Hi there
Have been on SL about 4 months now. Last week I bought some land from a friend last week 9/4/009.
The very next day, I visited my plot and out of the blue someone has built a gi huge tower block almost in front of my sea view. It doesn't appear to contain anything and it is an eyesore.
My question, is this allowed, am I being subjected to a ruthless land owner erecting this, in the hope that I may sell my land cheap?
Is this a regular occurrence in SL?
Veiws please.

It happens often. It could be an attempt to get you to sell. If the tower is not encroaching on your land, I don't think there is much you can do. If it is, file an Abuse Report. If he starts doing other things to bother you, you may have grounds for a harrassment AR as well.

Put up a skybox so you can see over the tower.

If you're feeling feisty, put it within view of the tower, and make it reeeeeal uglified.

I'm afraid that's why land directly on a beach next to a Linden ocean is usually so much more expensive than land one parcel away from the beach. I'm sorry you lost your view. With any luck, you can wait out the tower owners, but even if the land changes hands, there will probably be some sort of building on the beach lot.

Don't mind me, but the title of this thread reads like a cryptic crossword clue.

Waiting it out *usually* solves the problem. However, the downside of the mainland is that you have no control over the view unless you own it.

Life is easier if you learn to live with your neighbors' questionable taste.....

There are blinder walls you can get (or even make) that can help too. You won't get your ocean view but you can take a few megaprims and line them up against that border. Make them full transparent and then slap a nice picture of the ocean up on your side of the blinder. (Typically I would set the megaprims to phantom so people can pass through, but it's not needed).

This definitely isn't as pretty as your normal view, but it's better than a skyscraper.

TIP: Rather than using a real life picture - go some place in SL that DOES have a good view and snap a nice 512x512 (or 1024x512 if you are going to spread it over several prims that are wider than tall - and then set the repeat values and adjust so you can get a seamless image).

If you use a picture from within SL, it'll look more natural there and it'll seem more like it's just part of the view - at least from a distance anyway.

If you know nothing of texturing and megaprims and all of that - there are several places in SL that sell blinds like this that are ready to go.

Instead of putting up these things - which are even more hideous than buildings - why not at least talk to the builder first.....

i use my land so i don't have to derezz things and can take my time building or not have to fight lag in a sand box..

although i would not put up eye sores on the ground..i would rather get along with the people that lived around me..

but if i had the beach and put my house up i liked that happened to block someones view then it would not be my problem because i am the one that bought that lot for the view..

if they own the land on the beach and you are behind them..it's pretty much their ocean view..
this is why i love corner lots in private island..two beaches for the price of one and no blocking.. ;)

One of the first things I learned in SL was "If you want to keep your view, you own your view".

They, just like you, pay for their land to do as they please. Yes it impacts badly at times but it's just the way it is.

Couldn't have said it better myself... my thoughts exactly.

You're best bet is to try to fight the desire to talk to them about it. You never know what his or her intentions are, and if pissing you off is what they're trying to do, don't give them the satisfaction of knowing they got to you by mentioning it. Alot of builds are short lived in SL, and maybe they'll grow tired of it quickly. If you do decide to talk to them about it, try to get a feel for what type of person they are before you approach the subject of the eyesore.

This happens way too often. I hope soon one day LL codes in to the software the ability to make muted objects invisible.. . Would be the best thing in the world to combat that type of behavior..
There is however a Alternate viewer which is adressing this issue with MUTE VISIBILITY found on second life wiki

Able Edition

Description

This is a Windows viewer is an unofficial build which adds a Mute Visibility feature, which allows objects in-world to be rendered partially or entirely invisible.

Extra Features

Mute Visibility Improvements to the Mute List Muting objects applies to entire linksets

I think it would be worth thwarting their efforts :)

I'd love to not mind you, but you keep butting in to conversations I'm trying to read for knowledge. Would you please go police another forum, maybe on the other side of the world, for awhile? You're unsolicited grammar policing is just plain annoying.
