De-linking purchase of the current type of OS sim entirely from other sim ownership, so someone seeking privacy for a single household an do so at an affordable rate. As with full private island sims, a purchaser of a stand-alone OS sim would not have to be a Premium Member. With the price hike it would help a lot of people could buy OS sims direct from LL as then we would not be paying the estate managers profit on top of the huge price hike. Everyone mentions the cost of $75 tier on the sims, but in reality most of us having homes on them are already paying over $100 to rent (I pay 29,500L/$112). _____________________

Meanwhile, I'm counting on this announcement to come late (even a day late) and be somewhat obfuscating while saying essentially the same thing we heard before. Y'know, like some other announcements I can point to.

Sort of pointless to speculate, but... I suspect they'll go through with the price increase for the current openspaces, possibly talking about at some point improving their performance. They'll add a new class of openspaces at the current price, but scaling them back so severely that they are no longer a viable option, effectively killing them off and ending up with the price increase they announced, while looking like they compromised. 750 prims, 10 avatars and yet-to-be-announced script restrictions for the current $75, and the current "1/4 sim-minus-overhead" for the new $125. I'd say that fulfills the prediction. |

I'm kind of impressed. They did something instead of sitting on their thumbs and shoveling nothing but manure as reasons.
People using Openspace sims as intended need to contact concierge to keep it an Openspace. They've added a new form of Openspace called Homesteads. (There's that pioneer theme!) Instead of a sudden HUGE increase in price on Jan 1st, they've set it to increase to 95 USD and then increase to 125 USD in July. Educators will still get their discounts? _____________________

Personally I think this is very likely. I think they will throw us a bone in response to the negative feedback and I think this will be it. Bloody hell I was right! That doesnt happen very often. _____________________

I am deeply in love with SL, and have been since the day I got off Orientation Island.
Nevertheless, I am going to be looking into the emerging options. I see that Central Grid is now under new ownership, and has been renamed Legend City Online. I'm impressed with the customer service I've seen so far. Do I have enough of the pioneer spirit to go live in a virtual world without designer clothes, skin, and hair? Without sexy AO poses? Without sex beds?? (well, they MIGHT have 'em, I haven't set up an account and gone and looked...) I don't know. But little Lindal is going to go and see. That's how much LL's managed to upset me. _____________________

Even though my two Open Space sims are currently only housing half their prim count, and running 20-45 scripts each, that is still far more than the new defininition. Therefore I would have to pay the price increase to keep them.
I can't justify that. Why shoudl I pay 66% for what I have when I was not abusing it in the first place. So I will have to scrap my islands which means the Lindens have just screwed me for the US$500 plus VAT that they cost me. Thank you very much. I am so glad I spent four years building up my business to the point where I coudl afford those sims so I could have a park area and water for other people to enjoy too. _____________________

This would have very wide appeal even at the new prices, but would simply kill current Estate dealers. It would be a bloodbath on Mainland, too--including any unauctioned remnants of Nautilus City. Not that such effects have ever interfered with the Lindens' apparent glee at random pricing announcements. The ones who will jump for a Homestead are those who highly value that personal privacy, and can afford that price point. A LOT of other people will abandon OpenSpaces and Homesteads in favor of Private Estate land or mainland, where they get more prims for their monthly fees. _____________________

Their sole advantage is the land area that they offer, and the potential for true privacy at leas than the cost of a whole sim. While somewhat covered under that, I just want to explicitly add the estate tools, primarily free terraforming, and the ease of building a coherent theme which is neither free-for-all, nor bulldozed tropical islands. One could hope that this would lead to more estate owners offering varied, themed areas. I think there is a market for this, which has just been drastically boosted. |
