LL pulling the plug on selling Linden Dollars?

OK, assuming cashing out L$ to US$ is ended one way to avert total meltdown would be to allow people to pay tier / land rental and premium account subscription fees in L$. At least that would put the existing wealth / value tied up in L$ to some use as well as giving people an incentive to use L$ as a medium of exchange.

but i wouldnt mind, just make tier free, or payable in the linden $...which would still give people with sims or islands or bsuinesses reason to promote and have businesses, and elminate a lot of the "stealing" and cheating...if people arent going to real world profit from it the lure of profiting from copied or stolen articles would be lessened considerably, also the land grabbers would find their profits (which would now be only in world currency) wouldnt be worth the hassle of camping new/available land like it has been in the past. ad farms may not have the draw they do now...it could solve a lot of issues people complain about all the time.

i dont know...maybe i am just not interested in SL for profit...i am only here for the social interaction, which seems to be becoming more and more limited due to the financial concerns, not that i have any interest in age play or really much in gambling, though it was a fun diversion here and there, and i never did it much (the gambling that is)
so i dont have any problem with not being able to "cash out" lindens.


. Linden Lab could change to pay to play like other mmorpg type games, and of course charge advertising dollars to all the corporations with in world presence...

there are many non-doomsday scenarios which could occur if this rumor were true. you have to take it all with a grain of salt, and remember that every little change is " the end of SL!"

i'd just quit and go play an RPG that doesn't have all the BS and glitchy crap we have to deal with on a REGULAR basis. $ is the onyl thing that keeps me in... even tho i have yet to see a profit from ANYTHING... LOL

I heard a rumor that they're going to totally get rid of L$ in SL 2.0.. They're going to be using M$ instead.

I'm making assumptions based on your join date, but you do know that a vast majority of successful (not even counting the failed ones) businesses in the real world make a loss in their first two years, right? Is there any reason it should be different in SL?



Well, if they could switch to M$-SQL, too, that might not be a bad thing.

Commerce won't be eliminated, but instead of $USD you will receive REAL Linden Dollars in the mail, with pictures of various Lindens and selected residents on them. These will be redeemable for all sorts of nifty prizes from the New ESC created LaughingatYou Linden Mall.

well, wut i mean is...... the only true friends in have in SL are people i know from RW that got me involved, and now they've kind of backed off. a nice twist is that i've met a few new people that i like very much, and actually have in my freinds list. you know who you are. too bad we can never be on at the same time to have some fun.

but anyway....

if they start charging $L to chat and then remove the possiblity to cash out L$ into US$ then i can't imagine what would keep me here. i could never get the US$ i spent on my land back, and i would not be able to communicate with anyone inworld. WHAT would be the point?

i'd just quit and go play SWG or Runescape or WoW ... or nothing and work in my garden.

Ahh just someone I know - not a friend really (might need to feel special, haha) - passed the info on in passing, insisting it was true. You're probably right about the Chinese whispers thing too, and the whole secret affilations with the Lindens thing. But sometimes, just sometimes, there's no smoke without fire, and I've seen other companies do similar things with online games, and come up with some insane idea that totally destroys the game they created.

So something like this wouldn't be totally surprising. But yep, I agree with many people here that it would ruin SL, on the offchance that it did actually happen.

The blog update said that they could accept payment for tier in L$ if they wanted to.

I heard this rumour about 5 minutes ago, that Linden labs are supposedly entertaining the idea of selling out to MicroSoft. And that instead of ruthed we'll end up 'clippied' once the default avatar gets changed to an annoying paperclip.

I'm taking both this and Meade's rumor into consideration for the Ungrounded Rumors Day contest. Meade's was very good, but would have been funnier if she had substituted WoW gold for $M. She would have instantly won flat out, hands down if she had said BoDog T$, knowing my predilection for illicit online poker and given the recent gambling controversy.

I also heard that if LL does sell out to Microsoft, Bill Gates will have an avatar that wears chaps and a sequined cod piece.

LL would have absolutely no reason to do this. Without being able to turn L$ to US$ the L$ would be truly worthless and LL needs the money from tier to pay salaries and keep the lights on. LL has real world expenses in running SL and their creditors and vendors will not be too willing to accept L$ for payment.

And Melinda Gates will wear silks.

Now if the L$ couldn't be sold anywhere, full stop, then yes it would be worthless.

The other scenario is L$ vanishing completely rather than just shutting down buying and selling of them.

LL employees & contractors are bound by signed agreement not to participate in insider trading or provide others with insider tips. Insider trading is explicitly banned and is grounds for termination. Manipulation of the market is forbidden.

If you can support these accusations by all means do so. Otherwise it just sounds like speculations designed to manipulate the market. This forum was not zoned for overt market manipulation.

If anyone is really interested I could see if I still have a copy of said agreement around.
