Hi guys, I have had a really good play with this new SL-in-a-box, standalone version of OpenLife all this weekend, and I must say, I am amazed. I really started to get to grips with clothing making, shape building, hair, and many other features i had not the time to play with fully inside the regular SL because of lag (now non-existant), interruptions, my wireless link going down etc. This idea of having a single sim on your hard-drive, with no connection to the outside world whatsoever, is a really cool idea, almost perfect in fact. It's just, well, how can I put this, it's just a little lonely Going to try to get the house network fully up and running next to see if it is possible to log in from another machine in the house, and have two avis walking around. Now back to the real SL for a healthy dose of socialising. c u Rock

My RL tried downloading this standalone sim. It downloaded OK and the panel said the computer was adequate but the damn thing wouldn't open. It appears that I personally won't be able to visit this sim anyway, it would have to be some sort of freaky alt. - but now it looks like nobody's going there via my comp.

I also have been spending time at OpenLife and CentralGrid. Is a great new opportunity for everyone in my opinion. The biggest obstacle for me is to get inventory in these grids. I finally got some textures uploaded and made a build. The alternates or "Clones" are behind in size and features but SL started somewhere too right? *I think if people take the knowledge learned in SL and apply it to these new Grids they will come along just fine. Some big names in SL are also in CentralGrid..
*Vague reference to the "Sire Phillip" video that cracks me up to no end!

To clarify my earlier reply: My RL has been to Open Life and Central Grid and looked round them. They downloaded OK. What failed to work was the standalone sim mentioned in the OP - where you get an island, tools and avatar on your own PC and take it from there. Re the two online SL clones - interesting but obviously a long way to go. Shows how much there is to SL and how it wasn't all built in a day!

Can you attach anything at all to your avatar yet? Last I heard, you couldn't even wear a watch, let alone attempting to create a furry avatar or more complex attachments. No asset servers, many other things mising.

Can you build objects in one and move it into Second life? I want to get better at building and it would be easier if I wasnt being chatted with as I was working. I dont even need textures just get shapes and relationships right.

As I understand it you can set up your standalone sim to be accessed through the internet. So it could be used as a private sim for you and your mates or maybe a role play group. Think how much SL would loose from those wanting their own private area. maybe wrong as I'm not very techie but thats how i read it from the Openlife forum You can also add more islands if you wish

Ah! - but if these private standalone sims start to become popular, I bet LL would be able to offer their own ones for download, complete with all the features missing from these clones, but probably at a price, though much less than an SL island or mainland sim.

Been playing with openlife grid and standalone for about a week now... Am never returning to SL unless they start giving islands away for free.... Screw all adfarmers, screw all griefers...The pleasure of having 15,000 prims available all to oneself is priceless... and you can start as many sim in the standalone as you want...

Only way I am able to post is like this, using these post as a response cause all I keep getting is 503 while trying to respond any other way. Questions: What exactly is this Open Life? What's the purpose of it? I don't really know anything about it but one thing I do know is why are they investing time in this instead of working to fix the many problems we face daily in sl? Will this help sl in any way? And what are the advantages in using this new system they have, if any?

Having a standalone sim is cool....but...from reading this link below one gets the feeling that the banks and scammer stars are learning to circumvent SL entirely.....and are moving to "Open Grid" ..... fascinating posts and comments here: http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2008/01/25/opensim-worlds-lure-second-lifes-outcasts

I wondered that, but then it's no longer LL's problem then, is it? The open grid has a long way to go before it's worth anyone trying to set up a bank scam. Also their currency is L$ still, although they are non-exchangeable, in-game only L$, like on the Beta grid of SL.

One things for certain, the OpenGrid thing will have a whole different feel to it, because there won't be a secure economy. When inventories are available to anyone on their own computers, that means that you can hack whatever you want, give yourself money, etc.
This means that there won't be able to be an economy anything like there is in SL. Many of the designers in SL are doing it because they can make a little cash - those won't be around.
You won't be able to take objects out of SL and bring them back in, because of the hacking potential, so while it might be a good practice ground, I can't see it becoming a "development environment" like some people say.
In short, it sounds like a nice toy.

When inventories are available to anyone on their own computers, that means that you can hack whatever you want, give yourself money, etc. The way I see this working eventually, is, when you log in you get a set of capability uri's on your agent host that the sims can never see. The client could use the agent host to transact or do private asset operations. Separately, the agent hosts would talk to the sims if the client requested to rez an object or to trigger a payment notification to scripts or avatars in that sim. Sure you could! Currently there's an app called testclient that offers export and import functionality. I haven't tried it myself. Currently, just like LL, software authors are expected to write software that respects the permissions system.

Joining forces with the open source community was like giving away SL. Of course this would happen.

am not a computer software type person but I am pleased to say it works okay.
I have the download Sim and a spare SL client stored nicely on one of my hardware drives.
After you have opened and extracted all the files you should read the text help files first.
Several pointers.
Start the separate Sim software up first in administer mode (Vista) and leave minimised on space bar
Remember to create a separate text file to copy/cut and paste the target icon (SL Client), instructions in read me files
What you get is a nice full Sim tropical island estate with 15,000 prims of which you use with the SL client.
Download a spare SL client programme from Linden and store it separately, in case future Linden software updates make things buggy. Then when you use your own Sim you can reinstall old SL client software if necessary.
Can anyone tell me what commands I use to turn on menu God type options in the SL client??
Also think this is going to give some folk a bad day......there are many people who just like building and dreaming away in a virtual land......this enables you to do so for free.
Plus you control all your own assets and I can see it might be possible to import/export them too
