From the all the tech reviews I've been reading, HP's new gaming rig, the Blackbird 002 seems to be a nice lil' performer as well.

Update!

Many thanks and hugs to all who responded to my query. Based on advice I from you guys and family, friends, etc...

I have purchased, received, set up my new PC. It IS a Dell - btw this is my 3rd Dell and I like them fine. Through my work I get a nice discount on them which of course is incentive to buy. :)

I got the system I specified in the OP - only I did add more memory and sprung for the higher end graphics card. All I can say is...

ZOMFG and WOW what a difference!

If I wasn't addicted to SL before, there's no hope for me now. The big test was going into a VERY popular hair/clothing store (ya'll know where I mean *wink*) at peak shopping hours. I used to have to wait a min of 5 or more mins for everything just to rez.

Now I was in - purchased a ton of stuff - and out in about 10 minutes. Un-friggin-believable. *happy sigh*

Thanks again for all the great info and advice. I iz mos happie.

Edit: Oh, forgot to add that the OS is Vista Home edition and seems to work just fine so far. *crosses fingers*

Sol

Two notes:

CompUSA is going out of business... I expect to see some hefty discounts!

For memory - http://crucial.com - easiest site to select memory from,
and of very good quality.

Look very carefully at the graphics card.

From what I read in the Tech and First Look forums, the 8800GT and SL do not get along. Oddly enough, the 8800GTX and 8800GTS cards do just fine.

SL will run on far worse than that, lider. It's more than good enough.
