My trusty Speak and spell has passed.....been disassembled and properly recycled

I did find Ispell

it is a spelling correction program, its free and open source,

I don't really mind simple spelling mistakes here, I know what is being said

I just wanted to offer this link for those who would like a spell checker for the forum or other online web forms.
it works great and works from the tool menu. at least in windows and UNIX/Linux.

the link?
http://ficus-www.cs.ucla.edu/geoff/ispell.html

its free, its open source

This is a answer to resident.

but if i need to Phrase it as a question.

Does anyone need a spell check program for the forums? or even want one?
it this worthy of a sticky?

There are some stickies that are past there prime....

OH - as a note it don't do no good with grammar

crap. i hate being judged by my forum and chat verbage, grammar, puncuation and spelling. cripes, this isn't RL and we aren't getting paid. loosen up and go with the flow. half of us are snockered by the time the workday has ended and we get in here, and i can't see why it's such a big deal.

I was wondering if it not only does spelling checks but also does grammatical checks as well i hate grammatical errors its very annoying sometimes it seems like their posts go on and on and it gives me a head ache it certainly says a lot about a person who cant use proper punctuation theres a thread recently that i dont want to mention that i purposely avoid because of how many errors were in the original post its really something many people need to get better at before they all look like fools;

My regular email program tries to fix things that I know are grammatically correct but not stylistically....um....."standard." I bow to no machine. Nor shall my friends. Carry on! If I get the meaning and it isn't mean I just move on. Unless I can poke fun at a fellow office product :D

Totally agree, but I was shot down in flames by a nasty individual on these forums for expressing that once before. I have since noticed he's in conflict with a lot of peeps.

But yes I totally agree, if you understand the content and context of a post, a few typos or spelling errors are irrelevant. It's not a freaken board report.

If people want to use a spell check that's cool too.

Seriously, amen to that. I check and correct spelling and typos all day. If someone thinks i'm going to do it while posting in a forum, they'd be wrong. unless, as you said, it affected the context.

If you use FF3, spell checking is available at Tools / Options / Advanced / General tab, "Check my spelling as I type."

yea use firefox its

A) faster
B) doesn't let spy ware infest your computer just cause you typed in mirosoft.com
C) automatically blocks most pop ups (took ie almost 4 years to figure this out)
D) has a search bar that you can set to pretty much anything (including the wiki)
E) has inline spell check
F) doesn't make you install yet another memory leak next to your clock!

and oh yea, if i just type secondlife in the url box it doesnt take me to the most useless search function ever (live?) it just finds the page and moves on

Spell checking works for me in this forum using Firefox 2, Firefox 3, and Firefox based Flock. It's a Windows XP system. There's a red underline under XP as I'm entering this text right now.

Maybe you have an add-on that conflicts or an old version of Firefox.

Also, for IE7, the IE7Pro add-on does spell checking, and is working in this forum as I type. They don't have IE7Pro in the dictionary. It doesn't seem quite as good as FF's built-in. The red lines can go away while the word is still spelled wrong.

Perhaps it's time to switch to the current version of Firefox.

Assuming you have the memory to spare. I stopped using firefox when I looked at task manager the other day and saw that firefox had bloated to a massive 400mb of memory! That's as much as Secondlife itself was using.

No offense to the OP, but if someone really cared about spelling, they'd have one of the several spell check software applications out there. While I can appreciate and admittedly am positively affected by someone who can convey their thoughts in complete phrases with proper punctuation, capitalization, spelling and grammar, I have to agree with a few others here... this is largely a social forum and a great many won't be arsed to correct their typos after a long day of work. People are here to unwind and why should they, good and intelligent people, be made to feel unwelcome?

However, having said that, I think it's rather obvious to discern between someone who is ESL, tired, lazy or a complete and genuine illiterate idiot (although this may take several posts by said person to determine). And really... what does it matter?

If the illiterate and idiotic wish to post, how are their needs any less important than a highly literate individual capable of composing in utter compliance with the latest grammar rules (including that nasty new one where possessive plurals are now to be written as s's).

If'n someone wants ta spell good, theyll use a proggie ta help 'em if they needs it.

And finally, a number of people use their SL character voices here in the forum too (self included sometimes), which is not necessarily a reflection of what one is capable of when expressing oneself in a textual medium. I like the "weeeeeeeeee" and "okie" and "thankie" verbiage of my SL personae character. If someone disregards the rest of my chatter and focuses only on the playful expressions I oft times uses, then I really don't think their opinion will carry that much weight with me either.

Signed,
a kitty who kin reed
