The build it self created the geometry of the place, the terrain itself was moved around to accommodate that fact. So the terrain map itself may not be that much use.... As for LL doing some sort of rollback from backups, thats being looked into right now, I have heard various ideas about weather that will be a possibility or not. Personally I haven't a clue, but Im hoping that Torley Linden pops out of no where and says "Friendly Greetings!!!! Here is your build!" at which point a whole hemisphere will hear me bouncing and laugh for joy.
I would like to retract what I said about spiting in someones eye, it was and is counterproductive and rude. I am by nature not like that most of the time but the emotional impact this has had on Nick and Ariana and many other people has me flipping between crying, blind rage, and wanting something to smash or a huge place to build.
My Sweety is going to be stunned when she gets back online and the ruins of Osgiliath are towering over the house she built... /me grins!
If anyone knows of a sandbox where people are alowed to make huge things, I would love to know about it!
Cheers, Digitus Camel

Wow, what a loss.
Renting from anyone carries some risk, in both SL and RL. Last year, a girlfriend of mine moved away in RL because the owners of the house she was renting decided to give the place to their son. Rental and real estate in this area have gone up drastically since she'd first signed her contract, so she had to basically leave the region in order to find someplace she could afford. But at least the owners gave her a couple of weeks to move out.
It's a shame what happened to these folks, and I hope LL will at least open the sims back so they can get their stuff.

I'm very sorry to read this. But for something like this, you cannot rely on a middleman - you need to own the sims outright.

By all means contact Torley. Torley will know who the proper contacts are, and appreciates the importance of community on the grid. From: Digitus Camel If anyone knows of a sandbox where people are alowed to make huge things, I would love to know about it! Cheers, Digitus Camel I might be able to assist somewhat - have someone in your group PM me for details. Imagine this: your six regions regrouped, Rez Foo'd and set up in advance such that all can be redeployed in approximately 30 minutes or less. If you would like to have an inside look at Caledon's business model, I can help there too. If done right you will be back up, profitable and stronger than ever in say two months or so, with a bit of community backing. There are variants of Caledon's business model that may suit your situation well. Just let me know.

There's something else to consider-if the Tolkien Estate ever gets wind of sims like that they will swoop down and kill your with their lawyers. We're talking about people who CHARGE you if you publish a scholarly article on Tolkien's works and quote from them. Yep, they charge you for using QUOTES that you NEED to prove a point. (Happened to my fiance, who, like me, publishes scholarly papers dealing with Tolkien).

Ive seen this happen on small and large scales - just over the last few months.
It is the primary reason I do not invest anything other than time into Second Life.

We didn't want to get into a legal fight with HarperCollins, the publisher, about it, but you bet we were MIGHTILY pi$$ed off. So I'm extremely cautious when dealing with Tolkien-related stuff in SL. You never know. (But said fiance, Raynor, made a little one prim copy of Lord of the Rings that is free to copy and lying around on our plot.... )

Alyx is right. HarperCollins were fairly adamant, even as regards quotes from secondary sources published by them. It was pay or delete all the quotations. Or pull the book.

Well, it amounts to nothing more than publisher bullying. You seriously should have contacted the EFF, or retained your own Copyright attorney. If you were advised by a competent Copyright attorney to pull the excerpts, then there was probably good reason to. However, from the sound of it, you probably had nothing to fear.
JRR is probably spinning in his grave right now over what has become of his life's work. It is really pretty sad.

Erm, Xrtie dear....you logged in as your alt. Legally we'd have had a problem anyway as we are both in Germany and the book he wrote for was to be published in the UK.

Oh, dang, I did.
It may have been that the editor was bullied (or that Oxford University Press as the publisher caved in), but there was nothing we could do about this from Germany if the editor in the UK wasn't willing to do it.

Osigiliath has fallen! Methinks the new owner of those sims is named Sauron. What say you?

When rented sims are sold and the renters are left hanging in the air that is a shame but that is how SL works. Renters have no rights period. This is not first lfe.
Whether the sims were Tolkien roleplay or the worst sort of sexual perversion is beside the point. Sim owners have the right to do whatever they want with their sims according to official LL laws.
My free advice to anyone wishing to make a cool roleplay area is to either buy the mainland sims or islands. Renting will get you nothing but grief.

I can't even pronounce this place. And don't tell me how to - you might get a bill from some lawyers.

No its something french I think.... he had no clue what was there when I spoke to him and dident understand what I was asking..... If there is a Sauron in this situation I will have my revenge, but I do not think that is the case. It would be easier in a way if it were.
