I vote for a newer avatar mesh. This one.. well, it needs an overhaul and preferably by a graphic artist in the 3-D field and not some tech. I add this to the wish for a neck attachment point, which should come with the new mesh.

I agree there needs to be a newer AV mesh...and wholeheartedly agree with the need for a neck attachment point, as well as a tummy (above pelvis/spine) and an additional spine position.

There already is a stomach attachment point. I have two tails, one which attaches at the stomach, and the other at the pelvis, so prim skirts don't cause a problem.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Is making a new mesh the sort of thing that would render all existing skins and clothes worthless because they are designed for a different mesh?

If we get a new mesh and can still use the old mesh, wouldn't that mean the guys doing the lighting and shading programming would have to write code that makes two different meshes look good?

This is why getting a decent mesh sooner is more desirable than later. As a clothes designer I think it would be good if we could go to a system where my old clothes could still be used. But if I had to start building my inventory from scratch again it would be worth it to have skirts that move with the legs, textures that don't smear around the groin etc. etc.
In fact if a competitor world opened up with good looking avatar meshes I'd probably defect.

New AV mesh! (corners, flat spots, ears, hands, feet, crotch, etc..)
New UV map with more symmetrical scaling and matched at the mesh joints.
More attachment points (better yet.. 20 user-definable locations!)
Better simulation of weight gain/overweight (slider adjustment behaviour)
Better walks and animations.

but since this is LL we're talking about...
Some new clothes, flip flops, and maybe a new skin.

Breast attachment points. (Pecs actually move with the "stomach" part of the avatar, between ribcage and pelvis)

I went for a new skin the first time I realized how yellow I was. But then I wanted a realistic chest shape, and noticed that Ruth's breasts start at the clavicle. What's that about? How can you get a decent decolletage with a lumpy chest? So I got a new shape.

It's still not quite right, but I can work with it and not feel like I'm deformed.

My alt is black, and it's impossible to make him look like anything other than a very dark white guy. Frustrating. His forehead is too flat, his mouth has the wrong proportions, and the nose is completely wrong.

I want Godiva. I've got Ovaltine.

So I think accommodation for other races would be very important.

I'd like to know if the Caucasian default is off-putting to those who are from other races. Anyone?

Yeah I guess a few people could be put off by the default AV's or the limited selection too compared to other online games, make them work a little when creating an AV and they might stick round a little longer :)

I know the amount of time I've put in tweaking things has made me like both AVs more. But the slider system doesn't allow for fine control of certain features, and that's very frustrating.

So I think we need better tools for more variety.

If they were to change the avatar mesh, wouldn't that essentially run the risk of "breaking" all the clothing that is around today?

It would be worth it.

I think that it would.

And my whole "SLiving" depends on the current Avatar Mesh.

It would have done a lot more for the look of SL than windlight is.

Hmmm... the ironic thing is, if I were a "content creator of high caliber," (which I assume to mean a skin creator) I'd be motivated for the default avatar to look as cheesy as possible.

Got to agree. It's far too easy "out of the box" these days ... don't see anyone born looking like a gibbon like I did!

Sort of takes the fun out of it for me, having it so easy.

This also I agree with. How I wish I could change my ear position! And also make my shoulders less broad without making myself look anorexic. And have SOME muscle tone without looking like Geoff Capes. Etc.

Never happy, am I? lol

The male av would look like Chris, or Yosef.

Lindal, could the women of SL really handle more than one me?

I soooo agree with this. Windlight is pretty and all, but a better avatar mesh would make a lot of residents very happy avies, I think. I would just adore it if my hair didn't go through my body everytime I move. It can really make photos look offputting sometimes. I hate having to wait until my hair is properly positioned before I can snap a pic. Same with having to move my skirts around so that a leg isn't showing through where it's not supposed to. Then having to move it back when I'm finished "posing".

(Or, at least...I'm assuming that's a mesh problem. I'm not technical enough to know for sure)

Can you imagine the chorus of complaints coming from the designers who would have to re-do ALL of their product line?

Do you implement it grid-wide (all avatars get the new mesh) or do you create a two-class society - one with the old mesh, one with the new mesh? "I'm sorry, but your avatar isn't compatible with my clothes"

What a boost to the SL economy if we have to go out an try to buy all of our clothes all over again. I can't imagine a designer putting in all the work on redoing something and then offering it for free.....

I can see the benefits, but I can already hear the complaints....

It seems as if it would be possible to let everyone go back and forth between the old and the new at will so that old clothes would all still be good and new, much better, clothes would also be possible.
But if that would take up too many resources, as a clothing designer I'd choose to start all over again with a decent mesh even though my current inventory would suddenly be worthless. I'd rather be making better clothes than is possible now.
The change wouldn't be all bad for business any way; probably a lot of people would buy more more new clothes for a while.

It is possible to update the mesh, but keep the same UV Mapping. When Daz3D introduced Victoria 3, they had a model of it that retained the Victoria 2 UV Mapping, so clothes were compatible. Of course over time, everyone migrated to the V3 UVs, because they were so much better. I think updating the mesh, but having a toggle between the 'old' and 'new' UV mapping would be the way to go, or something to that effect.

But the UV mapping on the current SL mesh is AWFUL!

No argument here :) But it would keep people from losing their current investment in clothes. Make it legacy, only works for existing clothes, new uploads have to be the new UV.
