First of all I <3 NPIRL. Blog and group well worth a browse.

(Spoiler alert. Don't read the rest of this post unless you have seen the clip in the OP or do not plan to see it or don't care about spoilers.) :p

At first I thought, aww, "The Matrix" - I love(d) that movie. First time I saw that movie was the first I'd felt excited seeing a film in a long time...actual surprise. Nice reminder of that.

Then (watching the guy work with hologram devices) I thought "what people can imagine will one day happen. Star Trek medical devices exist now, etc." Might take 40 years but we might see this (hologram style) technology in RL one day. ("Johnny Mnemonic" did it first?)

Then I thought, uh oh that might not be good. Not everyone who would go around changing the physicality of the real world would have a good motive or would be up to the responsibility/judgment necessary. Think: being on the wrong side of an empire.

Then, words like megalomania and isolation popped up. Remember how the guy in Blade Runner ended up who made the little androids. And he wasn't even the bad guy.

Then I saw why he was building the world and I thought of "The Fountain" and I thought about using technology to improve the lives of others and to reprogram emotions away from depression, limitations of the physical body etc. Simliar to the way doctors used dream therapy and a form of hypnosis, to help Christopher Reeve focus on past physical triumphs/joys and leave his body a while...

Then I understood why the OP and NPIRL are saying, "this is how SL could/should be" - and Yes I know my references are mostly filmic.

And I'm still wondering why LL is kicking people off their land...

I love this film. Love the little familiar touches that we know from SL, although the guy who created it apparently hasn't seen SL.

I want his texture organiser. :-D

I saw the video a few days ago, it's amazing. Bit of a problem with stability though as it all disintegrated at the end!

:) I wouldn't mind if I could at least gesticulate at the comp and have it appear on the screen ... we were discussing a cam interface not long ago- don't recall the thread.
