Does anybody know what's going on with this? When I use Second Life, in the place of my avatar, there's a giant black nothingness (but actually, with hair and shoes). If I go into the appearance changing preferences, in the boxes that look to me like they are supposed to show previews of my avatar if I tweak that setting, there's also just a black square. I see other people's avatars, for the most part (although I think a few are black holes also). If I take my clothes off and put them back on, it doesn't change. It also stays that way pretty much as long as I stay in SL (I thought at first it might just be loading but I waited about an hour or a bit more and exited and relaunched it a couple of times). It also isn't affected by turning on or off avatar impostors, dragging the graphics slider anywhere across its performance range, or altering the avatar mesh detail anywhere across its range. There's a reduced-size screen shot of this available here: I'm using a MacBook Pro 15" with a 2.0 GHz Core Duo CPU and an ATI Radeon X1600 with 128MB of VRAM.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I love that effect so much I made a skin for when SL isn't broken.

Been happening to me, too.
I can't get a new video card just now - am gonna get a new mac instead. Yes another mac. I have Photoshop and can't afford to buy a new Photoshop for PC so I can get CS4. Cheaper to upgrade for a Mac.
Btw any tips on which specs to get for Mac for SL (think - max, above and beyond) are welcome. (iMac probably)

I had the same problem on a MacBook Pro (notebook). If you are using an external monitor and are running SL on it, move it back to the notebook's display and it will be ok. You can still use your external display - just start SL on the notebook's display and move it over once it is running. It's a pain, but worth it - SL looks great on my 24" monitor
