or just use the search tool on this website and choose search all of second life
(worked for me) UUID is at the bottom of the page or just look at the address in the address bar of your browser _____________________

there are many different ways, including third-party sites and some bots (I imagine there are more than one, but I've only heard of one in specific, and I forgot the last name)

And, just in case somebody's wondering, the search URL is http://search.secondlife.com/search.php.

Gotta be honest, I still go to http://w-hat.com/name2key by default. Of course, it works on accounts not listed in search and it works on people that aren't me so it's a little more thorough than most other solutions.

I tend to think of my avatar UIDD as being something akin to my national insurance or credit card number. So I'm surprised to learn others can find it easily enough.
Has anyone heard of an avatar's UIDD being used to nefarious ends? Like mimicking another avatar's identity in a script for instance? |

Has anyone heard of an avatar's UIDD being used to nefarious ends? Like mimicking another avatar's identity in a script for instance? If one wants to abuse something, they can and will. But they can do this easier and with more impact with your name than with a UUID for the simple reason that nobody usually associates a number with your AV but a number of people may know your name._____________________

If someone could fake your UUID then it would be an absolute catastrophe. As far as I know there's no known way to do that. If there was, the whole of SL would come crashing to the ground. Regardless the UUID needs to be public so that the viewer and scripts and various other bits and pieces know how to send messages to you and keep track of our balance and permissions and inventory and whatever else. _____________________

If you never pass by the scanner your name never gets added to the list. It's sure not perfect. Is the search more complete though? I don't think so but I could be wrong. Is there a way to get every avatar's UUID out of search somehow? _____________________

I don't think so but I could be wrong. Is there a way to get every avatar's UUID out of search somehow? nope the search is not any better or less useful as I mentioned, if the person/account doesn't have an html page the search is useless (all it wants to do is launch SL when you click the link provided upon search completion) Other than having someone touch a scripted box to get the uuid, I don't think that there is any 100% way to get the uuid of all avatars _____________________

Has anyone heard of an avatar's UIDD being used to nefarious ends? Like mimicking another avatar's identity in a script for instance? Your UUID is absolutely no secret. Any script which does anything at all for you needs it. Sending inventory, paying you, animating you, you name it. It is completely harmless. It is true that *if* you could fake a different UUID, you could circumvent a lot of built-in security, but it's tracked on the server and manipulating it would likely require a security breach of the servers of a magnitude where impersonating a single avatar would be pretty insignificant, comparatively. It is certainly not something you can do from a script. There has been some security vulnerabilities/breaches related to the account (login/password) and to theoretically impersonating a *sim*, but there has, to my knowledge, never been a security exploit in any way related to the avatar UUID. -Though in fairness, *if* there was, it would likely be kept rather tightly under wrap. |
