The missing image 'replaced' the perm gray square that we used to have. No, not the 'still loading.. maybe.. eventual,' but the, 'oh, damn, the asset server ate the texture,' gray square.
We were getting tired of being able to tell which kind of gray square it was, see?
Yeah, I miss Ruth.. but my aim is improving! (Someone had to say it!)

Personally I thank the powers that be that Ruth is gone! Of all the little things in SL that drive me crazy nothing was worse for me than RUTH! The cloud is SO much better than that ugly female avatar with noob hair sticking through prim hair. Ugh! I have to admit I was REALLY surprised at all of the people in this thread that want that atrocious thing back. Everyone in my circle of friends is so happy about the cloud. Just goes to show, different strokes for different folks.  FaTeke P.S. I can still remember the first time I rezzed as a Ruth, I hid behind a building in a dark ally for hours waiting for my avatar to get over his gender identity crisis. It wasn't until about 2 months later that I first heard the term Ruthed and I laughed and laughed. That's one thing that ugly little girl gave me anyway; a fond memory.

I still use an older client, so I still see all of you as Ruth when SL does not want to rez you. I haven't logged in with the newer clients much, so I have not yet seen the cloud. I like Ruth - she definitely says "SL is Borked" unlike any cloud possibly could.

Ruth is sort of the Eve of Second Life, she's the female AV that we're all based on. Perhaps we should worship her as our primeval Goddess?
As for the shiny cloud effect, it's from Neal Stephenson's cyberpunk novel Snow Crash.The entire vision of the grid and the Metaverse was based on Snow Crash. Stephenson imagined an un-rezzed avatar as a cloud. So in actuality, the cloud is a more accurate representation then Ruth was.
