OK, so I noticed I sit on my ass a lot since 04. Not a little, when I started this fools folly my butt could have been considered in many countries to be just outside of petite. Now my cheeks hit arm-rests as I slide myself into my ol comfy chair. I will give myself a bit of slack for my recent sedientary lifestyle but when escape becomes imprisonment it's time to take some stock. My ass no-one in SL fairy happy land can help me with but..As per my message header. I am also a smoker. I smoke..A lot. I have recently noticed I smoke a lot more when my fat arse is firmly ensconsed in this chair, on these forums trolling the good people who have serious questions and in world..Basically doing the same thing. I'm not proud of it but, meh, I have grown bitter. So, apologies out of the way my question is this. Are there, any groups in sl, IN world. that offer mutual support for a person wanting to quit the habit? And if not, would there be an honest interest in such a group? I would love some serious feedback but if you feel the need to throw pies..Well..Thow a fork as well. And some ice dream..Mmmm..Ala-Mode

I would love some serious feedback but if you feel the need to throw pies..Well..Thow a fork as well. I gave up earlier this year Amy, so I know what you are going through. I'm sure there must be a support group in SL somewhere, and if there isn't, it sounds like a great idea! As for weight, well I chuckled at your description <g> Seriously, whether carrying more weight than someone would like or not, if they sit at the PC for long periods of time, daily exercise is muchos important (even if it's only a 30 min brisk walk). The list of potential health problems associated with sitting at the PC all day is endless. I hope you find some support in SL, congrats on taking the first step, and I hope it's the first step towards a healthier Amy. Good luck! |

Is this true?? It's really illigal to smoke in our cars? I smoke in mine, I don't consider the inside of my car a public place ![]() It's illegal via smoking laws to smoke in a vehicle that can be considered an extension of the work place e.g. courier vans, etc. As for smoking in your own car: there is also the issue of it being a distraction to driving. So I think it maybe against the law if taken from that angle (in a similar way cell/mobile phones are viewed) - the law hasn't changed in that regard, it's just that it appears to have become more of an issue to be debated recently. |

Like what? *gets scared* Just the DVT alone is enough to kill you. (Deep Vein thrombosis) Clots. They move to you're lungs they change the name to Pulminary embolizm. It heads north to your brain..Well..They call them strokes. 50/10 is a good ratio. for every 50 minutes on your pc get up and move, stand, do squats, whatever. |

Like what? *gets scared* You can get 'minor' injuries such as repetitive strain injury, but there is also risk to your circulatory system. I don't know if you are aware of the risk of deep vein thrombosis on lang-haul flights? Well this is also a risk to those who sit at their PC all day. Blood clots can form in your leg veins, which of course can dislodge and enter the heart or brain - so there is a direct risk of heart attack or stroke. Not only are there the health issues directly associated with sitting at your PC all day, there are dozens of health issues that result from you generally not being very active. |

Scary.

DVT..... You must have to sit an awfully long time for a blood clot to form, right?
That`s like those bed bound people who cant get up and walk and end up getting clots which may move to their heart. Or is this something you can get easily? Is there any bad affect computer 'radiation' can have on your body? I guess that`s what im concerned about. I do not stay put on my computer, but working from home with a lot of graphic design work/newfoud love of SL I am on it more than I used to be. I did notice my laptop makes me get bad vision, whereas my desktop I can work on it and my eyes feel completely fine. _____________________

I don't think the LCDs are as bad as the CRT screens. And the CRT screens were never to bad save for the + ion radiation and the strong magnetic fields right next to your head. Pre 1990 Televisions on the other hand..*Shudders* |

hmmm
Smoking in the car is now classed as " driving without due care and attention " allthough its not likely you will every get pulled on it .... if you were found to be smoking when in an accident they can and will fine you and give you 9 points As for SL related illness .... I think judging by a couple of threads today ....stress and bad attitude seems to be a majoy player *lol* _____________________

There is a lot of disagreement on the radiation issue: most consider it not to be a health risk, but there are many studies on this very issue currently taking place. It's worth noting that we are swamped in radiation, natural radiation aside, your cell phone and many other appliances emit low frequency radiation, so if it is an issue, it's not something you can really avoid by not looking at your monitor. If it concerns you, keep a reasonable dsistance from the monitor, as the 'radiation density' drops off to the inverse cube of distance.
The biggest risk to the eyes is eye strain. |

I love radiation ..... its the best thing going ....
I love it when somebody with skin like leather and tanned to hell and back talks about the dangers of mobile phones *grin* On a serious note though ....... thiere is virtually NO radiation from TFT screens as they dont use electron guns to operate like CRT's do, proberly the most radiation is in the air anyway in the form of Radiowaves, Microwaves ...... Microwaves are especially dangerous ... if dropped from a hight they can cause significant damage *lol* _____________________

