I take a LOT of classes where I am building along with the instructor and/or according to their instruction but beyond that:

-Never watch others build

-When I build I do so privately in a Mysti skybox

I don't build or watch others build.

I don't usually watch people build, and I usually build alone though I'm not fanatical about it.

Your question reminded me, though, of a video I first saw when I joined in March of last year, of someone building a prim guitar for someone else who was going to perform live in SL. That was a joy to watch. I can't find it now, though, either through the front page or in the video section.

Primtionary and Building Blitzes both sound like fun. I'll have to keep an eye out for those.

I participate in the Oldbie Blitz Build every Sunday night. During the competition, I am always out on a platform building. But there is always an audience.
Where/when is this? I would love to watch, particularly if folks talk about how so-and-so did this or that.

In general, tho, I only watch people build when we're trying to build something together.

NCI Kuula, Sunday nights @ 8pm.... But.... Expect the sim to be full by 7:30 to 7:45. It's a popular event. Most of the builders get in the sim by 7pm and hang out. (^_^)y

A friend of mine has been nice enough to give me some building lessons, so at those times, I'm both watching and being watched. Other than that, never unless they are building something really, really interesting.

I usually start a new home build way up on a sky platform so I do not get disturbed. I don't mind a conversation, but not when I am in the middle of building because those talks can go on for an hour sometimes! Nobody comes up there but many times I notice the little green 'v' on the mini-map trying to find me to no avail.

When a new build is nearing completion and looks presentable, I will rez a copy of it on land with an "Under Contruction" prim floating at the front door. I sometimes notice regulars that stop by and look at progress and their feedback is always appreciated.

Once when I was outfitting a new build on the ground, I was finishing up a toilet, and somebody came barging in and also teleported one of their friends to the place and they proceeded to make potty-jokes! Well, I could have become angry but instead, I put them to work for testing sit postions on the toilet!

If I happen to be near someone building, I enjoy watching their technique and the apparent thought processes that they go through in their creation...rather fun to see when they do something different than I would, and how it all comes together (if it does).

People have told me that they enjoy watching me build...many times I've been watched without knowing it until they later spoke with me, and admitted to watchiing from a distance (which is always kind of a mix of flattery and unease...people stalking me???)

Most of the time, however, if someone is near and I'm building, I have to let them know I'm going to be rotten company, as I tend to get very involved with my building (can't count the times I've been building, and turned around to find someone standing behind me or similar)

I'm in SL for the crowd. One of my favorite things is having people around. I have Open Sim Server installed on my machine. If I wanted to merely build for building's sake, I'd be using that. But, it gets very boring very fast. I just gotta be around the crowd. (^_^)y

I spend so much time making poses and writing scripts (not exactly spectator friendly activities) that being around people while I build something is sort of a release for me. And the people at Blitz Build are some of the wittiest and most creative people I have found in SL. The banter going back and forth is worth the price of admission. :-)

I saw that just lately in Google's Lively 3D chat thing.

I wasn't thinking about building contests or lessons while writing the initial post.

Much is made of building in real time where people can see the process, but it doesn't seem that this actually occurs much except in contests or lessons.

During the beginning phases of the last build I started, I had an audience and was being heckled by a group of neighbors. They were at the ugly building next door yelling and IM'ing me tellling me how ugly my building was over and over again. this went on for about 2 days .. I am still waiting for the award for the ugliest building on SL and the prize that comes with it.

I have never watched anybody build because they always ban me when I get too close.. haha maybe Cherry will let me watch her next time she builds something.

i always build in private skyboxes, unless it's necessary ground work, so no one watches me.

i've been to a few sandboxes to watch and learn, but i find it very boring.

Good Question
07-16-2008 18:11
Recently it's been about 20% watch for me and it's usually at a "Show and Tell" or a class setting. A little bit in safe sandbox settings too.

When I first started building, I spent 0% watching. Too wrapped up in learning and experimenting.

After a long run of nothing but building the past few months, I had a strong urge to be around other constructive types. Since I'm curious and genuinely interested in the creative process, watching someone else create has been entertaining. Most of the time we only see the results, not the process.

The "Show and Tells" are interesting too. I recently went to my first "Show and Tell" at Builders Eden. There's a lot of great things being built and developed out there. The atmosphere was positive and open. It was refreshing to dwell briefly with people that wanted feedback, welcomed questions and wanted to share. It's a team-oriented, diplomatic atmosphere as opposed to competitive individualism. Supa cool.

I'm between builds at the moment. I'm giving my builders arm a break (SO gross to see the dislocated builders shoulder phenomenon. Thanks to the people that told me how to eliminate that btw ;) and open my eyes to what's around me. My next build is going to be a challenge. I'm procrastinating a bit, but enjoying myself.

Laters,

I build quite a bit, but I never construct anything lol. Most of my 'build time' is spent just messing with prims seeing what I can do...

Same mostly =) I just like to make stuff for its own sake. Most stuff I never finish =) Never put anything I've made for sale, or even given it to anyone. Not yet anyway. Not good enough at it really.

I prefer building by myself way up in the sky. Don't watch people doing it much. But I spend alot of time inspecting what other people have made. And if they've done something I've not seen before then I dash home and see if I can do it the same way. And when, if, I can, then I think kool and thats about it. I really enjoy just learning how to script and make stuff.

Me too, in the LL room. Where the guys hit on everything that moves when they aren't hitting each other.

I've never tried that one, but I once tried participating in something similar at one of the ArtDoor haunts.

What a humbling experience!

At the end of the first round, I was sitting there still contemplating which prim I wanted to start with, when all around me there were these completed works of art, on nicely finished platforms.

At the end of the final round I had like three prims, maybe one of which had a non-blank texture and another with a bumpmap. The other contestants each had, like, a perfectly to-scale steampunk Royal Albert Hall complete with precisely aligned textures, baked lighting, and an animated prim-Englishman making some obscurely witty comment on Victorian politics.

So, now I can't watch anybody build: it's too depressing; and I can't let anybody see me build: it's too embarrassing. :o

Most fellow builders will understand this and try to keep quiet, unless you're doing something they hadn't thought of or doing it in a different way. I don't mind those kind of visitors.

I only started putting up ban lines when I build because I got really tired of people getting between the camera and my project or worse.. on the project. I don't mind watchers, as long as they are considerate.

Admittedly, this is the only time I find Voice to be really handy. With Voice, I don't have to stop building to chat with someone.

Depends on the builder. If it's someone that impresses me then I love to watch them build, I learn new tricks that way. But, if it's someone who can't align a prim or texture and leaves gaps it hurts my brain, I cry a little then I walk away.

Also, alpha windows make me insane. Nothing like a wall with an alpha window near the water, flicker city *grumble ugly shack next door grumble*

i regularly sit and supervise bri building, pointing out things i dont like, telling her things to change, basically scrutinising the build in general.
