Why does this make the puzzle piece fit together? Wonder things have been failing art resently. I Like to see Philip Linden run the tech part of the game.

We both know it'd fail and horribly. Waiiitttt.. wasn't Cory the one that made the bet that Second Life would have more users than World of Warcraft and shortly after that, we had the flood gates open? _____________________

Before this thread gets much further, let's all take note that this story is published in a self-described "gossip rag", and the only evidence to back it up is the alleged word of an anonymous "tipster". And the story was clearly written by someone with an extreme dislike of SL. It might be wise to wait for confirmation before talking about any possible implications of this "news". At present, it's nothing more than unsubstantiated gossip.

Not just any gossip rag, but one with a prior record of being real negative about SL, most likely because being real negative is an easier way to fill space than being clever, witty, insightful, etc.
Might have some truth in it though, I haven't stopped to see yet. _____________________

Waiiitttt.. wasn't Cory the one that made the bet that Second Life would have more users than World of Warcraft and shortly after that, we had the flood gates open? As i recall Cory was, and soon after the flooding of freebie accounts ( WITHOUT REAL E-MAIL ADDRESS) another linden as well was very much honored that SL was to reach the maqic 1million alt mark ( i wonder if they stil feel this excited .I highly doubt it ). But now I wonder if this will lead to the closure of free accounts. The belief that SL would have as many members as World of warcraft still rings in my tail. Because that just smelled of a nightmare in the waiting, soon after problem after problem occured. blaming US then blaming themselves for making a horrily prodicted assumption. Now we are stuck in a game with countless under 18 kids, a UI that at times minded me how bad of a cook i am in RL and a future that doesnt look as bright as they prodicted. |

I spend $150+ in here each month, and often dont get a return. However, this article, even in a magazine that I personally hate (i live in silicon valley so i get enough of this already), makes me wonder if Areae may have had an influence on the CTO's "decision". Those guys in San Diego are really picking up steam. LL needs to spend less on marketing (who saw the horrible CSI episode that had to have cost millions of LL's own money) and more on a product that gets new visitors to stay. Please, LL, dont become another There. And please dont kick me out for talking sh** ![]() |

Didnt they product that we have over 50,000 online for the production? but we never reached 40,000 or so. Also dont Cory assume that we have 90,000 to 120,000 online during the peak of summer season? |

supposedly internal emails (copied from http://www.massively.com/2007/12/11/was-cory-linden-fired-or-did-he-quit/ )
Cory is going to leave LL. He has been with us for 7 years, and was the fourth person to join. So this is a big deal. Cory has been a huge part of the company, having designed big parts of SL, hired many people, contributed greatly to the culture, and given a powerful voice to SL and LL. Among other things, he had the original design idea for the love machine, single handedly wrote the scripting language, and got us all doing A&Os back in 2001. Losing him will be hard for the company. I will miss him a lot. What's worse is that ultimately his leaving is my decision. Cory and I have differences in how we think Linden should be run, differences that in the past few months have become irreconcilable. These are tensions that were more manageable when we were smaller, and there have been times that they have helped us do great work together. But now, as we change and grow as a company, I feel that we need a different set of strengths in engineering leadership. I strongly believe that this is the right decision, although not without pain, for both LL and Cory. Of course, I'm not going to go into the details of these differences. This is one of those times when, in having me as your leader, you will also have to trust me in my decision. I will hold a brown bag as soon as possible to talk about this with anyone who would like, and will schedule time both in-world and in person here in San Francisco. Please send any external questions you get about this change to Robin who will make sure they get answered. Philip Trying to sum up 7 years of work at Linden is an impossible task. All nighters at the Linden Street office. Gaining 20 pounds but then losing 70. Flying 350,000 miles on Linden travel. Recruiting and hiring many of you. Creating a programming language that now had 2.5 billion lines of code written in it – note to self, next time spend more than one night designing language. Changing the world. It has been an absolute thrill working with all of you on Second Life. When Philip looked across a rickety card table in November of 2000 and told me that we would do more than build a great product, we needed to build a great company, too, I knew it would be a wild ride. Through the peaks and the valleys, Philip's ideas challenged and inspired me. They often led to solutions I would never have considered and helped to make Second Life what it is today. I continue to believe in both Second Life and Linden Lab, but Philip and my visions for the future of Linden Lab are divergent enough that he decided to lead in his own way. While I will miss all of you, I have confidence in engineering - in all of you - to adapt and excel going forward. You are a phenomenal collection of talents and I know that both Linden Lab and Second Life will be hugely successful. Cory _____________________

regarding the word "fired"
12-11-2007 19:26
I dont think one chief officer can just tell another chief officer "youre fired!" im sure it gets a lot deeper and was more of a mutual agreement.

I would love to know what those "differences" are---
To prevent endless wild speculations, they should be more candid. |

Or, possibly, there was pressure from major players outside of SL. Meaning the spenders on sl. Or the commerical users that now more present then the common user. |

But this is already more information than many companies would voluntarily give; most would just say the equivalent of "He's leaving to pursue other opportunities". |

The matter if he left or was fired is not important. That is if this story is correct, and if the plans of a new plans for sl. We sure can use a new vision since the one to open up the game without paying for it is now showing iits signs of blight and fatness. Some of the links i can believe some are just more shit from someone trying to finish here research report paper.
