Profile Pic: 168 x 126 (Use 512x384 or 256x192 for upload) My Picks: 290 x 164 (Use 512x292 for upload) 1st Life Pic 135x135 (Use 256x256 or 128x128 for upload.)
It will be forced into a square in the preview, but it will show correctly once you place it in your profile window.

I did an image at 256x192 and it looks a little bit blurry. Any reason for this?

Sharper results might be obtained with higher (512x384) resolution, just because there's more picture information in those extra pixels when the image is resized down to 168x126--but the trade-off is greater Profile loading time. So one thing that may help if it's not already part of the process is to crop to 256x192 and resize to 256x256 in the graphics program before uploading. Programs like Photoshop and Gimp have several options for rescaling pictures, and one or another such option may introduce less blur or other artifacts than does the upload process left to its own devices.
Unfortunately, getting the very best possible results is a bit trial-and-error, though, because the viewer's method of scaling down to 168x126 may amplify the particular artifacts introduced by the graphics program's rescaling operation. And that's partially a function of the image content, so I don't think it's possible to specify which rescaling option will always work best.

From: Arianny Bartavelle I did an image at 256x192 and it looks a little bit blurry. Any reason for this? Hm, did you save as jpg? If so, that may be your problem. Try saving as tga or png. Those file types tend to be a lot sharper than jpg.

I get good results with the following procedure:
1. Take pic at full resolution, save to disk 2. Open in Photoshop. Crop an area of the picture at the desired final aspect ratio. For a Profile pic in the "Second Life" tab (front page), that's 4:3. 3. Do any other manipulations (levels, blur, lighting effects, etc.) 4. Resize the image as 256x256 or 512x512. Be sure to uncheck "constrain proportions". The image will look squished, but will look fine in the final application. 5. Save as a .PNG file 6. Upload image to SL, drop in Profile.
I just updated my profile pic last weekend using this method. See what you think.
