When you finally can... will you look like your SL self?

I pretty much already do look very much like my AV does.. After all, I made her to look like me in the first place. I'd probably go for some fine tuning lol, but nothing drastic, and certainly none of this new breed/species stuff. You thought handicapped stalls took up a lot of restroom space, wait till they put in a sandbox for the RL nekos lol.
I just got over 3-4 days of flu~like symptoms... if I start growing anything it's your fault Des :p

Will the technology be available to ensure that I will continue to "match"?

Ummm...

<.<

Mot having had my coffee yet....that's pretty much my reaction too.... :p

While I do believe we are indeed coming to that age where anything will be possible.....it doesn't make me grow all week in the knees. If I could be anything at all....it would just be a more fine tuned version of myself. I didn't really draw too many short straws out of the gene pool so I'm not jonesing to be someone else. My avatar changes almost daily so I sure as hell don't want to be like her.....that would just be way too complicated. But no.....I would not immediately want to 'become' something or someone other then who I am. ;) Maybe strip a few of the tiny spider veins in my legs and perhaps tone my glutes a bit......find the cure for problem skin....I'd be happy with that. :D

I would become my av in a minute if something could be done about the following:

- breasts seemingly connected to the collarbone
- shapeless shoulders & armpits
- elbows & knees that bend like pipecleaners
- chunky weird wrists & ankles
- lack of genitalia
- useless fingers
- flipper feet

but other than that - hell yeah! I'm an elf so that means I get the reeeeeeeeeally long lifespan too right?

I wouldn't mind dating an altered person and my kids would be allowed to make their own decisions if I felt they were of an age to understand the repercussions.

About the only thing I maight want would be the ability to have perfect eyesight. My eyes are terrible, I'm not a viable candidate for laser surgery, and chances are if I live long enough I wll become essentially blind. So yeah, if they offered me a new set of peepers, I'd go for it.

Well, it's not so much that; for me, specifically, that's a rather complicated question. It's not an uncommon question asked in Dragonkin/Otherkin circles (though I don't personally identify myself within such groups).

A lot of people would not be hesitant to "look like" or "become" their avatars in reality. I have to admit my first impulse would be "HELL YES", but there are some nagging caveats attached to it on second, third, and even fiftieth glance. If I were to get wings, would I actually be able to fly? Would I actually be able to breath (fire/ice/whatever)? Would my life be extended commensurately? Would I actually be able to still integrate within society to some degree (this one not so important, unless I couldn't support myself; being relegated to "varmint" as a Dragon would not be very appealing)? Would I be alone? The subject matter alone would actually make for a very interesting fantasy novel, but I certainly don't think a "yes/no" answer without serious consideration of the realities of the technology will suffice.

I am also a highly spiritual person, and realize that my time in this world is but one pebble cast into a large pond. Another question would be if it would not be better to skip becoming "myself" here, and go and be "myself" where it is natural and meant to be. I have to admit, though the thought is appealing to do so here, it would be artificial, and would likely be largely bereft of some of the most important reasons I would want to take on such a form. Still, it is an intriguing thought experiment; one to which I am well accustomed. :)

One of the people in the Dragonkin/Otherkin community, who started one of the oldest Dragonkin websites around, actually wrote a story about this very subject. It's called "Birth of a Dragon", and it is at least a basic treatise on it. Out of respect for the author's wishes, I won't link to it directly, but it isn't hard to find, if someone is remotely interested.

Indeed, it's a much harder question when the form would be so different, and society not so different... society always seems to lag somewhat behind the possible. Perhaps it's fear of the "different."

I've ducked out of answering myself, but have been poked... so... okay.

For me, to appear as I do on the grid might simply be just one or two purchases from here:

http://www.gentlemansemporium.com/mens_victorian_outfits.php

And yes, I may very well do it, if I ever go to a meetup or something.

For my other typical avatar, that of a tiny but formal rabbit... that might be a bit trickier, as that rabbit is normal sized.

And were I to complete said transformation, I might be mistaken for a snack by any of the more predatory exospecies types...

If it were possible and as inexpensive as you suggest, I believe it would become commonplace if not common in short order.

I'd settle for looking like myself at age 21, only without the glasses. Only way I'd want to look like my avatar is if they gave us a new mesh.

Of course, I based Raudf on my 21 year old self.

Given Desmond's premises, you'd look like your avatar would if it were real.

As little as I trust people or medicine in general, I'm gonna let someone slice and dice my genetic structure like a drunken frat boy with a weed whacker? Not on yer life, fella.

:P

If Hollywood is testimony to what messing with mother nature can cause, no thank you. If people look odd when over-botoxed and collagened, imagine Frankengenes.

Agreed and well said.

I find Tarina looks frumpy and kinda .. blah next to some of the women avatars in SL.. I do not have the personality to pull off super beautiful rl so I like a bit of variation.

Dean Knootz wrote a series of books that are along this line... very interesting reading.

So... do you dare to indulge in any of these yourself?

Would I take my savvy and sexy alt's curvaceous body, pouty lips and perfect tush? Hell, yes. In a heartbeat. Most of all, I'd want her cool and dangerous AO though to keep me from fidgeting whenever I feel overwhelmed by RL. As in, almost always.

I doubt it would change much about me. She is the most perfect and amazing thing, and yet, she is still as socially inept as her typist.

From: Desmond Shang
Would you marry someone who had?

In a heartbeat, if I am in love with the someone.

I have never based love on the "wrapping", so to speak. Although an aesthetic wrapping does have its merits.

From: Desmond Shang
Would you allow your children to do it?

Since I never wanted to have children, no choice there. If I had them? I wouldn't mind. It IS the person inside that counts after all.

For some reason, this discussion brings up fond memories of Tanith Lee's "Don't bite the Sun" novel. Set in a world where everything Desmond described is possible with the snap of your fingers, where it is even expected of you if you're a youngster, the heroine discovers that all the possibilities in the world still don't leave you satisfied.

Titles please. I really enjoyed his books I've read about genetic manipulation of animals like the intelligent dog Einstein. (Of course I would, wouldn't I?) Would these be part of that loosely connected series?

Weston: have you read "The Haunted Earth"? One of the first books I remember in the "what if the supernatural had to deal with a modern technical society" genre. The main characters are a team of detectives, one of whom happens to be a dog. Well, a reformed hellhound, but still a dog.

Formal in appearance, maybe, but you DID keep peeking up under my skirt.

To answer your questions:

Yep, in a nanosecond. Especially if I get the good eyesight Brenda mentioned as part of the package. A longer lifespan would be great too.

And the heck with potential future progeny. I had to live with the parents I got by random chance, AND their genes. My kiddies will just have to do the same.

My avatar changes quite a lot, but the skin and shape remain the same. I do love the way she looks, but if I had the choice, I don't think I'd opt to look like her. Maybe the red hair, or lose a bit of weight, but I'm happy-ish the way I am, I don't need lots of genetic enhancements to be happy - however cool I'd look.
Marrying someone who'd had something done, fine, no problem.
As for allowing kids, I don't think I'd have much of a problem with it - once they became adults and old enough to choose for (and pay for it) themselves. Otherwise, tough luck, they can learn to live with what they have.

The idea of biohackers opens up a whole new job market for me now though :p
