How do you mute someone's clothes?

While a girl walking around in a 10 thousand prim sparklie dress may make here feel like a million bucks, the effect it has on my lag makes me want to (figuratively) rip it off her!
Is there a way to isolate the annoying diva and mute here clothes so I don't have to render all that garbage?
It's particularly frustrating when I show up to go to a class and fall behind because someone feels they need to show off their superior talents.
Any quick fix?
Thanks.

You can set a limit on how many particles the viewer displays.
Preferences / Graphics , Max Particle Count slider on the right
I think if you have Avatar Imposters turned on, muting the avatar will make you see a flat gray silhouette of the person. I don't know what it would do for their particles.
Edit: I just tried the muting an avatar with avatar imposters turned on and it didn't work.

Yes, I was hoping I could mute the person and not interfere with the surroundings, but that didn't work.
Not sure particle count is having the desired effect. I just cut it in two and went back. My framerate dropped to 1.3 fps which is obviously not usable.
I don't have the fastest internet speed, but it still is a 1.8MB line and that SHOULD be enough to play SL.
I'll keep experimenting.
edit: I'm starting to think it has more to do with SL's servers than anything else. Looking at the bandwidth meter, it never goes above 600 kbps and usually hovers around 250. Even with SL running, I'm able to do a speed test and download at 1500 kbps and upload at 800, so it appears that it is SL that's being stingy with the bandwidth and causing the problems.
Note: My software firewall isn't blocking anything and the hardware firewall is disabled.

You might try poking around the "Render" menu in the "advanced" menu ( CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+D)

Suzeanne how about if you build a wall between you and the offending person. Would SL object occlusion remove that person from the client rendering?
I'm not sure what you are saying about the mute not working for you. When I mute someone they turn into a gray silhouette and everything is muted including particles.

I believe they would like to actually interact with said person, but not have to see their clothing, and or attachments and pretty things. ??

The title of this thread made me lol, I've seen a few outfits I wanted to mute and probably have worn a few that others wanted to mute, not because of bling tho haha sorry I have nothing constructive to add to this thread

A dress with hundreds (if not thousands) of sparkly emiters, means there's hundreds, if not thousands of PRIMS in that dress as well. Turning off the sparklies is a start to reduce lag, but there's still all those prims that your client is rendering. Oh, and which the server has to handle as well, since I believe those are physical, apart from the flexies, but those require even more resources anyway.
So maybe we should JIRA for an option to prevent any and all attachments to even show up in the viewer when muting a person. If that leaves people naked because they only wear prim clothing, and no "normal" pieces of clothing, then that'd be completely their own fault. This still won't reduce the server side lag, but it's definitely a start.

If it's a particular class and a particular person that's causing the problem then I would suggest having a quiet word with whoever is taking the class (unless that person is the problem!) and telling them that you and perhaps others are falling behind because of lag caused by this person. They might then request that anyone attending the class should leave fancy attachments and high-prim outfits at home, for the sake of the whole class. If it's just a general thing, and you don't have to be too close to this person, the only thing I can suggest is pulling your draw distance down to 64m and seeing if you can keep them beyond that, so you don't have to render them at all. Oh, and with the bling you *could* always try typing /bling off or /1 bling off (most bling tends to use one or the other command) in chat. That will turn the bling off for you, and maybe make Miss Sparklie realise other people are getting a tad annoyed at her pretties

just turn off the particles when you are near the person in question. press "CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+=" particles cause the biggest client side lag, especially if youre running a lower end computer.

No. There is an expensive tool you can buy that will do something similar, but not for free. Great surname, btw. If you have "avatar impersonators" enabled in the 1.20 client, it'll turn 'em into a silhouette. And muting should be turning off their particles.
Oh lord. I just realized the lag hell if each sparkle has the poorly written bling script that listens in open chat . . .

EliteData for the win! This works every time. regarding an earlier post about muting and av impostors...works for me. But I don't know if it affects particles.

Okay, what if you dont want to be blinded by their bombardment of particles but you generally want to be able to view particles?
I had a similar problem at an event yesterday. There was this purring and an irritating noise every few minutes which sounded like a cat choking (ahkkk!). Turns out someone had some pet cat on their shoulder (man, who picks these sound bytes?). I couldnt mute the object but I didnt have any reason to mute her completely. But that's what I would have had to do to shut that thing up. I didnt want to...

From: Holocluck Henly Okay, what if you dont want to be blinded by their bombardment of particles but you generally want to be able to view particles? Muting someone will automatically mute any particles they're emitting (although they'll turn gray as well if you have avatar imposters turned on in 1.20). There is one "bug" you can use to your advantage: mute the person and then just unmute right away. It will stop any particle effects they have running for as long as they're in your draw distance. You'll see their particles again if they fly off/back, or tp away/back, or if they restart the scripts but in 99% of cases it's an effective way to mute particles per avie without having to keep the person muted forever.

I had to kick someone out of my sim once because they refused to take off a belt that had a bajillion blingy prims on it. As soon as they entered the sim, server performance went straight into the toilet. As soon as they were gone, everything was fine again.
