I was just looking at your sig. That's a good one! I hate to toot my own horn (who am I kidding, I love tooting my own horn. I just feel so dirty afterwards), but that's some of my finer workmanship there.

Are you projecting? No, you can't be. No high impact hugs were involved.

It was a good one, in fact it was much longer but I couldn't fit it all in here!

/me bows down in supplication, pixie palms extended to the warm ground, golden hair flowing over me as I murmer softly to Mr. Recreant that there is no need to feel dirty and remind him how beautiful his words make me feel each time I read them.

(Here I go, offending people again...beware)

....I certainly wouldn't say RP is 'easy.' There's quite a lot of rules to follow, and these rules can be very subtle at times. If you don't know what you're doing, and aren't willing to ask...you'll be banned quicker than you can say, 'Baby Fishmouth.'...
I is a serious loli nowes... (=_=)

</character>

You know, there are some avatar types that require RP 99% of the time, no matter what sim you're in. So when -I- say that RP is easy for me, it's because that's almost all that SL is for me. But I'll gladly step out of my role sometimes to gloat and compete with others about computer specs. (^_^) That said....

<character>

Being a kid in SL is EPIC! \(^_^)/ Go ahead and be offending... I'll be annoying and we can totally make a forum grief team. (^_^)y

I understand...but I don't think the OP was talking about RP in the sense of SL as RP in general--he was talking about RP as in RP specific. That's what I was commenting on. At least, I'm pretty sure that's what [they] meant...like Gor or Nexus Prime, or Star Trek...the real deal.

This OP is a female. Just for future reference. :) But yes, I am speaking about specific RP areas, with storylines and the whole bit. It is all so intriguing.

Letty, a good place to start for a medieval roleplay sim is probably avilion, altho i don't go there much anymore it was one of my first places i went to in SL and fell in love, the roleplay is light there and everyone is always nice. TP into the main gates or the ballroom if you can as there are usually sentry's posted at these positions (especially the main gate) and there always happy to help out new comers. there's free gowns available so you don't need to worry about buying a new wardrobe if you don't want to. make sure to grab a copy of the rules as you go through the gates and find somewhere to sit down and have a read.

Then Just have a look around the sims there, ask a few questions, see if you would like to be a non human character. maybe a fae/faiery, elf, drow (dark elf), dragon, orc/ogre or remain human, whatever you want to be. there will always be someone willing to show you around as well, it's a pretty big place with lots of hidden area's. if you'r looking for a group of people, there's nearly always someone at the drum circle.

avilion always has lots of events on (mostly during US time tho unfortunatly) plenty of games and it's honestly just alot of fun there with alot of room to enhance your role play character or just be yourself and sit around having a chin wag to some interesting people

sorry, i should probably get paid for promoting the place :P but i don't, like i said i don't go to often anymore, got a building bug :P. but if you'd like someone to show you around (and your up at aussie time) i'd be happy to

Damn you...you got my ONE 'he' that I tried not to use. Notice the rest is gender-unrelated.

I slip up, and you call me on it. I'm kidding...thanks for letting me know...obviously I wasn't sure.

Roleplay isn't easy for sure, even I've seen some bad ones in my limited time, but it isn't Shakespeare either. A little imagination and and decent communication skills, verbal or written depending on your preferences are all you need to get started. If you are lucky yo can sometimes meet up with a good player who will set things up so well that you just follow along naturally.

Letty, you have peaked my interest! I've never even thought abour RP until reading your post. It's always fun to discover "a first" in SL and I've shopped so much that I need a break from it! It actually sounds like a lot of fun. If you want another RP noob to join ya, lemme know :)

RP is easy... Remember how everyone tells you "Just be yourself"?.... Break that rule. (^_^)y

It's not so easy, you must abide by rules, speak a certain way in character, and another out of character, aslo.. established RP some areas just dont like new people.

Try Tombstone, or dodge city.. I plan on trying that one myself. yeeehaw!

Tombstone is fun and the people there were pretty laid back and easy going about their RP when I was there. Nobody made fun of me even though I screwed up a few times.

Odd, coming from a community of people that have trouble using Voice. And hey, as my late Father used to say, '...if the shoe fits, wear it.' Meaning, if I'm not talking about you, don't take offense. It's just an observation. Seriously...don't take offense to that, I mean that with all good intention. :)

Ooo, good one Bigwig. I especially like the line about, "Odd, coming from a community of people that have trouble using voice." Excellent observation. Funny but oh, so true.

