Yeah, I found that unchecked box eventually too. All is well now.

From: June Oh
Better half took one look at it and said did you need to buy that!
I think she thinks by its looks and the blue light its cost lots of money.

I'm getting used to it but just can't keep control of forward walking, the angle of view moves as well.
I believe the right switch can be made to do things. Any ideas? If yes tell me simplely how to do it, LOL

By adjusting the forward dead zone, (I think I took it all the way up to .5) I was able to stop my AV from dropping into a crouch when moving forward.

Torley says he may do another video and explore the settings a bit more. Not that I'm holding my breath. But tweaking the settings is a BIG part of getting the SN to behave itself.

You can change what both buttons do by going into the SN application, where you'll find a button configuration tab. The left button, which toggles flycam/avatar move, is perfect. The other button I have set for "esc" I'd rather have it set to alt, but you can't "lock" on to an object with the SN and follow it around or zoom in on it like you can when the mouse is in control.

Now that I've got one, and use it often, I find it would be very handy to have a keyboard combo that toggles joystick support on/off. That is, a keystroke that that accomplishes the same thing we get when we un/check the "use space navigator" box.

I also find that newer RCs fail to remember my settings for the Space Nav, so I'm going to try just getting used to the defaults for a while, until the client can reliably remember settings.

Adjusting the settings does help, though. I look forward to using a client that remembers my settings. Ideally, settings should be exportable to a plain text file, so that users can back up, reload, share, and even read thru their settings.

How has Space Navigator been for OSX lately?

I bought a space navigator back when mac support was just introduced but returned it as there were very few apps supporting it at the time. How is it today with SL, as well as 3D modelling apps?

better yet, anyone aware of mac support for the spaceexplorer? ...or spacepilot if you're rich or professional... My wrists need the investment.

Maybe. Someday when I'm bored with the Mouse/Keyboard route.

I tried setting the right key to "Alt" and all it does is make me jump or fly up if I'm already flying. Strange. Like you, I had hoped I cold use it like the Alt key on the keyboard.

Anybody have any luck setting the Avatar Z-scale? I pretty much have to lift the SN off the table to fly. I thought that if I set the Z-scale to 2 or 3 (similar to the flycam settings) that that might help. However Avatar Z-scale seems to max at 1.

Thanks,

Doug

I know SL supporting the space navigator Will SL ever support the Spaceball flx 4000 or 5000?

I plug mine in but when I look at the joystick panel it sees a sidwinder joystick.

Id hate to have to buy another space ball when I have one that aloready works with all my CAD apps.

My settings got lost from one version to the next too. But oddly enough, the defaults seemed OK all of a sudden. I really don't have any more problems with dropping into a crouch or jumping into the sky.

Z axis works fine too.

One thing I DID do was increase the overall speed by a couple notches. Now I turn fast enough to make it worthwhile.

SN works ok with SL. But it's still a far cry from the performance I get on Google Earth.

Could you be specific about where the "overall speed" setting is. I'm looking at the 1.20.8 RC client joystick panel and input panel and I don't see what you are talking about. I'd like to walk a little faster without running.

It's not in any of the Second Life clients, but rather the Space Navigator application that gets installed with the drivers.

In Windows, If your Space Navigator is working at all, and you haven't made any button changes, the 3DXWare app should pop up when you hit the right side button. Or you can just mouseover the task tray icons for 3DXWare, and select "Open Window." Sorry, I don't know if it's the same for Mac users.

Under the device configuration tab, upper left corner, you'll find the overall speed slider. I've got mine pushed about a fifth of the way from the left hand side. Before I set it there, turning was a little too slow. Now everything is a little snappier.

I just wish that there was more of an acceleration ramp, (play with Google Earth and you'll see what I mean right away.) Also that build mode was a little more controllable, and you could select things by alt clicking while in flycam mode.
