It's called 'Traffic Shaping'. Discussed in great depth on the ADSLguide forums.

Actually, I believe it is a reference to Alberto Tascilli, the famous 17th Genoese explorer who discovered France. People already knew about France though, so his fame was short lived.

I was in a chippy in Liverpool a couple of months back and people were ordering fried rice and chips, with gravy. They even eat chips with pizza. What's that about? _____________________

But have you been to a chippy up by Penny Lane, not far from the Bluecoat School? They don't do lamb cobblers, but I'm sure they'd try if you asked them. They have the biggest Anglo-Chinese menu I've ever seen. They also ask before they smother your chips in vinegar, which I appreciate. _____________________

a) it's "Tiscali". Slightly frightening idea that someone can talk about traffic shaping but not spell the name of their ISP...
b) The "phone system" wasn't designed in the 1930's and the national backbone - called Colossus - isn't part of the phone system. c) Decisions by ISPs to implement traffic chokes and shaping have nothing whatsoever to do with the phone system, or indeed with Colossus d) Tiscali as an ISP don't even necessarily use the national backbone - they may choose to use one of the alternatives, ike Energis' network which consists of fibres strung along overhead power lines. So aside from all that... top post! (historical aside: the national fibre & data backbone is indeed named after "Colossus" - the computer designed and built by Alan Turing to crack german military codes during World War II. Large chunks of the infrastructre that make Colossus work are actually at Bletchley Park, the codebreaker's wartime HQ. Arguably, therefore, Colossus is the oldest continuously-upgraded bit of computing hardware on the planet - but it bears no responsibility for the cost-driven decisions of third-tier ISPS in restricting their users bandwidth by protocol. Some of us simply pay the actual rate for the bandwidth we require - and get it. There's a funny thing!) |

I don't know anything about Tiscali but others in my RL's house have recently changed from BT Broadband, which was good but expensive, to O2 Broadband, which is hopeless but cheap!
Why hopeless? Because it keeps losing connection. |

Yes, I'm with Tiscali and have been having real problems connecting to SL, especially this week - in fact, this evening I can't even get in because it keeps timing out saying that the login packet didn't reach the server.
It's usually OK during the day but deteriorates badly in the evening. For some reason it's also choking my Opera browser which keeps hanging on blank pages although Firefox, IE and SeaMonkey all seem to be fine. Also I can't connect to Kaspersky to download the latest antivirus updates - again the Kaspersky server keeps returning Server Timeout messages. It's also affecting my ability to log in to the First Class conferencing service run by the Open University here in the UK so I'm unable to check my course conference for my studies. Tiscali has been mentioned as blocking/restricting the port that the OU First Class server uses. So Tiscali is useless - any better suggestions from SL residents in the UK? *hopeful sweet black furry smile* Elfrida |
