I agree, a colorful society will always be better than a "everybodies gray" world, but when religion is thrown in there, it makes me shiver. I certainly hope that religion can be stomped out of SL. Given the present state of the real world, and the fact that most things that are wrong with it are not a factor of lack of religion, but a factor of too many religious fanatics. I like that SL is relatively free from those kind of problems, and free mostly from racism, free from slavery, well except where its consensual. Free to be what you want, Government and religion both try to control that freedom

No, I don't necessarily want to see any sort of theocracy either. I was just illustrating that it does have some effect in governing some cultures, and not always negatively. Just like anything else in SL, if people wish to get together and practice some sort of spiritual belief, as long as they aren't trying to force it on others, fine by me.

Such a government would need to be:

1) Democratically elected,
2) Transparent in operation,
3) Accountable, and subject to the rule of law.

1. Democratically elected by me and my army of alts? Seriously, how many people would actually vote? An election could be dominated by a small group of people. Unless you are only going to allow Premiums to vote, or landowners, and renters, or Payment Info Used... etc.

2. Transparent? How does Congress meet, when a sim can only hold 40-100 people max? How many people read the forums or the blog, and how many would read the proceedings of this body?

3. Accountable... to LL. So what would be the point?

Hi there
My question Is: is there a residential government system for input on how second life is ran and the decisions that affect us or is Linden labs the sole governing body of Second life

Well, LL provides a basic set of Rules, and in Three years I've never accidentally, or inadvertantly ran afoul of them, so they can't be that unreasonable.

After that, the individual land owners Rule thier properties according to thier Role play, or thier personal Political, moral, and Ethical Standards. It's a lot Easier to run afoul of those, because in the end How stringently they are enforced is solely the discresion of the land owner. and again, in three years i've had few problems with these because if i Find the rules of any Given property to Objectionable, i simply leave.

Angel.

There are attempts at resident run government...

There are current resident-run government projects. They are small and tend to be limited to residents of a defined area (opt-in):

1) Confederation of Democratic Simulators (3 sims) [http://slcds.info and http:// neufreistadt.info]

2) Caledon (30+ sims)
3) Port Neualtenburg

There's an in-world group called "The Second Life Government" . It's open join and has 3 members. Every tree starts as a seed.

Except maybe for some that start as cuttings, or from leaves, or runners.

3) Port Neualtenburg
Is that still there?

I just read something saying it was gone.

As soon as someone figures out how to ACTUALLY physically move in to Second Life then the Original Poster has a point.

Until then its just Avatars who are being "oppressed"

STAN: I want to have babies.
REG: You want to have babies?!
STAN: It's every man's right to have babies if he wants them.
REG: But... you can't have babies.
STAN: Don't you oppress me.
REG: I'm not oppressing you, Stan. You haven't got a womb! Where's the foetus going to gestate?! You going to keep it in a box?!
STAN: [crying]
JUDITH: Here! I-- I've got an idea. Suppose you agree that he can't actually have babies, not having a womb, which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans', but that he can have the right to have babies.
FRANCIS: Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother. Sister. Sorry.
REG: What's the point?
FRANCIS: What?
REG: What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies when he can't have babies?!
FRANCIS: It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression.
REG: Symbolic of his struggle against reality.

There are soooo many reasons why I don't see the need for government. Next thing, they'll be saying that we need trade unions in SL....

:)

Actually there is a move among one group (loosely used) to form a union of sorts for the purpose of raising their pay. I gained this knowledge in confidence, so I won't give any more clues as to who they might be.

Oh dear....

I mean the last thing with need are avies out on the streets, begging because they can't get a living wage... oh wait, we already have that.

Avies with children at home that are starving... er....

Avies without a home....

or, worst of all, avies with no income at all, forced to camp for a mere pittance!

/me wonders if there'd be any call for a soup kitchen....

The government should do something about all these problems.....
