How important are door sounds?

Do you need door sounds with your doors? In an environment where so few things make any sounds, I find door sounds to be more annoying than useful, particularly since they tend to sound out of sync with the door, but what do you think?

Do you like your doors to make sounds opening and closing?

I don't find them out of sync, and I like having the door sound - it's just familiar. If it was out of sync, I would feel differently, probably.

I have sounds turned off, so I would never hear them.

I would like more variety in door sounds. Whether industrial warehouse doors or hobbit hole doors, they all sound exactly alike.

I guess they contribute to lag ever so slightly though, so I could live with silence.

I prefer sound, and do not have sync issue with e/m. But ya, not all doors should sound alike. Many jes stick with what's in the script. :-/

I like sounds in general in SL, but *only* if they are of high quality. The set of doors I made has them, and I was fortunate enough to be able to provide good solid sounds that aren't like everybody else's.

On a different note... there's a certain rushing water sound all over SL, commonly used for waterfalls and it's horrible sounding and generally WAY too loud, as if it was sourced from a very poor quality video at a very low bit rate and way too compressed so it sounds like more like a transistor radio blasting static at full volume than anything else. It's also badly looped so there's a very noticeable cyclic "whoosh... whoosh... whoosh..." thing going on. I wish I could forcibly rip it from strangers' builds. :(

I tend to keep sound turned off, unless I have a specific reason to hear stuff. But the doors and sliding prim curtains that I install in my builds do have a sound associated with them. In my own home, I comment out the code for those sounds.

Give the buyer a choice. If they like the sound, fine. If not, make it fairly easy to disable that sound effect.

I made my own doors so take a pride in their smooth and silent operation.

I can't get enough of doors sounds, if I find a new door sound I'll have it. I build a lot and I have objects like cases, boxes, chests etc that have 'doors' too, I prefer variety, but for the most part I do end up using the default open and close.

kshhhhhhht!

I've searched the net multiple times looking for a copyright-free sliding door sound ala Star Trek and I get irritated every time I look. I'd be happy to pay for one, but I can not find one.

So, I made one :)

Took hours to find the right knock sound, the right wood-on-wood sliding sound, a trip to Guitar Center for a mic cable because my cat chewed the old one, a little white noise, and a lot of playing in Audacity, but I now have that pneumatic kshhhhht! sound of the Star Trek doors.

So now I like sound in doors.

Now I feel like getting one of these so I can go looking for other sounds...

There's been a freebie Star Trek door sound in SL for ages, the 1 prim sliding door comes with it, set as a UUID, alternatively a Avatar called Lorin Tone sells a number of ST door sounds in world.

I wanted a sound that wasn't ripped from a copyrighted source. It was a lot of effort to create one from scratch, but probably less effort than finding one.

Aww, I shouldn't have ranted on here like that. If you can still hear the wildlife over the waterfall you're good. :D

Don't wish to derail the thread, but I must vent about a ubiquitous sound in sl which drives me mad. It is a sound in a bird noisemaker, and the bird is the American Oriole. The maker of the original noisemaker must be a millionaire, because you seem to hear it in every single sim in sl (except mine, where it has been unmercifully hunted down and exterminated). For those who don't know the one I mean, it's the one which sounds like a tune.

You wouldn't think a sound could actually spoil your sl experience, but this particular one does it for me.

You couldn't possibly be accusing of derailing a thread with a title such as this one.

Laughs. I have to admit to getting a bit tired of that one too. It seems louder than the rest.

As for waterfalls - I like the sound, but it's weird when people think you should put two or more sources of it near the same location. The sounds trigger almost in sync, but not quite, so you get this weird phaser effect like a spacey Brian May guitar solo. Very handy for a sci-fi sim perhaps.

This thread has given me an idea - there may be a market for sounds, or at least more variety in sounds. I have a lot of softsynths and so forth, but this quadruple-cursed Vista nanny won't let me record anything on my new computer and my old one's hard drive is shot (probably due to SL and not enough memory). Still worth a try.

I don't think I have ever noticed it.
Of course with everything being one giant lag and out of sync yes it would be annoying.

I usually have my sounds turned off... and We have lots of birds at carpe noctum.. I wonder if its one of those.. I think they came with the trees... I would like to find a sound of fluttering wings... like a bunch of bats..I have spooky woods and think that would be cool....

I'm sure you have it. Everybody has it. Incidentally, I did once hear a sound of what sounded like pigeon wings, but unfortunately this information won't be of any use to you at all, because I can't remember where I heard it. But at least I suppose you can take comfort from the fact that it does exist. :)

Door sounds *can* be useful. If a sim is so lagged that you don't see a door open when you click it, you'll know it *has* opened if you hear the sound. I've walked through many a (visually still-closed) door that way.

For whatever reason, most of the doors I've encountered in purchases matched the door (castle door, entry guard, whatever). And one of my favorite memories, not that it comes up much, was an old mansion, and after the creaky door finished closing, a Boris Karloff voice said, "Be careful, master." Totally unexpected and matched the place perfectly. Probably get old in your own place.

So I'm a pro-door sound person.

Great subject lol

I carefully match sounds to all my doors .. many have awesome ones - specially the newer ones.. now with a new script in - all my new doors have adjustable open and close times and the owner can put in their own sound clips and knocking sounds. It really adds a lot to the doors.

I spend more time sometimes trying to cook a sound to match a particular door than it takes to make the textures.
