It just adds the name of the partner to the respective profiles. Other than that it has no effect.

All it does is gives someone the ability to become your next ex-partner.

Congrats on your upcoming nuptials. :D

Aww, they are just being cynical because the vast majority of SL Partnerings tend to break up fairly quickly. But some do last. I've been with my Partner a year and a half, and still going strong. *grins* Best of luck to the two of you.

Declaring a Partner is strictly a social matter. It publicly shows others who look at your profiles that the two of you are "connected" - though how the two of you define that connection is up to you. It may mean you two are monogamous and acting the same as a real-world Marriage, or it may mean they are the main interest in your love-life, though you may have many others... It is up to you. The only real impct that it has, however, is to add each other's names to your profiles, in the Partner field.

You can only declare one Partner at a time, by the way.

Hey my congrats were sincere - those were two separate thoughts I had.

Even if you never break up the main ability gained by partnering is the ability to become unpartnered.

Cracks me up that it costs more to get un-partnered :)

i have friends who have been partnered for over two years and their relationship is still very strong, if not stronger. not all SL partnerings end prematurely, just like not all do in RL of course

good luck to you both :D

Good luck to you!

BTW, whilst I wish you every luck and happiness and am not being a sour old bat expecting that you'll fail ... please bear in mind that the un-partnering email is rather ... brusque ... to receive ...

Ah but here's the thing. A partner's name on your profile means you won't get chatted up as much. A lot of people don't like feeling that they are off the market once the initial thrill of chase and capture is over with ...

Plus of course someone being partnered can often simply be too alluring and a challenge ...

But how many people read profiles? I've known people for almost a year that suddenly type, "OMG your deaf!?!?!" rofl

Do they do this before or after they make snotty cracks about you not using voice?

I used to never read profiles when I was new. It never occurred to me. Now I read them all the time. Some of them are fascinating.

To the OP. You already know that partnering gives your partner no special rights and privileges. If you actually want them to have some special access to your stuff or land, you can do that. How you do it depends a little on what rights you want them to have, though.

In general -

I would think if you have spent more than an hour talking to someone without reading their profile, you need a curiosity upgrade :p

I can handle people not reading my profile much more than those who read it and then ask, "Does the middle finger mean something in sign language?".

Hardly seems to slow down a lot of the people I encounter. I still get hit on a lot, by hopeful would-be lotharios. Which is particularly amusing when it is a guy making the advances, and the person in Ceera's Profile as her Partner is another female. You'd think that might give them a clue?

I've been partnered to Alexin Bismark since early 2004. We met in SL and now live together RL. Longterm relationships can result from SL partnering. I've a number of SL friends who did not take their relationship to RL, but have maintained happy SL partnerships for more than two years now. It doesn't happen for most, but it can and does happen to those that are honest and well matched.
