Every few minutes in my home sim I was receiving a recipe from an object with a random number for a name. The number was different every time.
This is odd, because my property is quite large, and I was standing in the center of it, so I wouldn't think anything would be able to chat with me without shouting (and it wasn't shouting). I flew hundreds of meters up and still received the chat. Another avatar right next to me was not receiving it.
My property has no object entry, no scripts and autoreturn is set to 1 min. There are currently no objects not owned by me. I am not wearing anything I did not construct and script myself.
So, where is this chat coming from? What is the range of an object's chat? I thought it was 30m, so I shouldn't hear anything while I'm standing at least 48m from a neighbor, right? It was able to chat with me no matter my altitude. Without shouting.
I teleported to a distant sim and the messages stopped. Tried to teleport back and was logged out, and when I logged back in (back to home) the messages did not resume.
Any ideas? Perhaps someone figured out how to inject chat messages into others' viewers? The reason I suggest it as a possibility is that I seem to have been specifically targetted (remember, the nearby avatar was receiving nothing), and I stopped being a target after a relog.
Any tools available to trace the sucker if it happens again?

The object was probably IMing you. IM's from objects appear in your open chat / chat history. I'm guessing that you came into the scan range of the offending object at some point, and it has then used your unique key to IM you directly.

SLProxy and the Dale Glass viewer are the object identifiers. Is it llInstantMessage chat? That reaches anywhere. See /327/cf/236348/1.htmlSLProxy post: /327/cf/236348/1.html#post1845147

From: SuezanneC Baskerville SLProxy and the Dale Glass viewer are the object identifiers. Actually, on my to-do list is to log system messages in my own client. I guess I'll just log 'em all. Thanks.
