I have a neighbour with a shouting tip jar. I would have liked to resolve this without involving the Lindens 'help'. But as there has been no response from the owners I've been left with little choice.
I've always heard that if you make any mistake in reporting or file it under the wrong heading Lindens will toss it and take no action. This has been going on for over a month now and reported numerous times. With LL its hard to know if any action was taken but one would assume by now it would have gone beyond a slap on the wrist. Yet the shouting continues.
I've been filing under Disturbing the Peace> Repetitive Spam. If this is the wrong classification can someone steer to me to the correct one. Or am I completely wrong in my belief that this type of object would even be against TOS. It is very disturbing and very annoying to me and greatly impacts my enjoyment of SL.
I cant hold a normal conversation with the constant interruption every 3 minutes by this silly and useless thing. I also get complaints from customers in our shop who think we are the ones doing it.

I'm finding the Abuse Report system very hit and miss, and it sounds very much like LL are not taking your complaint seriously even though it is most certainly disturbing the peace repetitive spam. In the next AR ask if someone from the G Team can come and see how annoying this is - some of them will actually do this (if there is anyone in the office when you submit the AR - this is the tricky part, knowing when its manned).

What you can do for your own sanity is mute the offending tip jar.

If customers complain to you about the noise it makes, ask them if they will also submit an AR - the more who complain about noise nuisances, the more likely they are to take the complaint seriously.

Hmmmm.... If I recall, Sears Roebuck catalogs were used for the same purpose. :)

Thanks to all who replied
@Marigold - I will take your advice and ask on Monday
It is out of reach if yyou were just at the landing point. You need to actually walk in about 10m to hear it.

@ Void and Kyrah - what is dev | null

@ all - Muting it might solve it for me, but doesnt solve the problem and noone should have to do that as a solution

Further, just a giggle Govenor Linden ( yeah I didny know he actually existed either) was there a week ago directly in front of the place for abt 10 minutes or so. I thought he'd come to investigate. Silly me. By the time I could close enough to speak to him he was either done or ran like a chicken s**t when he saw me coming!

Also the object itself is not mutable as I cannot locate it. It is purposely hidden, maybe buried in a wall or disguised as something else. There are a number of tip jars on the premises but none of them are named what the shouter is.

Governor Linden is just a land bot, so ignore him. He can't/won't do anything but take over land that has been abandoned.

As for the AR, all I can recommend is getting yourself and your friends to AR it, if it's that annoying. Sometimes it takes more than one AR for it to stick. Also, include in the AR that you DID contact the object's owner and received no response in X number of days, so they know you tried a peaceful resolution too.

I sent in an AR on a profile who shall remain nameless, but claims to be "lindenlab security".

Did they do anything? Nope.

I'm not sure if this is a recommended course of action -- other people might wish to offer advice -- but I have resolved similar situations a couple of times, after polite requests have failed, by writing a little script that forwards all the messages to the offending object's owner in instant messages -- thus causing them to appear on his screen as chat, like it is on yours -- along with details of where and when it said this and a comment that it's very annoying for people nearby.

Isn't there a script for finding things like this?

I wonder if they maybe terraformed and lost the thing?

dev/null is the linux equivalent of "throw it out" (it means null device, or more simply "ignore the output"..... |NUL is the essentially the same thing in a windows batch file)

Wow ! I cant believe that some of you actually came over and tracked it down and found it. Knowing where it is wont shut it up but I can now at least include its exact location in future reports. If only the Lindens could be that responsive. Ahhh but I'm dreaming now arent I? Remembers the old days when it was our world, our imagination.

@ Innula - What a clever devious evil way to get back at them. I will be contacting you in-world and would love to have you drop that script on m if you could. I'd love to give the B a little taste of her own medicine! I'll probably get reported for doing it and someone in the G Team will actually be working that day and I'll get punished but WTF I will have gotten a little satisfaction.

@ Ron - Yes, I suspected it was hidden in the walls or floor somewhere. I would expect nothing less from someone knowingly breaking TOS and trying to prevent anyone from accurately reporting it. I knew it had to be fairly good sized to display a picture but I wasnt about to spend the time zooming into all the walls there to find it.

@ Marigold - God bless you! Thanks so much for the lovely chat last night. Amazing how an evening can fly by when you're venting about the Lindens. I had a few nice giggles and relieved a little of the stress I've had over this.

Now you know where the thing is, dizzle, it might be an idea raising the matter direct with Blondin Linden, who is supposedly responsible for resident liaison on Zindra. It's his Zindra office hours tomorrow (Monday) at 11 am SL time at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Bronlen/129/211/36.

I know we complain about him, but he's a nice guy and, given something straightforward for which he doesn't need to gain approval from too many other apparatchiki, does sometimes get stuff done.

Hope this will help you.

https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/tnt/blog/2009/08/11/quicktip-click-an-objects-name-in-chat-history-to-get-its-info

Want to locate where an object that's speaking in text chat is?

Whether it's nearby or remote, do this:

1. Click the Communicate button in the lower-left of your Viewer window.
2. Click Local Chat tab.
3. Then, click the name of the object. (If you click an avatar's name, you'll get their profile.)
4. A window like this appears, allowing you to find the object, who it belongs to, and if the object is being spammy or griefy, you can mute it.

Well at least now I know the owner reads or has been informed of this post.
Today the contest board and tip jar have been locked down! Nothing riles me
more than someone going out of their way to perpetuate their nasty deeds.
Doing this makes it harder to properly report and you cant mute or get info on
a locked down object.
I am now asking all of you for your help. Please go to the coordinates :
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Yedboro/159/69/27

This landing point is on municipal land owned by the Lindens seperating our parcels.
You will find a board containing all information needed to file an Abuse Report and the entrance to the club opposite it. I greatly appreciate your support and help in getting this offending object removed.

If you're a nearby landowner a support request is usually more effective than an abuse report.

I've actually spoken with Governor Linden before (was a specific thing, and they contacted me), so it is sometimes driven by a human being. But, of course, they probably ignore most requests for conversation.

I went along this morning, and that thing is still making noise. What I can't understand is how it can be heard outside of its own parcel when the land it is on is set to "restrict gesture and object sounds to this parcel". At the risk of sounding very "noob" I thought when that box was ticked nothing could be heard in adjacent lands, but somehow this Tip Master object has got some override setting within it.

Anyway its duly been ARd, but dizzle, I don't hold my breath because it really does depend who is in the AR Team office and their own individual opinion (discretion ha bloomin ha) as to what action they'll take. And I would definitely take Argent's advice also and submit a support ticket - even if the object can be muted, its unreasonable to expect visitors and shoppers to the surrounding stores to have to go locating this well-hidden noisemaker. What a nasty malicious neighbor you have it seems.
