyngo machines. She has developed a winning strategy that seems to work well on certain machines.

For petes sake, our economy isnt THAT bad yet. cinda, some people have no way to pay for linden, period. Two cents or not. It's about having the ability to use paypal or cc for it. Yes they can camp, but then places want not only an entrance fee but for guests to pay staff salaries as well, with generous tips. Guests are dinged as 'cheap' otherwise. But how long does it take to camp for that $100 tip multiplied by up to five staff members? Places can try entrance fees but then they should pay their staff salaries themselves if so, IMO. Also I hope some places will have 'noob nite' or that some places will remain free, for those who just do not have that two cents you mention. Of course, it's their land and their club they can do what they want - but there's a reason a lot of clubs remain next to empty most of the time. Constant dinging for tips may have something to do with it...personally I get tired of hearing it too...It does add up. In the end it's a virtual radio station...Sell some ads line the walls with them but stop dinging guests for tips cos you want to run a club without putting out any money for staff, club owners, is my view. Put out tip jars yes and put a sign above it and maybe mention it once an hour, but every 10 minutes or more, blegh. People could also sell memberships to private clubs for the elitists but I'd stay far away from such unless I already knew/liked everyone there...Cliques are not fun. Just reading the backlash against a certain such club online it seems those engender a lot of negativity to some, as well as fun for others. But as long as SL is as big as it is there will be something for everyone.

I think that people who are getting something for free have no right to make demands on what that should or shouldn't be when someone else is footing the bill, quite simply.
SL is supposed to be fun for most - unless you are trying to run a for-profit business (which is only a very few people). If it stops being fun, then you should stop, and nobody should have the right to tell you not to, or to try to prevent you.
That having been said, if someone is doing something well, praise them, support them in positive ways, because it might just disappear tomorrow. If there are financial issues and you care, get a group together to provide support for that resource that you love. If there are RL time issues, offer to help the person manage the place and take some of the load off their shoulders.
We don't HAVE to charge admission to things, in my opinion. Like the NPR (a radio network) model in the USA, a smallish proportion of the listeners contribute to pay the costs of running it, but a larger number just listen, and that's fine, because it works.
