What do people use to inspect other people (besides their profile)? I saw a reference to an inspection shield today. Can you tell things like where they bought their clothes? Or something..?

Right click a worn object, more, inspect.

These "inspection shields" are yet another attempt to thwart copybots that don't really work and simply annoy other residents. :-)

when I see anyone wearing something I like (hair or cloth or even an objct) I often inspect the prims so I know who was the creator and to put on my wish list :)

They're also used by stuck-up fashionistas who don't want to tell anyone where they bought those gorgeous shoes. They want to preserve their unique look.

I've never understood this mindset. If someone admires my outfit, I'll go digging through my inventory and landmarks to tell them who made it and how to get their own copy.

Well, the problem is that you're cool. It's something a lot of other people are missing, sadly.

I got my cam caught on someone the other day, and sure enough, she was wearing a shield. nothing on her looked all that grande, but I cammed inside the shield and inspected her boots to see they had herself as creator. They weren't so ugly she should be ashamed of making them.. So I suspected they were copybotted.

Is there a way to inspect non-attachments? Such as clothing or facelight or something? I didn't find a way so I assume there isn't.

Facelights are attachments. Use show transparent to see it, then you can inspect it.

For non-prim clothes, I guess you have to ask.

You're information is good, too. I've learned a lot from you I wouldn't otherwise know.

I think the "shields" are more likely to convince people that the wearer IS a copybot thief, than they are to protect anyone. Sort of like the argument on Radar Detectors in cars. "If you aren't planning on exceeding the speed limit, why do you care if the Police have a radar trap ahead?"

Yeah, that.

I rarely see something worn by an avatar and think "I want that." It is more often, "I wonder what else the creator has."

Same here.

And going on a shopping trip with a potential new friend is a -lot- of fun. :)

It tends to be that the better looking people in SL are more willing to share info, landmarks, and chat about it all, and the ones that look like they're wearing poorly made junk but for an item or two tend to be less chatty...
- Probably because being chatty goes a long way towards finding the best loot.

If the stuff is the result of copybot, what would an inspection show that an inspection shield hides?

How do you "show invisible" to see a facelight?

CTRL-ALT-T. Or Highlight Transparent under the view menu. Command-Option-T on the Mac.

The inspection would show someone as the object's creator. If you know your SL merchandise, you can often say, "that looks just like a pair of Bax Cohen boots...but the creator is Lindal Kidd. Hmmm..."

CTRL+ALT+T will show transparent objects.

TY. How do I turn off "show transparent"?

I see now that I know how to inspect that hair I was given for free that most likely the hair is not kosher. I will delete the hair and buy a legitimate copy.

Yeah, I don't understand the secrecy about where you get stuff. If there is someone in SL that does great things, then it only makes sense to me that we should support them by getting as many people to go to their store and buy their stuff. That keeps them in business and encourges them to make more stuff that we can buy to make our Second Lives that little bit more awesomer ;)

and if you know how a copybot recreates stuff you'll think like "hmm the 256 prims in this hair have all been created at exactly the same moment, how likely is that..."

For many people SL is a dressing-up game. And you can't win that if you tell everyone where you got your stuff from.

Ah.. but the best way to win is to take the same outfit they have, and make it look even better! :)
