I run AVG free on three machines and have no bad gripes about it.

It does lack the ability to exclude things, so I can't tell it to leave the SL cache area alone.

It does make what I think are false positive reports from time to time.

It doesn't bug the stew out you all the time. This is very important to me. I don't want to be hearing from antivirus programs.

I tried Microsoft Defender for anti-malware and to my surprise it doesn't bug me at all. In fact it is it hard to tell it's running, it doesn't try to install an icon in the system tray. It was trying to run system scans at 2 a.m. but I'm up at 2 a.m. enough that that got to be a drag so I shut that off and it runs in the background.

When I used Windows firewall, that is the thing about protection software that has bothered me the most. It just can't get the idea that my two machines that are touching each other can trust each other completely, so I'll be trying to perform file copy that worked yesterday and now machine A can't read machine B's folder. It's been told what it needs to know many times but simply can't remember. I'm not trying to solve that problem anymore so don't waste any time giving me any suggestions on that issue.

I just found out recently about something I found interesting, a site called virustotal.com, that you can send a file to and it will scan it with over a dozen different anti-malware programs. It's interesting seeing the conflicting reports, some finding a problem, some not, the ones reporting problems reporting different names and levels of risk.

The fmod.dll file provided with Second Life is reported as suspicious by the Fortinet anti-malware program. Oh Noes!!! It might be a good place to go when you get a report of a program and are trying to decide how distressed to be. I've just found out about, maybe someone else has something to offer about that site.

AVG Free all the way. I think it's the best anti virus program out there. I run it on all our computers which all run 24/7 and never have problems ever.

McAfee has worked fine for me and it doesn't seem to fight with SL.

Same here. The company I work for gave me a license for it. Never problems with SL.

My provider seems to check pretty good on virusses. That together with McAfee is said to be safe enough.

I've used everything mentioned above and have used Microsoft Onecare for past 2 years and love it. So much less hassle.

I moved from Norton to Kaspersky and I am quite pleased at how much less the anti-virus interferes with my SL experience.

I've been using AVG free for a good while now with not much complaint for the most part until recently, when it started having to havwe the computer be restarted to complete an update every single day. I upgrade to AVG 8, and it's a fairly major upgrade. AVG 8 adds things to web pages, does all sorts of scanning of your network and such that AVG 7 didn't appear to do. It's a lot more intrusive, and still is producing false postivies, and reporting programs that might be unwanted as is they were malware. I uninstalled it and am trying Avast.

Just a warning to anyone whose been happily using the unobtrusive AVG for years, it appears it might be time to start looking around.

I have been using AVG Free, by Grisoft, for 4 years or more after dumping Nortons and McAffee. AVG does not have the overhead that comes with Nortons and McAffees and has been really incredible and stopping or cleaning unwanted intrusions.

Agrees excellent AVP.

ClamWin doesn't do realtime scanning does it?

I wonder what the security problem fixed in the latest update was.

No it doesn't.

But an antivirus Will slow you down if you want it to real time scan.
