The Particle Laboratory is a status symbol? =) *blush*
To me, the most impressive status symbol anyone can have is what they bring with them from outside: their brain! =)
Xylor Baysklef is a virtuoso in LSL, his works have left me completely in awe. His XyText boards, XyObject (a massive object editor) and his games could have been brute forced by any clever coder, but his code is elegant, efficient and makes things possible that would have been to slow and laggy, if created by someone with with a heavier hand.
If the ability to pull off stuff like that isn't a status symbol... it should be. =)

I have two items for sale in my gallery that have to be considered for the title of most expensive.
The first, Conspicusous Consumption, is modestly priced at only $20,000 but you see, it is 1,000 prims used completely wastefully and extravagently. Money means nothing in SL, prims mean everything.
And trust me, I can build an 8,000 prim version if you want. You just gotta have the land to hold it.
The second one is an anti-war protest piece. It will only cost you $0. But you see, you heirs will get it. It is called The Price of Oil and to get it, you must die.

You also forgot that most people that are rich in NY don't show it at all either, and are cheap. That's the most common type.

Most expensive status symbol?
08-23-2007 18:39
Well for something to be a status symbol, ownership of it must either change or display your status.
There is only one real status symbol of note in SL in that case;
A sim.
It can be made to pay for itself if you're clever, but still technically the most expensive status symbol in SL.

You don't get to be rich by spending money and being flash. You get to be rich by being frugal and using money wisely. People who throw their money around are often not that rich because they throw their money around.

From: Brenda Connolly Uhm, we have a winner. Or maybe a continent. If I won the lottery I would buy a 100-sim island and build a whole city with 40 sims set aside to be a National Park. I'd call it either Elbonia (one for the Dilbert fans out there) or Cartel Island. If it happens, you're all welcome to come live on Elbonia with me, so long as you acknowledge me your King and do my bidding.

What I would find amazing is some one who can create brilliant and creative things with their brains. There are lot of very talented, gifted scripters, builders, texture artist those deserve true status in my book. If my brain could ever produce and comprehend even 50 percent of what the most gifted minds in SL I would be proud of myself. But status is really nothing if you're friendless, unhappy and miserable in my book

I personally do not see any kind of status symbols in SL
I base it on the personality behind the avatar as to if they are worthy of any kind of "status"
that status can be both bad or good heh
