A friend of mine sent me this link (signed up, haven't gotten a code yet).

Has anyone else out there seen or tried this?

you'll get more people following the link if you embed the url between tags. :)

Thanks for the tip. My question was more if anyone had seen it or tried it (in which case the link itself --whether live or not-- would be familiar to them)

Seems to be for windows only, so I can't even try it.

I tried this once and i couldn't get past the login screen. it gets to 20% and crashes. I tried setting the region settings like it says to do on the english forums but still no deal. So i gave up. IMO if it has that much trouble getting it to work i will stick with SL a bit longer...

Bummer, but thanks for the heads up. Kinda ironic that trouble getting something to work sends you back to something that barely works, but I totally get the "lesser of two evils" mentality hehe :)

Yea. i have no doubt that one day hipini will work for non chinies users without having to mess with any system settings. I couldn't figure them out obviously, since other people have got it to work such as sue here on the forums. Until they fix that, i doubt i will get to try it.

If I do end up getting the code, and get in, I'll let you know how I managed it. :)

HiPiHi is still in beta testing.........I think they are at the public testing stage now, but not sure. I'm waiting for the "final" version to come out because I tried to log in too........and figured that they really only want "geeks" for testing (making it so complicated for us "lessers" LOL).

Read their blogs and forums........you can learn a little about what they are striving for in the long run. By the way, I'm not sure how long before an English version will be made available, if ever. That could complicate things by quit a bit for me. We'll see........I'm going to try it when it opens for business. Supposedly this fall.

You have to get a beta code to begin with, then you need to install chinese simplified and chinese Unicode to get it to work.

It's pretty neat, and quite a learning curve if you don't read Chinese.

Do you know what a beta tester is supposed to do?

You can only enter Hipihi by invite as it is still in testing mode, hence you have to solve problems in order to help them make the game better.

I know. Me too. I really think that's one of the secret's to SL's sucess: Mac platform. There isn't a ton of stuff out there for us Mac users. And most of us older artists started on Macs (20+ years ago) and never really got un-stuck from them.

The SL world we live in is a watered down version of beta testing.

Though in a true beta the "world" can cease to exist in some cases ...or cease to function by means of simply not being able to see the world as it's meant to be seen, or not allowing you to travel places, search for things, see any game currency balances... oh wait.. hmmm lol

LOL

Yes SL still needs lots of testing as well and i 'm glad to be part of it.

I think you need to do a lot more work if you want to get in at this stage of Hipihi though.

Does anyone know what bonus's SL's early adopters received?

I remember reading something about lifetime memberships which sounds pretty cool if you ask me.

Why would one embed a URL inside of tags meant to display images?

Plus BBCode is turned off...still. So no BBCode even is working.

From the site
08-18-2007 11:55
"HiPiHi World is a 3D digital world as rich and complex as the real world, and is created, inhabited and owned by its residents. The residents are the Gods of this virtual world; it is a world of limitless possibilities for creativity and self-expression, within a complex social structure and a full functioning economy."

Sounds like SL, the buttons on the website even look similar. heh

They even mention SL. Hey I see a bill stirling house (really)....

**Shrugs* I`m going to apply to be a beta tester.

There's been a bit of englification done at the Hipihi company forums; I'm seeing the links now in english, making it much nicer - i.e., possible - to traverse the forums. The posts are still in Chinese for the most part, but not all, and it's not hard to get translation utilities to easily display a page written in Chinese in Google or Babblefish translated English. If you have a choice, use the Google translation, it's a good bit better than the Babblefish.

There's help on how to set the Regional and Language settings and shortcut properties on the Hipihi site, and at the IdeaShape forums at www.ideashape.con, which are run by SL avatar Jolly Heron. There's at least two groups inworld in SL on Hipihi, and you might get some help on the setup process by asking there. I did. I'm in the groups under my SuezanneC Blackflag account since I'm grouped up on this account. I believe there's some Hipihi setup info in my group forum here in forums.secondlife.com at /280/1.html.

There's also the Hipihi page on my Wordpress blog at http://suezannecbaskerville.wordpress.com/hipihi ; that has screenshots of the regional and language settings and maybe the shortcut property setting also.

And there's a Google group on Hipihi at http://groups.google.com/group/hipihi-group .

I had no problem with the setup process other than actually reading and following the instructions. It took me three days of struggle to finally set the advanced text services off in the Hipihi shortcut's compatability tab. To figure that out, I had to join one of the SL inwold Hipihi groups and ask there. Shortly thereafter, I realized that that precise instruction was actually in the procedures on the Hipihi english page. The difficulty I had with setup was actually just operator imperfection.

Hipihi is most definitely still in beta, still in development. It's not a beta of the full feature set yet - it's got important features still to add. I thinks it's quite neat to be involved at this stage. I missed this part of Second Life's development; I certainly don't want to miss out on seeing this new companion to Second Life and There and Active Worlds in it's early stages.

The folks at Linden Lab and Hipihi talk to each other. Ginsu Linden has spoken with them. Wagner James Au , formerly known here as Hamlet Linden, has visited the offices in Beijing recently; there's photo's on the Hipihi forums.

Hui Xu, CEO of Hiphi, appears to share a similar vision to Philip Rosedale's idea of creating a worldwide 3D web, a metaverse, if you will, and wants to work on cross platform compatabilty with other virtual world developers.

I believe the Hipipi company is planning to have something along the lines of a separate forum for non-Chinese speakers.

Saw that myself. Maybe they mentioned SL so it would show up on searches hehe..

Next thing you know they'll buy an island in SL, buy a classified and change the name from HiPiHi to:
" 0===HiPiHi"

*sighs*

Also, if you look at the main homepage for hihipi in chinese its exactly like SL`s layout.
