I've been a resident of Wainscot for nearly two years now and have 'roadside' land. For most of this time I've been hassling the Lindens to run the road up there and I've always had a 'other things are more important' reply. I've just noticed a few sims down from me in Malacosoma though that there is a road, the last bit seems to have been created on October 3rd.
Now I know that's a few weeks back now but has there been a recent push to get some roads put in? I think they make an area look so much better and we've been waiting so long that the residents have run our own small road network around Wainscot.
Bring on the roads!

I like them, too..
Check the owner on them. Are they Linden roads? I know there's a resident road building group (or 2?) going but don't know if they're actually building yet...

Regarding the question.
Really the roads mainly date back to those days when SL was supposed to be a virtual world, there were easy sim transitions, telehubs, no point to point Tps rules that you had to allow a fly-bye path, etc.
So these days I doubt they are a priority.

Some roads being built, but not well
10-30-2007 20:30
Someone complained here a few weeks ago that their Linden roadway finally got a road... a road he didn't expect and didn't want. Unfortunately it was also built pretty badly... high above the land, simple box prims poorly textured. It didn't look nice.

Unfortunately it was also built pretty badly... high above the land, simple box prims poorly textured. It didn't look nice. If you mean the mess in Dorje, I still haven't figured out how to make that obstacle a plus :/ so I started trying to figure out how to do round roofs neatly instead of fretting over it anymore. Maybe someday they will fix it so you don't fall into it when you try to drive or walk on it. I did finally get a reply for the ticket I turned in on the botched road, it said folks generally see the roads as assets (paraphrased) which tells me the person did not even bother to look at what I was talking about.

i like the railroads, even though i dont see trains on them and such. i think a road looks nice for no other reason than making the millions of roadside ads look less random. From: Colette Meiji Wow this thread self-Godwin's

Agreed. On a side note, questions about a possible road building group sanctioned by LL have been raised; Xplorer Cannoli is the go-to guy on this project. I put up a JIRA proposal, https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-602for this issue.

So these days I doubt they are a priority. Even though roads aren't "necessary" in SL they are still nice for orientation. When I first got here I was very confused. I couldn't figure out what was going on or what to make of the mish mash of buildings. In RL we have roads to orient us. It's been that way for thousands of years. I think it's difficult to throw that thought process out overnight.

If not for roads we might as well have no doors or windows, share common walls and all have roof hatches instead. Roads give an area front and back order and also having a road in your sim means that the maximum load that may be put on the sim by scripts and prim usage may only be 90% as the roads may reserve 10% of the resources but only use 1%. Same goes for water and other protected land. Roads and paths also mean you can walk to a sim neighbours rather than having to teleport 60m due to residents in between having ban lines up.

Look up Rosieri on the map (mainland sim), you'll find a big road network going out in several directions for quite a few regions, if you're looking for somewhere to ride or drive from.

I bought road front property in Grey Corner through the now disabled "first land" program. I still have that land, on the border of Brolga, it houses the in-world offices for my blog, Second Slice. I'd love to see the road completed, I love to expore the sims using existing roads, they serve as a sort of path to follow and you're more likely to cross the paths of other residents doing the same, instead of just flying around with no real purpose.

Build your own road. Link 2 10x10 sections of road (There are textures in the library) to a third prim that is a sidewalk or something. Keep the sidewalk prim's centerpoint on your land and slide the road sections out over protected land. There are dozens of regions that use this exploit to create a more finished look for their sim and LL does not mind, they actually encourage it. Roads help to create a sense of community in the region and I have found most neighbors are willing to pitch in a few prims and help with a project like this that benefits everyone.

Broccoli thanks for the tip, but so far all the roads there are no-rez territory :/

From: Yuukie Onmura thanks for the tip, but so far all the roads there are no-rez territory :/ In hindsight...that was the first indication that LL had their collective heads rammed up in a dark place. I remember flying from the old OI to a mainland with a road...and then the crushing disappointment I felt when I couldn't even rez my crappy little shoebox car to DRIVE ON THE FREAKIN' ROAD. If it weren't for Lil Sturgis...

awww mention of malacosoma brings a little tear to my eye. it was where i bought my first little plot, then i expanded it and sold to a neighbouring elf village. i fondly recall the fence chatter with his drow wife. From: Landing Normandy ...I've just noticed a few sims down from me in Malacosoma though that there is a road, the last bit seems to have been created on October 3rd. and then i bought land on cipactli i remember it having a large netword of user created roads as well. If it weren't for Lil Sturgis... yea, lil sturgis is a possibility... IF you bought your ironheads black widow just to parade up&down the main street there. which i didnt... i found a few places to rez, just walk off the linden roads and rezz on a meadow. that, of course, doesnt change the fact that mainland by now is in such a bad shape that you're likely to crash, hard and painfully, at the next sim border.

We have good roads and waterways in and around Mooaleo. The road near me is no rez, but if anybody wants to rez a vehicle on my little roadside plot they are welcome ... http://slurl.com/secondlife/Mooaleo/243/173/33/Autoreturn is 5 mins so no lengthy pit-stops. Oh, and apologies for the nasty noisy griefing objects on next door's parcel, we are onto it!

I don't think it would work in my home sim as even a flagpole gets returned from the protected land it its centre point is over the boundary so what chance a highway?

*bump* LL (or some Lindens anyway) is looking into possible ways to recruit residents to finish the roads. It was more of an "initial thoughts" and things that need to be taken into account, but good news overall .