As for SL related illness .... I think judging by a couple of threads today ....stress and bad attitude seems to be a majoy player *lol* It's not a bad attitude!!! .. I just haven't had my triple Espresso .. ohh kayyy?!?!? seriously though .. DVT .. a dear friend who 'probably' spent a little too much time at his PC sadly died of it .. his last words to his wife "say bye bye to the (Starship Titanic) forum from me?" Radiation; the old CRT monitor I used to sit next to when not actually at the keyboard gave me headaches. The screens hurt my eyes whereas TFT with their pinpoint pixels much better. And ventilation; I believe the power supply units develop a small quantity of Ozone. Certainly old televisions did. Well, it stands to reason good ventilation can only be an improvement doesn't it? Right .. <tremble> .. wh-wh-where's that coffee?!?!? _____________________

Heh- I always tend to smoke MORE sitting at the computer than doing something like manual labor.
And thats hand-rolled, unfiltered cigs. Yet its also LESS than what I smoked when I only had dial-up. As for RSI (repetitive strain injury) thats another story... ![]() I also make it a point to stand up & stretch every so often. BTW, Amy- easiest solution to a growing posterior- walk. Alot. Get up, move around. Instead of driving a mile.... walk. My fiancee , at the age of 22, still has the backside of her 16 yr old self due to walking 6 miles a day. Not a speck of fat or cellulite on her. Oh yes! I'm a very happy man!! ![]() _____________________

If it's practical, try banning smoking in the house. Force yourself to go and stand outside if you want to smoke. I found it cut down a lot on the amount I smoked. And with winter coming it's going to get very unattractive to do. Also gives you at least a little bit of exercise, probably enough to keep the DVT at bay. Also makes the house smell much nicer
.Of course it only works if you have a house or live on the ground floor. I just moved to a 4th floor flat so now I just stick my head out of the window. |

When people ask me when I plan on quitting smoking my responses are:
A) "I'm not a quitter Dammit!!" and B) "I know the day I quit smoking is the day I get hit by a tractor trailer while crossing the street to go to the supermarket to get my nicotine patches" Try smoking a pipe (water pipes are my personal favorite ) - they tend to go out when you arent paying attention and therefore you may actually smoke less, while still having that oral fixation attended and your chemical levels maintained._____________________

I used to smoke for a number of years, and no game was more responsible for a mass increase in my daily intake than Civilization (the first one). I know full well how easy it is to chain smoke and sit at the PC.
However, there's a lovely lady in world that I communicate with, and while she's a smoker, she makes a point of smoking outside only. This limits her smoking (and keeps her place smelling better, I imagine). Of course, quitting cold turkey is the way to go, and I've been down that road. That was difficult, but doable. Good luck! _____________________

Working in educational establishments I never smoked in my workroom.
Like Wulfric, I didn't smoke indoors at home but made the point of standing in the garden or if shelter required, the garage. Like Pie, I tried a pipe once, the Meerschaum rather than the water and yes, the object itself became a comfort even when not lit. I do recommend it .. even the girls! Hell! you don't have webcams do you?!?!? )_____________________

I’ve found that I’m actually smoking less. I don’t smoke in the house so that helps keep my cigarette count down. Plus when I have been naughty and sneaked a smoke in, I found it very difficult to type and smoke at the same time.
Weight wise I have actually lost over 30 lbs since January. I don’t eat at the pc either, and often skip meals and no munching between meals. I visit my doctor and monitor this closely. I am right on target with my Body Mass Index (BMI) now, so the weight I’ve lost was helpful. Now of course is the time to start some sort of exercise routine that doesn’t interfere with my SL time, maybe in the mornings. Anyway I too would interested in some sort of in world smoking cessation group. |

It has really helped me to have my computer set up so that I work standing up. I have a stool so I can take rest breaks but it is not comfy enuf for me to veg out in. And it might help with the smoking since you are signaling yourself that you want to change if you get out of the chair. I find that being at the computer standing also makes me move around more during the day as I can visit my computer while doing other art work without getting trapped by the sedentary mind set.
I encourage people to try it; I keep arm weights near by as well..and take exercise breaks. The Mysti tool has a timer and that helps remind me if I've been on for an hour. Its amazing how fast time flies when you are on these forums or inworld. Good luck Amy, I quit smoking too and it was well worth it. There is a place called Support for Healing...maybe they could help? There are some good councilors in SL too who could be supportive for a fee. Again, good luck. |
