lol Stella, love it.

Just to remind people, I also need males and females who DON'T gender-bend to take part too, would really appreciate it!

No, the idea of the survey is that people with low self-esteem use female alts, and people with good self-esteem use male alts.
How about robot alts?

This topic is interesting - make your survey as open minded and open ended as possible, would be my 'feedback' since we were asked to provide same. :)

The only problem I have with guys playing female avs is that there are fewer guy avs to slow-dance with most of the time as a result. Heh :)

Joking. I asked a group when the topic came up, why this is, and the guy avs answered en masse: Free stuff, and, "I'd rather look at a female than a male (backside) if I have to look at my avatar's (backside) all day long."

FWIW.

Thanks for that Clarissa, thats very good to know that this topic has been asked before, very interesting!

Thanks for taking part in this, really helpful to get responses from genuinely interested people.

Perhaps a bit off topic but along the same vein, I suspect that many users have both male and female avies (2 separate accounts) that they use together for "the chance to be your own love object" as the quote goes.

Don't read the rest of this post if you haven't taken the survey yet and plan to!

Not exactly correct. The hypothesis the researcher is testing is about "need for achievement", which is not the same as self-esteem. A person could have low need for achievement but be happy with that and have high self-esteem; conversely, somebody with high need for achievement could be unhappy with a lack of achievement and thus have low self-esteem.

The need for achievement survey when given in other contexts has shown that, on average, men have a higher need for achievement than women. (As with all psychological data, the qualifier "on average" is very important!) The hypothesis that she is testing is that men who play women in MMOs will score lower (be more like women) and that women who play men will score higher (be more like men). Seems a reasonable subject for research, and the result will be interesting however it turns out.

I answered as truthfully as I could, however I do have a male and female AV, the male is me, the female is a tool for clothes making and selling, there was no way that I could indicate that, so I chose no to the question of alternate gender
I am me in SL, the same person that you would meet in RL or as close as it is possible to get :-)

First, the answers:

1. SL is not a game.
2. I don't "play" any gender, I am a woman in SL as I am in RL. The thought of being a male avatar never crossed my mind, well, yes, it did maybe as a joke.

From: Eily Babenco
Basically, I am trying to see what motivates people to choose the opposite gender.

Well that's very easy to answer if you spend a couple months in SL.

1. About 20-30% of all female avatars are guys (you will learn to identify them).
2. Basically all those guys do that because they prefer staring at a female ass over looking at a male one (just ask them, that's the answer you usually get.)
3. Virtually no woman has a male avatar. This is probably because women enjoy designing an idealization of their own body more, while some males prefer idealizing the body of an imaginary spouse (which explains the exaggerated features of many female avatars).

Read the last page.

LMAO - figures. My mother and daughter would both laugh hysterically at the above thought also.

I think I will definitely skip this one. I'm tired of invalid gender assumptions mostly due to someone's entire thought process starting with generalizations that have not been correct in more years than I have been alive.

Well, actually many of us have a male alt, but only for having that male figure to help with positioning pose balls (for cuddles and dancing, of course - nothing more)

I use my female alt for that - but she wears her tag I'M AN ALT, just to make it very clear :P

what bothers me about SL related surveys.....
SL is more like a place than a game.. there are games within the place

so studying SL is social anthropology.. in RL anthropologists go out into the field and get first hand knowledge...

so........... put on your pith hat.. break out the secret maps.. and get in and meet the natives for yourself.

Wow. To paraphrase teh narrator in "Joseph and teh Technicolor Dreamcoat" - "Who'd've thought that fourteen cows would mean teh things he said they did?"
Who'd've thought about our subconscious and our gender being definitions of our success and self-esteem. I just thought women were naturally better.

That is way below a student of higher affinity. But wait a minute ... isnt education one of our objectives? Isnt that why teens and scholars are flooding in?

ok my take...

First SL is a place not a game to me. Second there wasnt an option to just be.

You know a place where you can go and just be? Ok may seem odd to some but to me SL is a place for friends dont matter to me what they be... but to me it is a place to just be, no preconcieved notions no nothing. Just Be

Bec

And ps didnt have a male AV cause well it just didnt work :)

We could be anything in SL that we choose to be!

Also, I would like to mention, that I have of course met residents too in SL, and have chatted to them at length about this topic, which will also be included in my research.

Now, I'm investigating an overall group of people to take part. If I could personally interview each individual who took part, that would be wonderful! Unfortunately not completely feasible.

Also, people were not willing to speak to me about the subject, I struggled to find the few people who were willing to speak to me. I am not trying to generalise, I am trying to show/educate/and further inform about SL as a world.

Apologies for the word 'game', it's a world, I should know, I have been a part of it long enough!

I love the way people just ass-pull statistics like 20-30% of this, virtually none of that. Where exactly did you get those figures? The OP is trying to research this, whereas you are just making guesses. Educated guesses they may be, but unless you have some data of your own to reference they are nothing more than that. The plural of anecdote is not data.
