Okay a question for my fellow builders about circles....

does anyone know a way of cutting a prim to produce a segent of a circle as shown by the green portion of the circle in the diagram of this article :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circular_segment

rather than a 'pie shaped portion' ...

I can get half a circle but can't make the straight edge of the segment any smaller than the diameter of the circle I started with.

Ive tried tinkering with spherical prims and converting them back to cylinders but it doesnt work.

I wish Lindens would give us some new shapes and new ways of cutting them......Would be nice for this builder to have some new types of 'lego bricks ' to work with inworld....

and computer buffs ....

would it be that complicated to introduce a method whereby two or more points could be marked on a prim and then have it 'sliced' between them ??

If you're not particular about dimensions, you can 95% hollow a cylinder with a square hollow shape and then path cut it.

"Slice"... not too sure about what you have in mind. May want to try out the new "slice" Editor feature in the RC (does what we used to have to do with dimpling a sphere and changing back to a box or cylinder).

your just bored, you already asked this in the building tips. but I would support your request for more ways to split a prim. I would just like a hexagon, can't be hard, a circle is just made up of many straight sides, so just make a circle with less sides?

I have no idea, but that math sure brings back memories. *sigh* Back when life was easy and all we had to worry about was the next geometry test and the party on saturday.

Did I ?

When ?

I need to go back and see if any one came up with anything useful.

And in fact the reason I asked was because I needed a specific piece for a build...

of course theres always someone round here ready with a 'snitty ' answer

That worked the one thing I never thought of....THANKS SO MUCH

NICE TO SEE SOMEONE STILL HAS THE IDEA OF WHAT BEING HELPFUL MEANS :d

Hey Maelstrom I wasn't being snitty, I made the wrong assumption that you did post this before, and I'm sure you will understand why…

"Can I make this shape?
It seems as if I should be able to, but I haven't been able to figure it out (the shape in green on this page) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circular_segment.

Thank you in advance."

Apologises for the assumption.

Hey Malestrom. Apparently someone else asked essentially the same question in Building Tips, just a couple days ago, right down to a link to the WIKI for explaining what they were asking about.

/8/83/317361/1.html

The exact shape you want can't be made directly in SL. Not with regular prims. A sculpty could do it.

Or you can also get close by hollowing and path cutting a cylider, making a square hole in the middle and adjusting the path cuts to hit the corners of the square hole. The tips end up slightly clipped with that, however, and it only makes one of the many types of circular segments out there.

I'm sure there's a request for this, as it would be really useful. A true n-sided geometric prism, even if they only offered n=6 or 8. As you say, the cylinder is only the same thing with n=infinity (or in SL, n=as much as possible).

anther option might be .5 dimple plus compress the z direction, but it may be a little more rounded at the edges.
