Really looking forward to the full intergration of shadows to SL. Makes such a big diference to look and atmosphere. Everything is so much more readable and easier on the eye with shadows.
It would be such an amazing leap forward for the 'look' of SL.
Lilith and I thought we would share some screenshots, as I must admit we got quite excited seeing shadows in SL.
Please use the link to see some SL screenshots with yummy shadows on Lilith's photostream at Flickr.

The question is .... When will we get these lovely shadows in the main client ?

And will my computer be able to run SL at all?
Cool, though!

Ya, I *so* wish I could run this on my computer - but unfortunately it's not for every system, and even some nice, top end ones are out of the running based on graphic cards. :-/

What will happen to a skybox that is built using "baked in" shadow and light effects if SL introduces its own shadows?

It's not just you. Kirsten stopped public development of SL viewers recently. I put an older version (SD2-R7) on Rapidshare a while back when she took her downloads offline once before, I think it's still there: http://rapidshare.com/files/170575156/Kirstens_SD2-R7.exe.htmlI have some later versions somewhere, I'll track them down and upload them if anyone is interested. SD2-R7 is the last one where the snapshot function works, so it's the one I use. On a tangent, I also had an issue with later viewers not rendering some things. Like the letters on lucky chairs.

I have SD2-R4, and it is awesome! Not only are there shadows, but the OpenGL limit on light sources is gone and it seems to blend multi-layered prim water to a smooth single layer for my ponds. Of course with an nVidia 8600M GT, FPS is not very good!

I found them! Go to http://www.4shared.com/then search for "Kirstens", several different versions are hosted there.

From: Alvaro Zapatero No Mac version? Nothing for Mac, or for Linux, that I have ever heard. And on Windows, it is only for a very few high-end cards. Oh well... I certainly won't be seeing shadows on any of my computers, any time soon.

Bummer. Apparently I have one of those graphics cards for which shadows don't work. Oh well, at least I still have S16....

The source code is still available in LL's svn repository.
I can compile for win and linux. not mac though.
Remember this is not Kirstens client. It is LL's. So Kirsten quitting does not mean it is gone.
If you can compile for mac, and would like a spot to host the binaries please send me a PM

How do you guys know that the 3rd party viewer is safe and will not steal your account info? Seems pretty risky...

I'm looking forward to when we get full dynamic shadows. I hear that they are on the cards but not for a while. I tried the Kirsten viewer some time ago but my graphics card wasn't compatible - it worked but even with the tweaks there were no shadows. For people whose computers aren't up to doing shadows, I think I'm right in saying they will be disabled, as is the case with Windlight skies and water reflections at the moment.

For people whose computers aren't up to doing shadows, I think I'm right in saying shadows will be disabled, as is the case with Windlight skies and water reflections at the moment. So it shouldn't affect their SL performance. In fact, isn't that the case already, that the standard viewer could draw shadows but they are disabled for everyone? If you look up 'Second Life shadows' on Youtube or Google, there are more pics and videos of SL with dynamic shadows.
