Hi all, I know this looks a bit cheeky as it's my first post here but I'd be hugely grateful if you would take 2 minutes to fill out my survey about Second Life. It is completely anonymous and I don't want any personal information about you, just about your experience within Second Life. I am writing a dissertation about the perception of reality in virtual worlds, and as Second Life is a brilliant example of humans interacting with others by way of technology, I thought who better to ask than its users! You really would be helping me out a great deal by doing this, and as a reward you get the wonderful feeling of being a kind, selfless person who has made someone else very happy. I can't say fairer than that can I? It's only 10 questions and you can find the survey here http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=0eb3fpREut5KgdmQSiVRiQ_3d_3d Thanks very much

Hmmm...you should do this in-world luv. You'll probably get more varied replies as well as a greater scope of personality if you just tour the grid....if you really want a thorough profile on this subject. *wink* Also....you can paste your link into chat lines by using the edit feature at the top of your screen... If this legit....do it in-world....while I am one of those peole who'll tell ya anything ya wanna know (cause it fascinates me too) I am much more apt to chat with a person inside SL about it. Look me up if ya like.

Thanks for taking the time to respond I had thought about doing it in-world, i just thought it might seem a bit invasive to go up to someone who is probably busy doing something else. I'll give it a go and see what happens, you're right that I am more likely to get better answers that way. Are there a lot of non-legit questionnaires on here then? From doing a search I see there is quite a sceptical reaction to them, especially ones that offer monetary incentives! Thanks again.

From: Itzall Criss I am writing a dissertation about the perception of reality in virtual worlds $L might seem like a perception of real money in a virtual world, but the last guy who was doing very 'important' research offered some as an incentive. From: someone You really would be helping me out a great deal by doing this, and as a reward you get the wonderful feeling of being a kind, selfless person who has made someone else very happy. I can't say fairer than that can I? I think I've always known I wasn't very kind or selfless. Good Luck to you, though.

I was happy to do your survey. It didn't seem to pose any risk to me and unlike the other such surveys that have been posted here lately all of your questions had my accurate answers in the choices. If you could give us a link to where we could read the results of your research I'd be interested to see it.

Thanks a lot I'm glad you found it easy to complete as I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I will be more than happy to post up a link to the finished dissertation once it is complete. I find this topic really interesting, especially as one day I think we will be able to enter worlds like Second Life and be fully immersed within them in a virtual...'First Life'! Trying to get my head around all the philosophical questions relating to reality and its perception has been hard work though! Once again thanks for taking the survery

Yes, I found it a well thought out survey, and I was happy to do it. Yup, the previous guy who did a survey offered to enter everyone's name into a prize draw with a prize of L$5,000 - of course, to do that, people have to give their av names in the survey!
Personally, I think that would skew the survey. People who devote a lot of time and effort to SL probably spend quite a bit of money on it, and 5,000 wouldn't sway them one or the other - if they're going to do the survey, they'll do it anyway. It would sway people who haven't given credit card info and only have a handful of Lindens, and it may encourage multiple entries in your survey from the same person with lots of different alts.

You're right, Damien. I never thought about it that way (results being skewed by those who answer more than once). I guess I'm just a little weary (and wary) of all this 'research' going on. I'm also a little disillusioned that research can be done based on random anonymous applicants. I'm fairly certain that most who do this are honest in their search for information, I just don't see the results as ever being used seriously. By all means, if you enjoy answering questions 'just for fun', do so. Isn't it exactly what we do here...

I guess it's testament to Second Life's popularity that it has been targeted by so many people doing research. I too am weary of questionnaires, my university email inbox gets flooded with them every day due to it being the time of year when everyone is researching for their dissertation!
I don't intend to use my results 'seriously' in so far as using them for marketing purposes or product design. My intent is purely to get a small sample within which I could possibly spot trend/s, therefore giving me something to refer to in my main body of research, the dissertation.

As with all such surveys, this one asks if your avatar is like you. This question is too rooted in the constraints of the real world and just doesn't make sense in the context of a virtual world.
Does my avatar resemble the real me? In which account do you mean? Most people have more than one. If you mean my primary account, which avatar? I have several shapes and personae even within the one account. But yes, most of the time it vaguely resembles the guy behind the keyboard and maybe that's the intent of the question.
We almost need a new grammar to speak of the possibilities especially with the technology that's just over the horizon.

I wish some of these dissertation findings would get published once in a while.
This would save every doctoral / masters candidate from thinking they were doing something original.
We must get 3 or 4 of these a month.

I am tired of these surveys..
PLEASE FILL OUT MY SURVEY ON SURVEYS, I AM WRITING A DISERTATION ON SURVEYS TAKEN IN SL.
We never see results and we never hear from the poster ever again.
Surveying the same 100 or so people repeatedly will get you the same results. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

"CX" On the other hand .. I would have to be in a Masters/Doctoral program where a survey by a few people in Second Life would count as valid research. LOL .. I don't think I could have even gotten a 300/400 level research paper out of it.

If you have a spare few minutes I am doing a survey on surveys of people who find surveys of people who have filled out too many surveys that they feel the need to make a survey about it. Do you think I should make a survey about it or should I wait until I get the survey results? Or should I survey my survey about whether it, as a survey, feels surveys are a plausible way of surveying surveys.

LOL, nice reply, perhaps offering people money or prizes for will just get a lot of people completing the survey as alts too with random answers rather than a real respomnse by people interested in doing a survey. Surveys aren't going to stop happening, and we may never see the results because it is part of a univerestiy students assighnment or something, but who cares the questions can be more interesting than the answers, everyone has answers, finding the right question is the hard bit

I did the survey. I felt it asked the right questions.
As well as an objective statistical view, a subjective personal one is also of value. If you are new to Second Life, I recommend you throw yourself in and become fully immersed almost to the point of addiction. You will learn a lot that way!

"CX" Can we take a survey to see how many SL businesses redeem Survey Award points?

Yeah I had trouble with that too, Just thinking back trying to think which of the facility where I went to school wouldn't have thought I was loopy for doing such a pop-culture type subject for any sort of serious paper. Would have been like us doing presentations on MTV or something.
