/me reads the post, re-reads the post, and again re-reads the post
Is there actually a question in there somewhere that I missed or is this just one of those "here is my opinion / advice" threads? _____________________

Darn it - there I go again jumping in and not RTFM... If I were looking for an answer 'Residents Answers' is where I would look. I was giving my answer, for what it is worth, to a recurring question. If it belongs elsewhere - please feel free to move or remove it. Rime ![]() It really was pretty mean of LL to call this Resident Answers but then to expect Questions. ![]() _____________________

'Security Orb' - seemingly reviled by all because of poor abilities, configuration mistakes or deliberate griefing. The problem: "I want to stop people from wandering into my home but I don't want to overly restrict their ability to cross my land on foot or in some kind of flying machine." The solutions: 1 - Uncheck "Allow public access" on the "Access" tab of the "About Land" dialog. For: Free, simple Against: Anti-social, ugly Result: Hideous ban lines, which *you* can't see, that reach up to over 100 m and are invisible to others until they walk, run or fly into them. Your neighbours will hate you and likely ban you from their land in retaliation. Most estates...atleast the ones ive rented on... you cannot turn off public access you are required to keep it checked |

Copybot Security Without The Grief
The problem: "I want to stop people from copying those prim bloomers that I have for sale and which took me literally hours to create." The solutions: 1 - Delete everything. Very effective but has the problem that nobody can then buy any prim bloomers. Likely to reduce sales. 2 - Cheap copybot preventer, shouts "!quit" repeatedly. 3 - Expensive copybot preventer, shouts "!quit" but also changes its name so that annoyed passers-by have trouble muting it. (Obviously these are the only possible options.) Things to remember: None of these work, apart from the "deleting everything" option, and nobody is going to steal your prim bloomers anyway. _____________________

Welll..... Are they silk? What kind of patten? Oh, and what color are they? Sear's catalog, circa 1940. EDIT: Ooops I forgot. Steampunk so I guess that would mean: Sear's catalog, circa 1940 with integral Vulcan chastity device. _____________________

Copybot Security Without The Grief 2 - Cheap copybot preventer, shouts "!quit" repeatedly. 3 - Expensive copybot preventer, shouts "!quit" but also changes its name so that annoyed passers-by have trouble muting it. From what I've read about Copybot, !quit never worked against it for more than a few hours anyway as it was patched almost immeadiately. |

or buy a dog in world Forget the dog. Buy a REAL defense animal. I've seen two that look good...the Attack Shark (yes, it will attack over land as well as in the water) and a Guard Dragon. Oh, and a third...a swarm of Killer Bees. All can provide hours of innocent amusement. @ Rime: I don't care if your post didn't have a question...it ought to be a sticky. Very informative. _____________________

Option 42: Set up boobytraps that don't trigger until strangers actually DO something like sitting on your sexbed. Then WarpMove them to the nearest telehub while emitting bouncing "Don't Panic" particles. It's not like people visiting your land can hurt anything, so they must be volunteering to be your cat toy.
Option 23: It's not like people visiting your land can hurt anything, so quit being such a Grayface and ask yourself "What Would Eris Do?". _____________________

Thanks Rime, I liked reading these solutions and yeah this question does come up here periodically. I've never *YET* needed security protection for my mainland parcels. On my estate parcels, I have, on occasion, used a security orb, when my Bloodlines neighbors got too interested in me for awhile there. The security orb has always worked great, and does give the option of whether to kick a person or not, if you are inworld you get a message telling you that so and so is on your property, kick them or add them? So that's nice. It doesn't spam you if you are not inworld though, and that's nice too.......I'm afraid I don't know anything about what a bounding box does, although the security orb also sets what boundary you choose, and doesn't infringe on neighbors, it does recognize your property lines, no matter how big you may accidentally set the boundary.. so I have to say that within my (admittedly limited!) experience, I like the security orb.
Since we've had the discussions here about flying vehicles, and access, I"ve been more sensitive about security issues especially on my mainland parcels, and will not use anything unless I'm being directly attacked or something and even then, would try everything else before throwing up a red access ban line. 2 - Cheap Security Orb For: Almost free Against: May be difficult to configure. Employs a simple sphere of influence centered on the device which might not respect your property boundary. Result: Unless configured with care may harass your neighbours earning you an Abuse report. You may have aircraft fall on your house from unseated fliers. 3 - Less Inexpensive Security Orb For: Still relatively cheap, may respect property boundary Against: May just be a cheap security orb with prettier packaging and a more expensive price tag. Sphere of influence centered on device. Sphere of influence still extends outside of your home possibly affecting fliers or wanderers. Result: Less likely to get you an AR but won't make any friends with fliers. 4 - Modern Security Device For: Ability to configure a bounding box of influence rather than a sphere. The bounding box is independent of device location. Influences ONLY the area you designate which can be wholly contained within the walls of your home. Against: Can be expensive (but do the math for real world cost) requires a little more thought to configure. Result: As good as it gets privacy in your own home without affecting the freedom of others to enjoy your wonderful gardens or float over your beautiful home in their balloon. Things to remember: None of these solutions will prevent someone from spying on your activities through extended cam navigation. Land access restrictions offer NO protection for your skyhome. Don't inflict hideous ban lines on your ground based neighbours while you live unprotected up in the sky. First line of defense against troublemakers are land controls: Uncheck Edit terrain, Create Object and Object Entry for all residents; Check Safe (no damage) and No pushing options all found on the Options tab of the About land dialog. Get a friend, or use an Alt (alternate) account, to test the effects of your security measures. Don't do unto others what you not have done to you. In conclusion: Though all of the solutions are legitimate (when properly used) only the more modern security devices give the ability to restrict to a specific zone. When configured to protect an area wholly contained within a structure they will never affect another residents ability to enjoy the freedoms afforded by Second Life. In my experience: Yes - I have inflicted each of these options on other residents - though option 4 has only caught out people who had no right being where they were. Please - skip the learning curve and go directly to option 4. You will get what you want and everyone, except the ne'er do wells, will be happy. Thank you, Rime |

I have one from PDS. I think that is the name of it. Never once had a problem with it. I have a 30 second warning on it and IMHO that is ample time to scoot. It does not affect others access to our sim unless they are within the perimeters setting of the orb, which I believe is 96m. Very easy to set up and you receive updates. Great system for about 500L.

Solution 5: stop caring about the 'security' of your place. It's not likely that anybody can actually take or damage any of your stuff so, really, why bother? Enable a 10 minute autoreturn and just eject/ban anybody that won't leave peacefully when you're home.
The amount of attention griefers will give you is inversely proportional to the amount of work you spend trying to keep them out. That said, I like the sharks idea, too. _____________________

The amount of attention griefers will give you is inversely proportional to the amount of work you spend trying to keep them out. That said, I like the sharks idea, too. The only reason I have a security system is so that when somebody tries to enter my home while I'm there (and perhaps discussing - or doing - something I wouldn't want the whole world to know about) it will give save me from having to say "Hey, you! This is my house! GTF out of here!" and manually ejecting them. What happens when I'm not there, I guess, really doesn't matter too much. I just like the idea of privacy more than anything else. But yeah, it's mainly for when I am there. |
