Help. A friend of mine in Europe was drunk and suddenly started talking about killing herself and logged before I could try to stop her. All I know is that she is in Europe and nothing else. Please help. She's a mother and I need someone to check on her.

LadyG,
I hope my answer doesn't sound cold hearted, but it's the facts. You can try contacting the Lindens and informing them of it. They are not likely to not do anything and that being the case there's nothing else you'll be able to do. For all you know they don't even have accurate information on her. There's no way to track a person down with the lack of information that you have. On the plus side, I can tell you most instances like this end ok, though your concern is completely justifiable. I wish you and your friend the best. _____________________

I apperciate it and I know there's not much to do here. I know that LL has her payment info so something could be looked into from that. Other than that I have nothing to go on or offer.

LL will not do anything, because the information cannot be trusted. This person could be lying to you, making it up to create drama. Not saying that it is the situation, but this is their point of view. With no way to verify, they aren't going to call authorities. I personally wish they would err on the side of caution but considering the large amount of drama queens in this game, I understand.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do now. Send her an IM and she may get it in her email. Suggest some online support sites, maybe. Sometimes, just letting the person know that you care enough about them to listen might give them the support they need to seek help on their own. Remember, you are not responsible for their depression and, unless you are an experienced grief counselor or therapist, do not make suggestions as how they should lead their lives, etc. You can only listen, point them in the right direction as to where they can get help, and offer your shoulder and ear.

sadly fake suicides are a Online staple of legendary proportions.
So is the 20 year old faking the "dying of cancer". Its impossible to know. It does really happen though. Someone I knew when I was new to SL killed herself a year ago nearly. I hope your friend is okay. And yeah LL wont do anything, I'm sure of that. |

Hmm they want drama huh, well if you can convince the police they are suicidal and they can find them, they will get plenty of drama ![]() Well there's not much you can do, you would possibly be way too late to have anything done regardless which is sad. Possibly you could make it worse too if the relatives are alerted too late and the person planned it not to look like suicide for the friends & relatives sake. _____________________

I personally wish they would err on the side of caution but considering the large amount of drama queens in this game, I understand. It's not just LL. Having worked most of my career in customer service it would be impossible to track all the suicide and emergency calls etc that come in. The best we could always do was refer threats to suicide prevention lines and those that wanted to stop them to local authorities. _____________________

I really feel for your situation. I once had a friend say something similar back in the old text only online games (when computers were made of stone). Luckily that person came back. We definately had no way of finding the real person in those days, but if the player has payment info on file, then LL does have the ability to try. A lot of people have said that LL will do nothing, but nobody has said that they've tried to get LL to check on someone in the same situation. Give it a try anyway. Maybe they'll do nothing, but the only thing you can do is contact LL and try. When your friend comes back, they will appreciate that someone cared enough to try to help.

Omg, I think I read something like this some weeks ago
![]() I think you can't do anything else that you are doing. Try to IM her and see if she replies or something... Or try to ask other friends of her if they have talked with her. Anyway, less than the 10% of ppl that say they are going to suicide, does, so I don't think you have to get really upset with this... As Linden Labs can't get involved in personal things if they aren't sure, dunno what can be done. Anyway contacting them may help you getting some information. Wish you and your friend the best. _____________________

LadyG, unfortunately you are very limited in how you can reach out to your friend right now. It's true that many people mention suicide who don't go through with it, but it is also true that most people who do end up trying to kill or killing themselves brought that possibility up in conversation in the period right before. At the same time, you can't let yourself think that you and you alone are responsible for saving her. You couldn't even if you were in the next room. When you talk to your friend tomorrow, which I will pray that you do, she will probably be embarrassed and lay it off on being drunk. You've had some great suggestions made about resources she could look into ... it would be wonderful if you could support her through this, but you cannot take it onto yourself as yours to fix. ((LadyG)) and ((her friend))
And slightly off-topic ... you know what? There are threads in which cracking a joke is fine and threads in which I, at least, think it is very wrong. This would be one. |

I am: * a lifelong wiseass-comment-meister * highly intolerant of drama queen tactics, of which suicide threats are epitomal * vehemently anti-PC Despite all of those things, I agree completely with Triz. _____________________

A lot of people have said that LL will do nothing, but nobody has said that they've tried to get LL to check on someone in the same situation. Apparently was told that LL feels they cannot pursue these. In common with many, tho not all, service providers. LadyG, I hope that you hear from your friend soon, and that she gets any help she may need. You have a good heart to reach out here, sorry we were not able to help more meaningfully! Oh, and welcome to the forums! Hope to see you posting more. |

Most of the time people who say they are going to commit suicide are just looking for attention.
Other than that, it's the ones who don't say anything at all you have to worry about. (with a history of depression of course) There is a small percentage of people who say they will do it and actually go through with it. But I have had a lot of my RL friends kill themselves...for reasons unknown, cause they never said a word. Anyway, I hope she didn't do it. I do not know her most likely, but it's still a sad state of affairs. Hope you can speak with her soon. Lilly |

i hope she is okay, and i hope that you'll find new, stable, friends who don't need to create false drama for attention. I fail to see how you know this to be false drama? I'm someone with serious mental illness & have felt suicidal many times & i'm honest about how I feel if I need to be. If she was drunk too then who knows. Nobody knows if she's creating drama or serious, all that matters to me is either way right now she needs a friend & Her friend here needs our support. I hope you've spoken to your friend now OP & that she's ok. I've had alot of online friends commit suicide which i've known is true as in a few cases i've been to their funerals, this is because I use forums for support of people with my illnesses. Some were open about wanting out, some didn't say but looking back on it they gave clues & some were gonna do it one way or another & eventually did. I'd rather try to help someone & them maybe turn out to be a drama queen than toignore it & they die. |

LadyG this same thing happened to a friend of mine a few months ago. The only thing that we were able to do to try and locate her was to IM any other friends that we knew of and we also went to any groups that she was in if we knew the location. When I got to the land group, I IM'd everyone both on and off line in it trying to find out if anyone had personal information about her. Sometimes names show up in "about land" access that do not show up in the group.
Finally someone did come on in that group that was friends of her rl X. Believe me, it was damn hard to get them to believe us too. He went to her house and stopped her. Actually he made her throw up, she had swollowed 30 pills. She was not pleased with us at all, but at least I was finally able to sleep that night knowing that she was alive and still breathing. What bothers me the most is that we couldnt get him to call an ambulance or doctor so she got no medical attention.. She does have someone else living with her right now other than her children. You can only do the best that you can do... Hopefully she has someone with her name taking care of her. One of my friends that was there helping, did telephone the Lindens. It was the middle of the night and believes that he got someone in India. They told him to put in a support ticket.... Yea sure that is really going to help. |
