Originally the term referred to opium users in the early 20th century. If you know, you are hip.

Right now?
Hmmm 1. Listening to Rogue Traders singing "Voodoo Child" for a change. 2. Reading Joseph Boyden's "Through Black Spruce" 3. Watching "Bright Star" 4. Owning a complete set of "Gourmet" magazines 5. Sapphires. 6. Owning a Royal Academy Catalogue for 2009 and appreciating it. 7. Going on a Fall camp and eating Walleye and Northern Pike by lamplight. 8. Being honest. 9. Getting into the spirit of Halloween and horror by reading "The Turn of the Screw" 10. Eating a salad of thinly mandoline sliced Fennel bulb with green beans and chopped tomatoes and drizzled with olive oil, lemon juice and orange juice. 11. Shoulder totes in brightly dyed leather. 11. Toronto restaurants. (Pearls are always Hip worn with a white Teeshirt, blue jeans and sandals) _____________________

1. Listening to Rogue Traders singing "Voodoo Child" for a change. Definitely 2. Reading Joseph Boyden's "Through Black Spruce" Sure. With bonus marks for Canuck content! 3. Watching "Bright Star" Pretty cool, yes, but "hip"??? Hmmmm. Was Keats ever "Hip"????? 4. Owning a complete set of "Gourmet" magazines Ohhh, a false step here, I think. I love cooking (no, really!), but Gourmet??? Hmmm. 5. Sapphires. Maybe . . . 6. Owning a Royal Academy Catalogue for 2009 and appreciating it. No, too legit and establishment to be "Hip." You need to be focussing on the small independent galleries, full of stuff by people who are SO hip they will NEVER be appreciated or understood except by themselves. 7. Going on a Fall camp and eating Walleye and Northern Pike by lamplight. Dunno. In Canada, this would almost be Bob and Doug McKenzie territory . . . 8. Being honest. Uhhhhh . . . 9. Getting into the spirit of Halloween and horror by reading "The Turn of the Screw" Great story, but only "Hip" if someone has utterly mutilated it to turn it into a black and white graphic novel. 10. Eating a salad of thinly mandoline sliced Fennel bulb with green beans and chopped tomatoes and drizzled with olive oil, lemon juice and orange juice. Yeah, another definite. As long as the presentation isn't too chichi. 11. Shoulder totes in brightly dyed leather. Yes, definitely. 11. Toronto restaurants. Some of 'em, for sure. More bonus marks for CanContent! (Pearls are always Hip worn with a white Teeshirt, blue jeans and sandals) I'd agree, if I could afford pearls . . . ![]() _____________________

I'd agree, if I could afford pearls . . . ![]() YOU are a pearl! Okay, then Hip are the Yorkville galleries and eating a lunch on a rooftop restaurant patio. Royal Acad was good this year ![]() Sometimes Legit. is Hip when its great legit. By the way, Scylla, pick up a copy of "Lost in Austen" - 4 parter from BBC - you'd like it. And Keats was so coooool he was off the Hip Scale. Check him out again. And Gourmet just went under this month. Which is terribly sad. _____________________

. Ohhh, a false step here, I think. I love cooking (no, really!), but Gourmet??? Hmmm. . ![]() Jig is on target here. Gourmet is going out of business after what, like 50 years in business or something like that? Might be more. Those older ones are going to be collectors items for some Now I kind of wish I hadn't throw out all the ones I had from the 90's onward, when I moved. ![]() _____________________

Are you a Tower of Power fan by any chance? Not as a rule - Green Day is more my speed - but stumbled across one of their CDs and listened to that song, over and over, on the way home from work the other day. It's just one of those funky tunes that good to cruise home to sometimes. ![]() _____________________

Those older ones are going to be collectors items for some Now I kind of wish I hadn't throw out all the ones I had from the 90's onward, when I moved. ![]() Just to make you all madly envious ... I have been allowed to combine my Mum's collection of gourmet with my own and since she had been buying back issues and collecting them from when she was a kid we now have Gourmet stretching back consistently to June 1965. Which isnt bad. My real friend Lynx told me just tonight as I boasted of this fact that I was not to get any ideas about leaving them in my will to her since she has a "thing" about magazines. But I have 44 years of consistent Gourmet and I am 28 ![]() _____________________

Hipness is reflexively ineffable: as soon as anything is said to be hip, by definition, it's no longer hip.
That's especially true if, as a result of being called "hip", the thing becomes popular. (Twitter, as a geek-chic example.) _____________________