The shoe does fit for many in these forums so don't you worry none.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Most SL Role Playing seems to be bad acting

If you are lucky its bad acting for the sake of acting at least.

If not its bad acting for the sake of bragging about fake things which is worse.

I get the premise of trying to act out a character from Star Trek or Gor or whatever - but it seems people overdo it.

William Shatner is often criticized for his over-acting but he has nothing on the average Role-Player in SL.

----------------------------------

There is another sort of role-play that many really dislike - and that would be those weirdos who role-play a "character" even when they know those people they are getting to know aren't role playing at all.

For example when a 43 year old Married mother of three pretends to be a 19 year old single model from Seattle.

Or any of dozens of other scenarios.

Giving life to words..

Letty,

I found when I started to RP that the best thing to do was to be an observer and listen. Go to a number of different places a couple of times, and watch and listen. Some RP styles/genres will feel like a better fit for you than others. Some simply are more eloquent and better at emoting. Also by watching over a course of a few days, you'll get to see how things are run. Not all sims/RP sites are run well.

I've jumped before looking once and it was frustrating because once I invested my time and energy into a character, I wanted to keep it and not start over again in a different group. Now you can always keep your character and simply change groups, many do that but I suppose more than anything it's the interplay between characters that you lose when you change groups. The plot lines and story lines end midstream.

I also recommend using a notebook, virtual or handwritten, whichever works for you. I've found rp is essentially interactive creative writing and a thesaurus can come in very handy. If you over hear an RP that you feel is excellent, copy it to your notebook, review it later, and then write your own version, one that will suit your character. Now I'm not talking plagiarizing here, simply use the copied text as a starting point from which you create your own scenarios.

If you find you end up discussing a certain situation or item over and over, then draw up a list of ways to describe the action or item. If it's something as simple as hair color, list all the ways you can say black hair, ie. raven, ebony, midnight, etc.. Doing this broadens the vocabulary and you don't sound like you are constantly repeating yourself.

You can do this as well for action words. If your character has a specific style of movement, then list a number of verbs to describe it best, i.e. tiptoed, pranced, spirited, sashayed, etc.. You get the idea. I've always felt the whole idea was to create a picture, by first imagining the taste, feel, look, sound and even the smell of something then putting those images to words.

I probably have babbled on and given far more information than you were looking for. I hope some of it is helpful. I've not RPed in quite a while and I miss the creative energy and immersive quality of a good RP. Please let us all know here how your adventures turn out!

Enjoy,

Angel

Lady Sarah (squee!) and I went into a Medieval RP....certainly interesting, but so fun! My favorite qoute from her, "Ye olde vending machines. They had them even then" LOL! It was so pretty and relaxed...Colette mentioned bad acting...you had it on the ball! There was a certain character making me cringe! But all in good fun I suppose!! I am excited to see what else is in store, and visit other communities. I have said it before, but thank you again for all your help! I felt as prepared as I could be for a RP Noob. If you would like to join me on this lil adventure of mine, please feel free!! The more the merrier.

You surprise me, Colette, given that you often appear to support the individual's right to use SL in whatever way suits them. There's no way I'm giving up my notion of SL as primarily a role-playing environment - that's what my particular escapism is all about. In fact, it came as a shock to me that others DIDN'T see SL that way.

What you see is what you get - I wouldn't see representing myself as a sexy any-age of either gender as any less valid than my usual neko-ish persona. But then, I'm not here for the purpose of baring my soul to anyone either. I guess if we happen to meet inworld when I'm a chattering macaw but I'm supposed to be really 'me', you'd better just shoo me away ;)

I think she meant the people who use others as pawns in their game, pretending to be someone they aren't and involving the emotions and feeling of others, then manipulating people and hurting them deeply with their "role play". Not you.

Yes, I think so too Trout, and thank you for articulating that. I just get a teensy bit concerned that people who take SL very literally might interpret comments like Colette's equally literally and condemn all roleplaying out of hand. One only has to read other forum threads to see how many don't 'get' roleplaying in any way, shape or form - and there have been times when I've been asked persistently "but who are you REALLY?" :(

The rest of the time, I figure my acting must be so damn good they don't even realise... :D
