Everyone use to be able to own land but that was 2003 in Beta.
I do think they make more money if they allowed everyone to pay tier but that would mean non premium would have to put up their credit cards or billing information some don't trust or want SL to have it.
I don't think SL is hurting for money or they do more to generate income unless they do in sneaky ways that we don't know about.

Well, Bilbo and his premium alt pay $144US pa.

Bilbo is semi-old timer so gets 400L$ but alt being newer gets 300 so together, 700L$ stipend .. or welfare .. makes 36400L$ pa at Lindals conversion rate is 137$US.

Now, having formed a group and donating both 512 allowances I have a comfortable little home in a 1024 sunset viewing hillside. The land cost something in the region of 3kL$, the first 512 having been got with the old First Land scheme so for Lindals case of talking people into premium, my land purchase price puts a bit of a spanner in the works.

However!!! disregarding land purchase (which should be largely recuperable in the event of selling) I'm having the time of my SecondLife in a tier-free 1024 for a whacking 7$US pa!

My point in the argument folk have put about buying lindens when you want them is that with a weekly stipend, there is a great motivation to curb spending to meet it whereas the temptation to just hit that 'buy lindens' button could crop up any time. OK, some folk have better self control than me, I admit!

Finally, on the score that some others have pointed out that LL get more income from tier than premium .... er .. <cough> .. they must *really* love me!! :o

Which sim?

Walker, perhaps you could let me know which sim has the 512s to rent? I'm keen to try before I buy if the rental is reasonable, but I haven't found many to choose from so far. Thanks. :)

I think it was an example. There are tons and tons of sims with rental lots. Take some time to find the one that you like. :)

You do not need to be premium. I've got several customers who used to pay VAT to LL and now rent tier from my group.

You invite me to join your group and tell me how much tier you want to rent (For example, you need 466sqm of tier donated to a group to own 512sqm). I donate the tier. You pay me for the amount of tier you've requested on a weekly or monthly basis.

For those who want to rent their tier to me, it's just the reverse. I send you an invitation to my group and you donate your tier, and I pay you.

Now there's a thought that had escaped me up until now.
If a non-Premium can create a group. The group can buy land with tier donated_by/rented_from Premiums, the a non-Prem can (in terms of control) own mainland.
My non-Prem Alt got as far as the standard "You wanna spend L$100 to create a group? Are you crazy??" dialog, so I'd guess a Yes would have her a group.

Someone doing that would have to be prepared to upgrade to Premium in a hurry if the donated/rented tier suddenly shrank for whatever reason.

I've thought about creating a crew of premium-account alts and putting them all in a group to pay the tier on a good sized piece of land for my primary character's use. You could pay tier on an 8192 parcel for "free" with a group of about 14 alts. The annual cost in Premium memberships would be just a little bit less than I'm currently spending, counting rent and all other purchases.

The only problem is, what would I do with all that stipend? It's much more than I need...so I'd probably save it up and buy more land, which would require more tier, and that would require more alts which would generate more stipend....

save it up and use it to pay off those premium accounts.... as mentioned in the first post lol.. then you really do own all of that land for free ^^

Perhaps you could put it towards a new car, instead of buying used.

You are definitely slutty in the best possible definitions of the word. Dirty, hot, and a little scary, but in a good way. I'd like do awful things to you, but I'm pretty sure you'd snap me in two like a twig and leave me cross-eyed, dizzy and confused. I'm giving you a 9.8, tied for the top rating ever given. Almost off-the charts slutty. Shame on you and congratulations. -- Trout

Why aren't you a Premium member, huh?

Cause i'm on a mainland free diet and pay my tier to a private land baron and cant be bothered to figure out how to effectively keep 512 meters of virtual dirt possibly surrounded by spinning whirling things rented.

Once upon a time i was a premium holder and owned land and then one day i got better and now i have land on a private estate and am free of griefing land owner neighbours who get all pissy and have hate battles with transparent walls and other things to block me because they dont like the fact my avatar totes virtual drugs and smokes.

I got tired of fighting with neighbours to be allowed to use my little chunk of land so i gave up and left and am all the more happy for it.
