Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew the dimensions for a profile picture. I tried to put in a 512 x 512 graphic and it stretched pretty badly.

It's generally 4 times as long as it is tall, i.e. try using a 1024 x 768 (WxH) pic, or along those same dimensions.

It's pretty much a 4:3 ratio. When you capture it to your computer and upload it, SL will redo the image to a square ratio (like 512x512, etc.) which will look squished when viewed in an image view window, but SL will stretch it back out to the original dimensional ratio when applied to the profile window.
Note that the 2nd Life tab picture differs in that it is square (1:1 ratio), however.
That's also why all that squishing and stretching makes even the best uploaded image look a bit fuzzy on your 1st Life tab.

I came across this problem and did screen shots and then measured the exact pixels to get the size. Because of the size and format restrictions imposed by the SL system, I have found it best to scale the longest dimension to one of the multiples (512, 256, 12 and keep the aspect ratio the same. When uploaded, these look distorted when viewed in textures, but just fine with no distortion when used in your actual profile. Here are the sizes: Profile Pic: 168 x 126 (Use 512x384 or 256x192 for upload) My Picks: 290 x 164 (Use 512x292 for upload) 1st Life Pic 135x135 (Use 256x256 or 128x128 for upload.) Of course, you have to Snapshot to Disk, then edit the picture in a graphic program to crop and scale it to the correct size.

Good info, Torian. Also, I realized after I got in-world last night and was working with my Profile that I had the square vs. rectangular ratios reversed in my last post. The 2nd Life tab is 4:3, the 1st Life tab is 1:1.
