Alright, I'm looking for some stuff now. My money situation is extremely tight, so I'm hoping some new RAM might do the trick. Thank you, everyone.

I don't think I need to update my RAM or discontinue any of the programs I had running when I first got SL. The problem is ONLY in SL. I can have about 20 things going off at the same time and not experience anything.

Right, but what we're saying is that SL is a memory HOG. If I run a process manager right now, I can see that SL is using 168,649 KB, and Firefox at the next highest is only running 80,619 KB. If you add SL to all your other processes, it's going to seriously slow down your computer.

Wireless connections have been problems for a lot of people. What happens if you connect your computer DIRECTLY to your modem/router?

How long has this been a problem? Second Life has been having serious lag issues recently.

I haven't done that yet. I'm in a set-up where it's most convenient to have wireless, but I'll find a way to get to an individual modem.

This problem has been pretty recent, really. Started a little while ago, almost like when I changed my settings to "low," it messed things up.

When I installed the GreenLife Viewer without the SL Voice and sound components it ran smoothly. When I added the SL Voice and sound it went back to bandwidth hell. Hopefully someone with a pocket protector at the Lab can fix this soon.

Actually, I downloaded EmeraldLife to see if it was just a client issue. Happened there, too.

I'm somewhat amazed that SL will run for any period of time on a computer with only 1GB of RAM. Eventually the system will be using so much swap (VRAM) that surely, the symptoms described will kick in. I would consider 2GB RAM a minimum for running SL, 4GB to run SL in parallel with other applications (i.e. Firefox), or more to optimize your experience. (^_^)

Personally... I went for broke. My computer has 8GB. No lag on me! =^-^=

Interesting. Well, when I get the time/money, I'll go for the gusto and grab some RAM.

What OS do you use that recognizes that much RAM? That might be important for the OP to know before investing in more chips.

In the meantime, learn how to shut down unnecessary processes and programs in order to give SL more memory.
