Update -

Just thought I would let you all know that a wonderful person (Thank you!) pointed me in the direction of a very generous person who rents small cottages fo 30 days to newbies. He set me up and gave me some great notecards full of informative places and free stuff shops. I don't know if he wants his name posted here - but im me if you are interested and I can check with him.

I have already moved in and am learning all about how prims go fast! I have expensive taste so far - better curb that soon or I'll have to buy a whole region! Anyway - great way to learn the ins and outs of setting up a cozy home.

Thanks again for all of your input!

Chariclo, buying a REGION means u must be a millionare lol

Welcome to forums, but set your sites in learning the "Good the bad and the ugly", theres good knowledge bases in SL official website that tells u the pitfalls, of renting or buying land.

Im glad u rented a place, this is by far the best way to get learning about the workings of SL,
because, as u say , u can learn about prims, also u should put in a search for low prim stuff, such as furniture and hot tubs, my first and my second better glass house type of rental apartment I rented was from Cristalle, I found, and still have 10 low prim places i still use.

I furnished one of crystals glass buildings with a "muse hot tub" amazing tub with menus, steam, and poses, although it was fairly expensive, the prims were very low, and after I bought a few couches and bit and bobs, I still had a few in reserve!

The other good thing about having your own pad for a while is that, whatever u buy, u can unpack and try/wear etc...learn how to make a few things, put up a board and play with textures, uplaod a phot or two, make your own pics.....as u say, so many options, but as folk are saying, this isnt the Sims, its about real life risk taking with your real money, so just look around, make some friends and contacts. etc...

Just be very careful buying land.....even my associate who is skilled in estate mangement, had a her land sold under her feet, buy a supposingly trusted land owner....try and get recommendations from other people, perhaps visit a sim u may want to start your own little house on, and visit other residents, and politley ask them, if the land owner is 100% reliable, and so on....

Rhaorth Antonelli is a trusted and a good mentor for anybody in need of some help:)
She certainly sorted out a problem with my group some weeks ago, and is a very nice person :))

Anyway best of luck m8 take care

Definitely. Start small and rent until you figure out what really appeals to you. I know there is that impulse to immediately immerse yourself in EVERYTHING, but it's better to get past the honeymoon phase before you commit to something like buying an island or region.

I defo agree with Ann... rent until further down the track. When you are fully immersed in SL it can feel very important to purchase big..eg a whole sim. But when the dollars in RL suddenly kick in (eg alot of extra prims added to the initial price) it can really bite..especially if u like to shop. Unless u are cashed up in RL the price of living it up in SL can hit hard after a short while (speaking from experience here, lol! )Where are all the people? Me being a Aussie guess most are asleep? do not know what time zone u are in? I dont mind a quiet SL tho personally..gives me space!

Absolutely not! LOL
However my sl personality seems to think so since everything she picks out is chock full of a gazillion prims! I am learning quickly how it can get out of hand.

I am enjoying the little cottage I am renting right now - but with 117 prims it's kinda cramping my style. :)

I've been visiting as many for sale and for rent properties as possible to get a real feel for what is out there and how things are being priced. Several properties for sale I have looked at are 512/1084 of people who have been in SL less than 2 months. Thats pretty telling I think.

This weekend I am going to take as many tutorials as possible. I am really interested in creating something of my own. I love a challenge.

I am definatly taking it slow. I think when I am done shopping for everything that I think I need, lol, calculating prims and building a modest home I should have a feel for how much land might be needed - I then can figure it into my rl budget and accomodate myself accordingly.

With the gas prices out of control - I'm not really going anywhere in rl anyway. My entertainment budget might just be better spent in SL! LOL!

I won't advise, but I'll mention some 'user tragectories' that I have seen...

1. The Accidental Avatar
...drifts into SL, checks it out, never really owns anything, sporadically pops in.

2. The Enthusiast
...is fascinated, enthused, gets a tiny parcel, GOES CRAZY, has waaaaay too much land, gets overwhelmed, second life eats more hours than first, burns out, settles back to about 4000m of land somewhere and grouses on forums. Oh, this all happens in 90ish days. Net loss: over 1000 USD.

3. The Casually Addicted
...typically thinks they aren't into it that much, gets land, makes a shop, never takes anything too seriously, hangs out with friends. This low key fun is like a barbed hook, however. Progressively they get better known, their shop starts to support land, next thing they know they have an entire region or two and are a pillar of the community. Oops.

4. The Secret Dark Force that will PWN you all
...logs in to get the 'angle' on everything, tries to monetise every obscure niche and squeeze maximum advantage - wants to 'harvest' the grid for cash. Usually ends up getting a 'business in a box' or entering really crappy distributive marketing deals. Gets absolutely nowhere. Is eventually ripped off himself by a scammer posing as an 'investment bank'.

5. Soap Opera
...is here because of friends or romantic interest; land and 'stuff' and the economy is all sort of peripheral, but the significant SL other made a nice house for them, &c &c - they aren't rich but comfy enough in SL style. Time goes on, friends and lovers come and go, occasional bouts of drama on a cycle from about three to nine months. Typically on 4000-8000m of land somewhere; generally stable nice looking address.

6. Arteest
...might have land, might not, might even be invited onto someone else's land for all the cool things made. Not into sales, but has made some incredibly wonderful things and people keep saying: sell your stuff! Never gets around to it.

7. Sandbox Warrior

...like the Terminator, he landed in our time with a purpose. But his is to bring Order and Justice to the wild grid. Locked and loaded, his keen eye scans the horizon with a variety of tools at his disposal to deal with griefers and troublemakers. Often has a sidekick or small band. Incidentally, he knows the most dreaded archgriefers in first life - who as it happens first told him about SL during recess.

These are just a few. I hope this post is informative when it comes to monetary choices - for some, it may save them a lot :)

LOL, Des! Thank you for helping me to understand myself better :-)

On a 512sq m plot of land (the smallest size) you will always get a 117 prim allowance :) If you need/want more prims then you'll have to look at renting/buying a larger plot eventually.

Since you're premium, as somebody mentioned, you can buy a 512sqm plot of land and not need to pay tier. I didn't realise when I first joined SL that land owners still need to pay a weekly amount in tier to Linden Lab or the sim/estate owner (if it's privately-owned land) after purchasing... sort of how we pay maintenance fees for condos in RL.

There are several low-prim furniture stores in SL that create good-quality, well-designed furniture with very few prims. I don't know of any specific ones (I never finished decorating my house lol) but I'm sure the other forum members would be able to offer suggestions on this one!
