Reading these VAT threads make me realize why I slept through economics classes.

If anything, most of the EU should be paying US sellers *more* out of gratitude for the fact that they're not speaking German today. :P
Or 33.3% less because you entered the war two years late?

This isn't going to end well, is it? :(

Don't forget how we kept the Russians out of Western Europe for 45 years.

Are you sure about that? Here, the minimum hourly rate is a lot higher than in the US.

At it's highest in Washington (which is more than double that of some states), it is: $7.93, which is roughly £3.88.

Here in the UK it's £5.52, which is roughly $11.26 dollars.

I'd have thought that would translate into a higher average wage for UK workers.

It must surely depend on buying power. Can you buy more for US$7.93 in Washington, than I can get for UK£3.88 in London? (My lunch of sandwich and yoghurt in London just cost me £4.05.)

Or misuse, as the case may be. :-/

(No, this isn't going to end well.)

Back to OP - that's a kind thought, but no - wouldn't work, I'm afraid.

I had this nightmare last night where I was expected to charge VAT to EU SL-ers and I was adding 17.5% to 25L$ pose balls. :,(

Yes except we're poor students of it, as Niall Ferguson points out. You can be an Empire and accept it, and just be imperialists, or you can be an Empire-in-Denial, like the USA is, and do a cocked up half-assed job at it. It's like the worst of all worlds, really.

Nah, just ridicule it like we are doing, it's more fun and less stressful.

Would any other users be able and prepared to offer EU users a discount on in-world products to cancel out the VAT they paid on buying their L$?

I know it'll reduce sales income which is never a popular thing, but it might help given the pain they've all suffered on tier fees..

I cant really wrap my head around this.

The people of these countries passed these VAT laws. Not us.

Do I wish they werent taxed so heavily? yes.
Do I wish the tax didnt apply? yes
Do I wish LL never opened up a branch in the EU so they could avoid all this? yes
Do I wish that Linden Labs had given the correct amount of notice? Of course.

Do I think people from non-EU countries should SUBSIDIZE the Euros' entertainment and SL business expenses? NO , NO, NO , NO ... oh yeah NO.

I can agree the VAT is totally rotten. But why should *I* have to pay any part of a European's tax liability?

Agree with you there Colette. I think most people either are consolodating or are paying up, depending on load. I've said elsewhere, the cost of my VAT a month is about what I might spend one day on lunch. If I am being stingy.

At the risk of being pendantic, yes. When you consider Hitler had pretty much given up on Great Britain, after getting spanked by the RAF, long before we physically entered the War. That post is just an ignorant troll or or a poor attempt at humor.

Not to mention totally historically inaccurate. The US did not do more to stop Nazi Germany than the UK.

If she wanted to draw that pararallel players in Russia should be getting HUGE discounts.

whoooaaaaaaa..... I have a resident question?

Why does it seem that quite a few threads recently have degraded into nationalist debate? What does that have to do with anything? Enough to send anyone with a legitimate question running for the nearest crashed sim.
Can´t we play nice or throw pie?

lol to be fair some of these VAT threads could stand being Godwined.

I mean 2-4 should be enough.

Theres more VAT threads than there were ever concurrent Ageplay threads. Or even gambling.

I think the issue is for people for whom it makes the difference between making tier or not.

They can't simply raise their prices, because they'll become uncompetitive compared to US users who don't have to pay VAT. And they can't simply "sell more" because, well, if they could just decide to do that then they'd have already done it. :)

You are right.

Their Tax Laws make them uncompetitive.

It actually happens everywhere. In my CIty many businesses have moved to the suburbs becuase the City Taxes are too high.
