I think I spent two or three hours preparing for a fashion show recently, and maybe five minutes on the runway.

Please... Must every form of fun in SL be labeled as something bad?! It's a freaking contest for fun, get over it. If you don't like it, don't participate.

Maybe not a joke made in good taste, but I doubt it was purposefully hateful. There are quite a few gay and lesbian posters in these forums and I doubt sincerely that any degree of hatred towards someone based on their sexual orientation would be tolerated by the majority of us. i wouldn't tolerate it at all.

You're right. I'm not trying to disrespect you at all, nor am I trying to marginalize your opinion. I was just giving a frame of reference for the comment. As you know, the person who started that thread used that exact same phrase - and the reaction to that person's comments consisted of ridicule, derision and flames. I think if someone comes in here and says something degrading based on sexual orientation, you can expect that most of the time, if the majority of us catch the comment, the response will be overwhelmingly negative. I know mine will be.

Okay, after making all the connections and finally following all the links, I sort of get the inside joke. But gay people are still the laughable pathetic sexual predators who can only score by deception, even in the lampooning of the behavior nobody else saw.

Well, if you want to run a successful exploitation business in Second Life, you have a large pool of residents who don't understand the Second Life economy, and poorly estimate the value of their time and effort. They are ripe for exploitation.

Keep in mind, though, that just as there are plenty of residents available for exploitation, there are quite a few entrepeneurs willing to exploit them. So it's not a matter of, "Build the sweatshop, and they will come," because there are too many competing sweatshops.

Particularly in the sexual exploitation markets, one strategy is to offer some sort of promise of status to workers in lieu of money. A common offer of status in lieu of money would be membership in an exclusive group (e.g., Suicide Girls). Some sort of fame (e.g., AVN Female Performer of the Year) could be another source of status, but it's not easy to work up fame within Second Life.

I actually make these types of picture voting systems. Yes they are insanely popular. In fact mine is the only marketed one called Picture Voting Contest.

Yes I make a great income from them, though not anyway near the amount my customers do in running them. However I do not have to run them either and it is a lot of hard work to deal with all the complaints, help queries and accusations of cheating from voters and contestants. The people running the contests earn their money, night and day believe me.

There are a few simillar type systems out there also. Mine comes in several flavours, ranging from free to vote, pay to vote and daily, weekly, anytime voting and is highly customisable to fit in with club decor etc. In fact many of my systems are mistaken as being made by the group or club running them. To my knowledge mine is the only one that offers data backup/restore of the contest data also.

I would be interested to know if it was my system that was spotted. If you click on a picture (on the pay the vote version) and get a LM to The Black Orchid Market in Tamsi, then it is one of mine.

Hard to know where the exploitation comes into it really.
It is all good clean fun and you can customize them to be any type of contest that requires voting to win and all the pictures can be changed very easily.

I was shocked when I found out how popular they are and how much cheating will occur if you let it. I beleive mine to be the only system to have successfully made cheating an unviable option due to the way the results are measured.
Believe me though, people will pay and do anything to be the best and win. I do mean anything!

Many clubs that use them tell me it is one of the few ways of ensuring a profitable club. Tipping and escorts just do not provide anymore. That's life, and this is far more wholesome than stripping or escorting.
