Ok up till today my comp and SecondLife have been fine. But now my SL crashes cause I get this "my Atikmdag video card driver has stopped responding" and my SL screen goes black. I've not updated anything or upgraded....Is bad enough with all the SL crashes now I have a prob with it and my video card....
Anyone know what the prob is or what a fix is....I tried before this post to update driver to my card but I have the recent driver for my video card which is a

Can't speak to the VisionTek - I have NVidia - but I have been experiencing much the same problem. Googling it came up with a Windows Vista issue with how it deals with some rather abstruse video issues. Google as a single query your graphics card, the error message and your Windows version (I assume that you're not a Mac user) and see what comes back. Slightly OFT, but I suspect is a video driver problem: I am continually crashing when in edit mode. Anyone else had this? Inc

Many times you have to go to the chip manufacturer's site to get the latest referrence driver.. like ATI or Nvidia, not the card manufacturer's site. Other than that, the only time I've seen the driver has stopped working error is when there's been an IRQ resource conflict. Too many devices on the same interrupt number or something like putting an addon sound card right next to the video slot or in slot 3. A lot's changed since then though.

Video Driver Card Issues

I, too, have been crashing repeatedly...mostly on pulling up profiles or zooming my cam on an avi who is a bit in the distance, sometimes on editing, other times when in laggy situations such as when a sim is almost full.
It's getting very exasperating. I've checked my drivers, they are up to date and have not been updated/changed in a number of weeks. I've cleared cache, uninstalled SL completely and reinstalled. I've tried the RC viewer...all to no avail. Something seems very broken and I hope they fix it soon. It's really ruining the SL experience for me.

Me too; but truthfully I'm glad to know, now, that it's SL and not me. I can count on crashing twice within an hour after log in. I wait for it, it happens, with the same situations as others described here, camming, editing and a few times, nothing. Then, after those initial 2 crashes.....I can go for hours without crashing. I too hope they fix it. It sounds like there is nothing for us to fix, it's a SL thing.

Last night after multiple crashes I found I did need to update my nvideo card. So I did. Actually did several recommended updated. Finished, logged in and not a thing had changed, immediately crashed in the same manner as I've been doing, with the black screen and the 'Driver has stopped responding and has recovered' error message. Sigh. Only it didn't 'recover', I have to do the closeout process and relog. Only to have it happen again in few minutes time. Even with this I STILL don't think it's my video card, my computer is too new for that. What else could it be?

My system is only a year and a half old and I was getting continual 'driver has stopped responding' alerts for a few months before my NVIDIA 8600GT conked out. I'm not saying the same thing will happen to you, or to the OP, but be aware that it might.

This error is called a TDR error. Update your driver from the ATI website. Read the ATI forums. You may need to use a ATI removal tool to remove the old driver before reinstalling. You may have gotten pieces of an old driver from an update, so it's corrupted. If this does not help, contact your manufacturer for troubleshooting and maybe a replacement video card.

However, my card is nvidea, not ATI. does this advice still apply, as far as removal of the old version? The new version certainly hasn't helped. My manufacturer is HP. I don't think I can replace the card as it is a laptop, and is slightly over a year old. Thanks for any help......

I had something similar happen with my X1650 pro. I had to uninstall the older driver and after the reboot, install the new one. This was after I had attempted to do an update without uninstalling, so it may have been corrupted during the update process.

I know this is asking a lot, but this page won't load for me, at tomshardware.com. I tried removing the www to make it a link but still won't load. Is there something there I could ask you to copy/paste here, that is relevant? Thanks for whatever you can do. I have my 'Retired from IBM' systems administrator husband working on this, and funnelling all the help posts to him.....He's trying Rebecca's and Raudf's suggestion now of uninstalling the old one, and also getting the new update direct from the nvidia site rather than the HP update page. If there's something on that Tomshardware site, I'd love to see it if it's not too much to copy/paste. Thanks! (I DO know that's a lot to ask somebody to do after you were kind enough to even post the website but I am desperate, lol)

Its a software issue plain and simple. Ive got dozens of other programs that run fine but this rubbish crashes every time after anything between 10 seconds or 10 minutes. Ive tried new viewers, old viewers, new drivers, old drivers, and still this is the only software that fails to run, all this on a 3 month old brand new totally up to date pc. I guess if they cant be bothered to fix it lots of people will be trying to "play" in 10 seconds intervals.

What the hell is going on? Lat week I spent hours without any problem. This week has been awful. I have crashed like 12 times today plus I must wait a lot to see my avatar completely dressed, with hair and all. What is the grand boss doing about it? It is his problem not our computers'. These things discourages one to keep on playing. It happened to me last year in another game, and I gave up. Greetings Good night

Wonder how long I have before they poof I'd start saving up for a new one now, so you have the money ready when it *does* pouf. Not only did I have to fork over the money for a new card, I also needed a new power system for the computer, since the old one wasn't powerful enough to run the new card I'd bought. In the end, I was almost £200 poorer.

Sorry, Treasure. I thought you meant you were using an NVIDIA 8600GT. A standalone card like that one can be changed. I'm less sure about changing integrated graphics. They tend to dislike SL, as I found out when my 8600-powered desktop conked out and I had to use my old laptop to access SL for a day while the PC was in the repair shop.

I am using that software, Skell. Just upgraded few days ago, , to their latest version from the NVidia site. At first, seemed to help and I think maybe I am crashing with that Driver Stopped Responding error message a little less, but didn't stop it completely. And yeah with a laptop is way diferent than just replacing the card.

In Vista, turning off Aero can sometimes help with any 3D game. You can setup the shortcut you use to open a game to automatically turn off aero while running Sl. If you right-click the shortcut and click the compatibility tab you can select "Disable Desktop Coposition"

Useful tip, Steely. Thanks. I'll try that, since I always have Aero enabled.
